Side Salad. Big, and fast

Good morning. I'm supposed to be bringing a side dish to a barbeque for 100 tonight. I need something, big, fast, and easy.

My two thoughts were - head to St Lawrence Market and buy something you can put on a tray and eat with your fingers. Or - I heard that Costco had good side salads. (No potato salad though - already taken). Also, it's got to be ready to go - can't do anything frozen. Ideas? Please?

Chicken Pot Pie that I can pass off as my own

I'm looking for a frozen pot pies that I can pass off as my own.( No, not really). But they have to be good. I'd prefer something from a Toronto bakery, without preservatives. The one I tasted at Costco was delicious, but I understand it's wildly caloric and full of salt. Any ideas. I'm hosting Sunday dinner and I don't feel like cooking. Ho ho ho.

Narrowing down Italian Choices

Last minute get together for 8 this weekend - and we're going Italian. Of course, a lot depends on where we can get a reservation, but we want excellent pasta, and the opportunity for good conversation (Not too loud, we're in our 40's). Here's what I'm thinking. Tutti Matti, Noce, Sidecar. Fusilli. I haven't been to all these spots, so I need some guidance. Atmosphere is really important - I'm looking for the anti-Terroni. (no offense intended, I just would like something more subdued)

Dublin Bakery

Looks lovely. But for this particular birthday girl, I'm looking for a cake that's a bit more of a visually exravagant

A weekend in Coconut Grove

Beautiful! Peacock Garden looks so lovely......

You will definitely find us there this weekend. And at Whisk. And by the pool with a Mojito. Thank you so much.

A weekend in Coconut Grove

Thank you for the advise - much appreciated. Jaguar's menu looks really fun, and I think Whisk is definitely worth a visit. Perfect. Also, I'm a big fan of a good lazy dive bar, though the tacos are more appealing than the sports.

I'm also very interest in visiting Little Havana - I'm a big fan of Cuban food, (and Cuban's!) , as well as any type of open air market. Recommendations?

Thank you

A weekend in Coconut Grove

Hello,

My friend and I are spending the weekend in Coconut Grove, and would love some advice on local restaurants. We're staying at the Sonesta, so Friday night's dinner will consist largely of Mojito's. I've done a bit of web research and have found El Carajo Tapas & Wine Bar, which looks fantastic. Calamari & El Fresco also look good, as do Garcia's, Michy's, and Red Light if we're in the mood to take a cab.

Ideally what we'd like is really good food in a warm, unpretentious setting. And I like to graze, so tapas and appetizers are ralways appealing. That way, we can keep eating all day.

Thanks

Steak Frites Emergency

These all sound good - I'm leaning towards Weezie's or Le Select. In the interest of being able to walk, rather than drive, someone suggested Le Papillon on the Park. So I'll leave it up to the birthday boy. Thanks

Steak Frites Emergency

Oh no! Our beloved Le Paradis is closed for the holiday, and we desperately need a place where we can sit at the bar and order Steak Frites and a bottle of wine.

Any ideas? I haven't been to Le Select in a while, but the latest reviews have been quite mixed.

Calgary Christmas Gift

Can anybody help me with a recommendation? I"m buying a Christmas gift for a couple living in Calgary (Late 40's, relaxed, fun). I'd like to give them a night out somewhere where there's good food. Could be a fabulous dinner, or dinner and a dance lesson, or an overnight at an inn within an hour of the city, with a meal included. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm from Ontario (mid 40,s, not relaxed, sort of fun) and don't know where to start.

Le Creuset at Home Sense & Winners

I actually found a lovely blue Le Crueset pot at the Homesense in Cambridge. I little scratch on the lid, but I can live with that.

Benihana at Royal York, worth it? (featured on Wagjag today)

Wildly overpriced for very plain food. The only moment of joy was the 'onion volcano' but still not worth the very hefty tab.

St Louis wings may be average, but their wing sauce is fabulous. We stalk up on sauce and barbeque our own wings at home.

They have a lovely little patio overlooking the river, and the food is fantastic.

Also, if you want country charm with a nice atmosphere, try dining on the island

Ancient but good - what's your long standing favourite?

The patio at Grano always makes me happy. Also, I've been following Gio Rana and his Big Nose around town for the last fifteen years. He makes me happy too.

Willow - Don't go!

I was there last winter. We had three different entrees, and the only good thing was the gummie worm served with my nephews cola.

Looking for Ceili Cottage updates

Another word of caution. Bread doesn't come with the mussels - it's a separate order. So make that, tiny, tasty, and troublesome. Given that the mussels or already overpriced, it's a bit stingy.

Ceili Cottage is a beautifully designed space, and it smells good in the winter, but for comfort, ease, and hospitality, I'm happy to take spend my money on the Stranger's patio instead.

Shopping trip to Etobicoke suggestions

A trip to Etobicoke without visiting the Cheese Boutique is like a trip to Centre Island without visiting Centreville. You must go! It's worth a stop, if only to be charmed by the abundance, the atmosphere, and the lovely little samples.

And for a delicious latte, and wonderful baked goods ( great atmosphere as well), carry on to Royal York Road to visit San Remo.

Papillon on the park. Good patio?

Has anyone dined recently on the patio at Le Papillon on the Park? I went into the restaurant and it seemed sort of cavernous. However - that's just my first impression - we were only checking it out.

But I heard the patio is lovely. Is it? We're thinking of going there for an important dinner (there are three of us) and I really want to go somewhere pretty. Thanks.

there must be one good restaurant in Niagara Falls!?

There is one good restaurant in Niagara Falls!

I've eaten at the Falls bazillions of times (A favorite getaway for the in-laws, purgatory for me) and the only place that made me happy was Napoli - home of the best caesar salad in all the land.

The decor is intimate but unpretentious, the service is warm and professional, and the food is wonderful. I was part of a large family group of mixed ages, and Napoli satisfied everyone. The picky eaters loved their pasta, those with more discerning palates were thrilled with the quality, and grandma loved her veal (and the wine).

Truly a lovely meal.

Help- Parents 50th anniversary Party- Aug 20th- looking for a waterfront location. All suggestions welcome!!

I agree completely with childofthestorm - Casa Mendoza's patio is excellent. We've had some hugely memorable nights there, but unfortunately the food did not factor into any of our happy memories. It was awful. The atmosphere is lovely and the staff are lovely, but the food is not good. To call it 'decent ' is kind. To call it mediocre is generous. It is really bad.

I've been there several times and my most recent visit was last summer where we had nice white wine & cold, rubbery calamari on a summer afternoon.

It may have improved - I hope so. I really do. But please make sure you try out the food before you commit to a party.

Have you thought about going over to the island? There's always something magical about a ferry ride, and this restaurant and it's lakeside patio are lovely.

Brickworks 2010 - opening week-end

Sadly, the Farmers Market felt like a shopping mall. The parking lot has been paved, and the first person to approach me was a sales rep for 'Auto Share. I agree that it felt as though there were less vendors. The bustling market-like excitement was diminished - the bigger bustle was trying to park my car . Last year I lingered for hours - this year I had a lemonade - then took my dog for walk.

wing nights in Leslieville

Ahhhh wings. Two of Leslieville's Irish pubs have Wing Nights. Monday is Wing night at Murphy's Law (http://www.murphyslaw.ca/), and The Roy (http://www.theroy.ca/) has Wing Night on Monday & Wednesday. Who's the best? They're both good so it boils down to atmosphere. The Roy is cozy, and serves very, very good pub food. Murphy's law is much larger, with ok food - but they have two very, very good patios.

For me - it's winter at the Roy, and summer on the roof of Murphy's.
