seeking recommendation for private cook

I can make some recommendations personally, but I also think that Kitchit.com would be a good place to start...get an invite by using my name (susan flynn).

Nice dinner near Milbrae / Burlingame

Not an expense account type of place, but pure comfort and reliable: Fiddler's Green in Millbrae. Easy access to airport, they pour a mean Guinness, have all the usual pub suspects with a few upscale addiitons (lamb chops are great). Owners and their family couldn't be nicer.

case of organic apples, medium size

I need a case of organic apples (crisp, sweet), medium size, in the south bay...for a good price. Where should I go?

TIA

Wedding Caterer Under $80-100/pp

try Carrie Dove catering - she's doing a friend's niece's wedding and they loved their tasting.

rehearsal dinner for 30 in Ogunquit or nearby

Hi, starting early as the wedding is in 2012 - looking for recommendations for good food and casual atmosphere for a rehearsal dinner spot - would even consider having something catered if there was a neat spot outside for a farm to table theme...any suggestions?

Early Peninsula Dinner - Cupertino to the Airport

my all-time favorite before flying (or after, if it's not too late) is Fiddler's Green Irish Pub and Restaurant in Millbrae...on El Camino, never too crowded, perfect pint of Guiness, Irish comfort food like shephard's pie, fish and chips, lamb chops, fantastic Irish Breakfast...never, ever disappoints.

Oaxacan Kitchen Palo Alto - change of ownership or closing

Seemed pretty busy to me every time I went, and the food was good overall - especially the salsas. Chef and wife do culinary trips, so maybe they decided that venture and wholesale/farmers market sales were enough?

Outer Richmond Chowhounding

Husband walked by Polish Deli in PA this Sunday to find it GONE? Waaa, those were some good sausages...

Oaxacan Kitchen Palo Alto - change of ownership or closing

change of ownership sign in window of Oaxacan Kitchen - what gives? Looks like another concept coming in ("mediterranean")

bakery/peninsula

I had a very soggy, i.e. microwaved quiche there and was very disappointed. The sandwiches looked like a better option. And there are only four or so tables so lunch is crowded.

But the chocolates are very tasty.

Dinner with friends on upper west side

Highly second Kefi - there are lots of options for vegetarians, and the vibe is very fun. I always over-order as so many things appeal. Ask for wine recs if not familiar with Greek wines - never been disappointed. Wish there was a place like this in SF!

where can I find a metal rib rack for my BBQ

Anyone seen one recently? preferably on the Peninsula or in the South Bay...thx.

Blue Sky San Carlos - closed?

Happened to notice that there were no lights or signs of life in the Blue Sky restaurant on two separate days at different times of day...I hope they are not closed permanently! Anyone have any insider info? I will miss their friendly service and sometimes great chow.

source for white polenta

thanks for the quick reply...

source for white polenta

Has anyone seen white polenta for sale, especially on the Peninsula or in the South Bay...no time to order and need some tonight.

Thanks.

Peet's alternative - whole beans for drip coffee

Where on the Peninsula can I get the freshest/best price on coffee beans? I have had fairly good luck at Continental in RWC, and WF, but any others I am missing? Dark roast preferred.

Asian cooking vessels and steamers

Where can I purchase a soup pot that looks like an angel food cake pan ("hot pot"?), a divided soup pot and the stacking metal steamers used in Thai and Viet cooking? Peninsula and SF preferred, though will travel elsewhere if I must...TIA

The Cask in San Carlos -- wine bar

That would be Spasso - same owners as Cask - and same level of food. Not bad but not great and $$ for the quality...

low-cost event space with bar for memorial get together

thanks - another great idea...so good to have this community in times like this.

low-cost event space with bar for memorial get together

Thanks! you are a doll - that would be perfect and maybe we can make it a little earlier too...not sure of the numbers yet, but thinking about 60?

low-cost event space with bar for memorial get together

I am looking for a low to no cost space with a bar that would host a group of friends and kids coming from a memorial service at the Presidio Chapel this Saturday from 5-8 PM. Or, a low cost place that would allow a cash bar hosted by friends of the deceased. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Amber India, Santana Row - what was this?

Thanks, that's it! The amazing chowhound community, what would I do without you!?

Amber India, Santana Row - what was this?

I had the lunch buffet today at Amber India in Santana Row, and there was a spongy bread-like item at the front of the line. I only remember that it was made with gram (besan) flour. It seemed steamed, and was unusual (at least to me). It was not unlike idli in texture, but was yellow (tumeric?).

Does anyone know the name of the dish and does anyone have a recipe?

TIA

Rumi?

I am afraid to try it - the menu has lists a kebob with "huckleberry mashed potatoes" - sigh.

New Kapadokia's food was very good the time we tried it, and it is a weekly favorite of my foodie neighbor, whose three children are always kindly received by the owner. It's the real deal.

source for unusual herbs and spices, esp turkish/greek

I am searching for local (SF esp) markets to source some unusual spices and ingredients (meats, sausages, breads, cheeses), especially those of the eastern mediterranean (Turkey/Greece) but also of Spain/Portugal. Any ideas? I used to shop at SF Herb, but looking for more unusual selection.

Thanks!

Upscale in/near Redwood City?

Maybe Marche in Menlo Park? (I have been very disappointed in RWC's Mandaloun BTW...trying hard but missing the mark)

French macarons in Redwood City - Pamplemousse Patisseries et Cafe

I stopped by with a friend this morning around 10:30. We introduced ourselves to the young woman who is the chef/owner and "everything else", she said. She is from Quebec.

We orderedt two lattes (small and medium - both served in large porcelain cups), one almond croissant and one apple calvados muffin (total $12 and change). Kinda pricey but the space is very pleasant, the help friendly, and the pastries were decent. The croissant was more square than traditiona, but flakey and not too sweetl, but the "muffin" was more like a baked pudding, dense and heavy - not my favorite. There were a handful of people both inside and out. The sandwiches looked very decent (breads not made in house - she is using Bakers of Paris). The cakes looked great - both full and mini sizes. She plans to offer chocolates soon, made by a friend. It will be a nice stop after a movie or a meal on Broadway.

Thanks RWCFoodie for scouting it out!

Hidden Steak Sandwich or Similar Food on the (Mid) Peninsula

I think Vics in San Carlos (San Carlos Ave, south side) between Laurel and El Camino) has both steak sand/small steak option (not great but not bad) and Louis salad.

Bay area source for fresh Epazote?

Whole foods in San Mateo had the plants for sale in pots - as this is really a weed, it is easily grown in the home garden. It likes water apparently - I was sitting on a lawn chair in the sandy soil next to the Russian river one summer, and, noticing a smell, looked down to see I was in a field of it! Anyone see a wild site closer in?
