Visiting Austin for 3 1/2 days for my birthday - Dec 3rd -7th

There are lots of good burger places in town. Check out Counter Cafe close to WFM downtown.

For your birthday dinner, I would definitely skip Uchi's. You have much better sushi in NYC than Uchi. Austin doesn't really have a woozy zowy restaurant like you are probably used to in NYC….no Eleven Madison Park, etc. Probably the closest we have is Congress or maybe even Jeffery's. (good burger there too in the bar). I like Jeffery's cause they have a martini cart that they bring to your table.

You will be staying close to Curra's on Oltorf & they have really good tacos. You are also pretty close to the old school Austin breakfast place, Magnolia Cafe (open 24 hours). Check out Jo's on S. Congress for coffee and people watching.

For interesting food, check out Odd Duck or Barley Swine (same chef) Odd Duck is open the lunch & dinner. Barley Swine is just open for dinner, $55/several courses.

I usually don't eat BBQ, but almost everywhere in Austin that serves BBQ will be better than NYC!

Please write a report & let us know about your experience. Have fun.

Classic Cocktails in Dallas

Try the bar at the Mansion if Danny is there. Great cocktails!

LA Hound coming into town; any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would go to Uchiko. My last 2 trips to Uchi were mediocre at best. Food seemed boring, not as fresh as in the past & service was uninspiring like the people working there were bored too! Much different atmosphere than when Paul & Yoshi were there.

Tei An, Marquee Grill & The Chesterfield

I'll be in Dallas later this week & was wondering if the food is still good at Tei An? I'm not seeing much chatter about it lately.
I need to plan a special birthday dinner while in Dallas. What about Marquee Grill?
Also, has anyone been to The Chesterfield? Verdict?

Thanks for the help.

rib roast: how to cook

I was reading a recipe on Food 52 for a rib roast where you coat with flour, salt & pepper & roast in a 500 degree oven for about 15 minutes, then turn it off & leave it for 2 hours. Has anyone ever tried this? Do you have a favorite way to cook a rib roast?

Thanks for any help. I don't usually do roasts.

Visiting NYC, got a cold. Need spicy food!!!

On the first day of our 5 day visit, my partner has contracted a cold. Hot, spicy food usually helps him get over a cold quickly. Any suggestions?

Coming to NYC from Austin. Need suggestion for taking out friends....

Need a suggestion for a casual place to take 3 friends (5 in total) where we can eat, drink wine & catch up on life. Would love something outside, weather permitting (it's still triple digits in Austin). Would like to keep the tab around $50./pp including wine (1 person doesn't drink), not including tip. Area not that important as we are coming from the financial district & they are coming from Roosevelt Island.

Thanks for your help!

One night in Austin

As a woman alone in Austin at times, I like to stay around South Congress either at the San Jose or St. Cecilia. I like walking down to Vespaio and sitting at the bar. It's not the absolute best food in town, but the bartenders are great & food is fairly good. It's easy to have a conversation with other people if you want. For an Austin experience for breakfast, you can walk on down Congress to the Magnolia for breakfast. The pancakes with bananas & pecans are really yummy!!!

Reservations at Island Creek Oyster Bar: can they be all booked up for 7-9pm times????

Thanks for all the suggestions. I called and got a res for 7:30pm, but after the other comments, I really would rather eat at the bar. I always find that more interesting & it's easier to hear the person you are with if it gets noisy. Can't wait to have some yummy oysters!!!

Reservations at Island Creek Oyster Bar: can they be all booked up for 7-9pm times????

My partner and I are visiting Boston from Austin Sept 15-18. We love oysters & I wanted to make a reservation at ICOB for around 7:30 on the 16th or 17th. It looks like there are only early reservations or late ones. In Austin, there are several restaurants that do not take reservations during peak times (go figure). I was wondering if ICOB also follows this policy. What are our chances of getting a table without a reservation at prime time?

Thanks for any insight!

Haven't been to Boston in 20 years. Need help!!!

My partner & I are coming to Boston for a 2 day CME program. We are staying at the Ritz & the workshop is at the Hilton Back Bay. I don't have a clue where to eat. We love most food. Would like to take him to an old Italian kind of place followed by desert somewhere. Would also love just something really good. Will travel. Price not important.

His brother recommended Troquet & Pigalle. What do you think? Also, what about Rino's for the Italian. Was also considering Island Creek Oyster Bar as we love oysters.

Would appreciate any suggestions. Also, can you recommend a fun Irish bar? We also love to drink!!!

Thanks everyone!

austin itinerary - any edits/suggestions?

We took a pregnant friend to Uchiko a couple of months ago & asked the waiter to request the chef feed us with the requirement of nothing raw. We had several dishes & all were incredible! Some were not on the menu. So, I would not shy away from Uchiko!

Eating out in Santa Fe with dog

Hi! I will be visiting Santa Fe next week & have rented a house so that I can bring my dog. The house is about a 10 minute walk to the Plaza and is close to the Railway area. I would like some suggestions as to places I can take him for breakfast or dinner.

Open to all food and can drive if need be. Thanks for any help! Woof! Woof!!

Shibumi Ramenya & also a place for dinner Sunday night in a couple of weeks

Hello everyone. I'll be in Santa Fe July 24-30. Many of the restaurants I've checked are not open on Sunday night. I am looking for a recommendation. We will have been driving most of the day, so we would like something easy. We are both open to almost all food & would like to spend no more than $150.00 including drinks.

Also, I was wondering if anyone had information about Shibumi Ramenya? Is the Kaiseki/Izakaya dinner something we should check out as we will be there the last Thursday in July.

Thanks for your help & I promise to send a write up of my meals.

Need vacuum sealer for Sous Vide Supreme

Thanks for the reply. I don't have a lot of money, so I'm not in the market for the vacuum seals that are above $300.00. I found another place on this forum that linked me to The VacMaster Pro 130 which is on sale right now for about $189.00 with free shipping (always love the free shipping). Has anyone used one of these?

Thanks for info.

Need vacuum sealer for Sous Vide Supreme

I bought a Sous Vide Supreme machine. Now I need to buy a vacuum sealer and the reviews for the one that goes with the Supreme get really awful reviews. I read a few reviews about Foodsaver, but couldn't find info on the safety of the bags.

Can anyone recommend what I should buy?

Thanks!

Couple from Taiwan...where can I take them for a really good meal?

We actually ended up going to Uchiko & just let the waiter serve us. Food was great, service great. They had eaten at Din Ho the night before & loved the pork blood cake.
Thanks for the suggestions & discussion.

Thanks for all the suggestions. They are from Taiwan, but aren't able to go home except every other year. I was thinking they might be homesick for comfort food.

Couple from Taiwan...where can I take them for a really good meal?

I have a friend that works with a couple from Taiwan that will be visiting Austin this w/e. They have recently come to the USA & are working in Roswell, NM. Not a mecca for food!!! I would like to take them to a restaurant that they would really enjoy. Where would you take them???

We don't care what part of town and cost is not an issue. I thought about Uchiko, but I didn't know if they might enjoy a Chinese restaurant. Please help!!! Wish I had paid more attention to Mick Vann's reviews.

Help me fix my basil pesto for dinner tonight (or maybe tomorrow)!!!

I used sea salt that was about the same size. You are completely right about starting with less!!
