Trip Report August 26-30 !

Stanley is amazing for breakfast but I've never had a light meal there. I love the fried oysters eggs benedict and the brandy milk punch!

Birthday lunch and dinner in NOLA - Suggestions

I've been to NOLA a few times although my dining choices have tended to be on the more casual side - Yo Mama's, Port O' Call, Stanley!, Irene's, Court of Two Sisters Jazz brunch. I love good food and I love trying new things, especially things you can't get anywhere else.

Right now I'm leaning toward Peche for my bday dinner. Thank you for your suggestions. I'm going to chek out the menus!

Birthday lunch and dinner in NOLA - Suggestions

Hello!

I'm heading to Nola at the end of September for a cousin's wedding. We will have one Friday in the Quarter, which happens to be my birthday and I will have time for one dinner and one lunch. And possibly a quick breakfast on the way to the airport Sunday.

I would like the meals to be special. Budget isn't an issue. It's two of us and I love to try any and everything and my SO will just have to go along with that because it's my BIRTHDAY!!!

I appreciate your suggestions!

Bachelorette Party June 2nd in Ft. Lauderdale

Hello! I need help finding a restaurant in Ft. Lauderdale to accommodate a group of around 12 next Saturday night. The bride is not a foodie but wants a nice restaurant that will accommodate us that has great food.

They are staying on Ft. Lauderdale Beach and the plan is to go to the Hard Rock for festivities after eating. We tried to make a reservation at YOLO but couldn't get in. We are looking at the $20-$35 per person for an entree range with a full liquor bar.

Please offer any ideas you may have.

Thanks!

Dine Out Ft. Lauderdale

I thought the Cafe Maxx menu looked great but my party of 5 was severely disappointed. We had to ask for the Dine Out menu. They did not have the wine that I had selected when reviewing the list over the internet so I didn't order any. My shrimp and grits were cold and the corn salsa served with it was bland and not a good complement to the shrimp. The penne carbonara was dry, bland and the sauce was separated. My filet was excellent, cooked to perfection and the blue cheese butter on top was delicious. However, the au gratin and vegetables that came with it were covered in char, completely burnt. My dad's shrimp scampi was inedible. The desserts were your run of the mill, could buy them in Costco fare. I would definitely not go back especially with the prices they charge.

Wilton Manors - Dinner Options

I stopped going to Galanga a few years ago because the quality went down and the prices went way up. Look up the Ft. Lauderdale location of Lemongrass Asian Bistro www.lemongrassasianbistro.com They have a great menu, food is always fresh and it's reasonably priced. I also can always count on Siam for Thai food at the south end of Wilton Drive sandwiched between the police station and Tropics Piano Bar.

Wilton Manors - Dinner Options

I finally had the pleasure of having a burger at Bill's and I can verify that they are awesome! I believe it was only $6 for a huge burger and delicious, fresh hand-cut fries.

good crawfish in south fl??

I second Rosey Baby! They definitely make their crawfish steaming and spicy. It's a dive restaurant but the food is pretty authentic although don't even bother with the muffaletta. Their fried catfish is also delicious. The owner even ordered us a 35 lb. sack of live crawfish for us to boil ourselves and the price was cheaper than Louisiana Crawfish Company which will also ship live crawfish to you.

You should also try out Shuck N Dive in East Ft. Lauderdale. They have Purple Haze on draft which draws me in every time. Make sure to call ahead to see if they have crawfish in stock. Their shrimp n' grits is yummy and their fried green tomatoes are to die for!

Boca Raton restaurants

I agree that Max's Grille is just ok but the plus side is it's in the middle of Mizner Park which has a bunch of great shops, a yogurt place, starbucks and some bars. You could even go down there and take a look at some of the other restaurants and see what appeals to you most. Racks is also located in Mizner Park. The cheese course is very casual but has amazing cheeses and a bunch of tasty meats, sandwiches and salads. You can sit outside and enjoy your food and wine and then go to Zed or the Dubliner for more of a bar scene.

Quick early dinner Saturday night near UC Berkeley

I need a quick dinner for 4 on Saturday June 4th near UC Berkeley. We are heading to the Greek Theater to see Adele at 8 pm but want to get there by 6:30pm when the doors open so dinner will have to be around 5 pm. Keep in mind we are traveling from Union Square and we will have a car. Would the Cafe at Chez Panisse be a good choice? What about Sea Salt? It would be best if it's in the $40 range per person or below. Any type of food is fine as long as it's good and we can get in and out of there quickly. Thanks!

Can you get good food at the Racinos?

I second The Cheese Course. I've been to the ones in Mizner Park in Boca and at Gulfstream. The Proscuitto De Parma is also my favorite sandwich and I can get enough of the Truffled Cacio Romano Cheese.

I've been to the Yardhouse twice and honestly only go there for the great draft beer selection. The food is just ok, the same kind of things you can get at many chains.

A week in San Fran and Wine Country in early June - Help needed finalizing itinerary

I completely agree about staying closer. We're going to be so tired by the end of the day I highly doubt we will want to drive an hour each way for dinner. This thread has been truly educational.

Awesome. I prefer casual anyway as my SO and I aren't really "fancy" people. Our traveling companions are a little more fussy though but I'm thinking that after a long day of driving and wine tastings they might be tired enough to not care too much about their hair and makeup.

We're doing tours and tastings in Napa Monday and Tuesday. Sunday is Sonoma. Originally I was thinking it would be best to have dinners near where we are staying in Sonoma so we could freshen up before dinner but Carrie is making me think it would be better to just get dinner right after the tastings in Napa and not worry about being too pretty at the restaurant.

You've got a really good point about not going all the way back to Sonoma until after dinner. If we've been trekking around different wineries all day and probably not dressed in clothes that are that nice compared to what we would wear if we went back and showered and changed would we look like slobs compared to everyone else in the restaurants you mentioned? I'm really glad we have 2 more months to plan this and make reservations. This is definitely one of the more challenging trips I've planned.

We are staying at Arrowood Winery in Sonoma. The drive to Barndiva per Google Maps is around 50 mins and to Bottega is 30 so I'm definitely thinking we should stay in Sonoma Sunday and maybe doing an earlier dinner in Napa Monday after the last tasting.

Yes, we are staying in Sonoma Sunday - Wednesday. We had originally planned to go to Girl & the Fig on Sunday but got a recommendation from a relative that Barndiva was better. We made the new reservation without looking at the geography. I'm going to talk to my friend about changing that back to Girl & the Fig because Barndiva is almost an hour away from where we are staying.

On Monday we will be in Napa all day but I definitely want to find a good restaurant in Sonoma because I know I won't feel like driving half an hour back to Napa for dinner. Of the restaurants suggested by Carrie above, El Dorado Kitchen sounds best to me.

Tuesday at Bottega isn't negotiable as the birthday girl really, really wants to go there.

Thanks for all your comments. I've been able to narrow it down a lot. I would like a few more suggestions for a 9ish dinner for Thursday night, either near Union Square or near the Alcatraz Pier on Bay Street.

Also, does anyone have a suggestions for dinners and lunch in Sonoma? I'm thinking after a long day in Napa we will want to grab dinner in Sonoma since we're staying there, rather than making the trek back to Napa.

Yes! I saw a post about Fremont Diner last night and their pulled pork sandwich and put that on my life of places to check out. It looks wonderful.

I will definitely map it out but the thing I'm finding difficult is that it's somewhat hard to tell distance especially in San Francisco. For example, something might be a few miles away, but it might be quick to take the BART or even a taxi. I'm not opposed to walking either within reason, say 15-20 minutes. I'm going to try to make stops in Wine Country a bit more linear though.

I'm coming from Ft. Lauderdale so most of the places in San Francisco are going to be new to me simply because of the "farm to table" element. We do have some gems here but for the most part it's chains and places that seem to miss the mark. I'm also more apt to cook at home or hit up my favorite local places rather than branching out.

Good point about Gitane. I will research the places you mentioned. There's a great likelihood I'll hit them all up eventually.

Have you been to Bourbon & Branch? I saw a post on this last night and it looks like a cool place. I can't get reservations until a month prior to my visit. I'm curious about the dress code, if any and if you just order drinks or is there food also?

This is a great suggestion. I definitely don't need a sit-down place, pick up and go is fine with me too especially since it should be cool there. We are dying of heat stroke already in Florida. How long of a walk is it to Chinatown from Union Square?

Thanks for the breakfast recs. I will definitely try one if not all three!

I've been trying to convince our friends to go to Hog Island and Cowgirl at the Ferry Building and now I can show them this post as proof that it's a better idea then going to the other locations.

I just checked out Boon Fly's menu and the "Morning Libations" section caught my eye in an awesome way. This looks like a great place for breakfast. Have you been there for lunch or dinner?

A week in San Fran and Wine Country in early June - Help needed finalizing itinerary

Hello all! I've been reading the San Fran Bay Area posts for a couple weeks now so I've gotten a lot of great ideas but it's hard to tie down certain meals since I don't know the area so I'm looking for a little help here. Our friend is a wine rep so she's scheduling all of the winery tours. Winery reservations so far are at Arrowood, Cakebread, Long Meadow Ranch, T Vine, Staglin & Frank Family.

Thursday: Arrive early afternoon. Staying in Union Square and would like a place close to the hotel for a bite and some drinks before the Alcatraz night tour.

Also need a place for a later dinner after the tour which ends around 9. My SO wants to go to In-N-Out Burger but I'm hoping to convince her to go somewhere a little better.

Friday: Up early to head to Muir Woods. Is there anything good and quick for breakfast either in Union Square or on the way to Muir Woods?

I also need help with a place for lunch after the woods. We would need it to be pretty casual since we'll be in hiking gear.

For dinner Friday we are heading to the Off the Grid event at the Fort Mason Center. I'm very excited about this but don't have a lot of experience with food trucks so not sure what to expect.

Saturday: Heading to the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market for a few hours. Will most likely pick up breakfast and lunch there. 2 of our friends are coming in to meet us and we're heading to Perbacco for dinner.

Sunday: Driving down to Sonoma. We need a suggestion for a breakfast in San Francisco around 8 am and lunch in Sonoma. We have reservations at Barndiva for dinner.

Monday: SO and I are heading to Napa. I'm thinking of hitting up Bouchon Bakery for breakfast and Bouchon for lunch but open to suggestions. Not sure where to go for dinner this day.

Tuesday: The foursome is taking the tour of Long Meadow Ranch and having lunch on site. Dinner is at Bottega for my friend's 30th bday.

Wednesday: We head home this day on the red eye so we have the entire day to play. We are toying with going to Cow Girl Creamery and Hog Island Oysters on the way back into San Fran.

For lunches and breakfast I really don't want to spend more than $20 a person and less would be better. But I'm willing to spend more if it's something that's so good I just can't miss it. I will spend more for dinners, although TFL is out of my budget. Tasting menus are great but I really don't want to get dressed up except for Bottega and maybe Barndiva so nothing too fancy please.

Places I've researched after reading about them on the board that sound great to me:
Tartine Bakery - but is it hard to get in?
Gitane - definitely want to do drinks here but not sure where it is in relation to Union Square
Blackbird Bar - cocktails again
Perbacco/Barbacco - Was thinking of Barbacco for lunch but not sure if it's too similar to Perbacco.
Bar Crudo
Dottie's True Blue
Oenotri - possible for Monday dinner but not sure if that's too much Italian for one trip

Thanks in advance for your help!
