Golden Corral coming soon in Freehold

Funniest thing I've read on CH in a long time. I'm wiping my eyes from crying, laughing so hard.

Long Gone But Not Forgotten! Manhattan Memories

That made me think of the Red Tulip on East 75th. It was a mediocre Hungarian restaurant but it was MY mediocre Hungarian restaurant.

Bourdain in Thailand

If I was bothered by it, I'd never watch 90% of his shows. The chances of me actually getting to these places and trying the food is remote. But I enjoy learning about them.

Bourdain in Thailand

I loved it! favorite scene was when they were listening to the guy doing the really weird karioke and AB said, "Now that's gonna be stuck in my head all day".

Don't know if I could have managed the raw blood soup, but pretty much everything else looked terrific.

Places in Charlotte where you order at the counter

Brooklyn South Pizza comes to mind. I kind of hate it.

OJ & Guinness?

I first had Guiness in Ireland. It's very common for women to drink it with a shot of Cointreau in it, so similar taste combination.

Sbarro get's ready for bankruptcy reorganization.............

I have a soft spot in my heart for Sbarro because I used to eat there all the time when I was young, broke and working at the World Trade Center.

Charlotte's Cowfish coming to Raleigh

The last time we were there, he was "lurking". It was still kind of early so he didn't come in. Just kept walking by looking to see who was at the bar.

It's certainly not for serious sushi but it has its place. I've never had a bad dish, service is great and there's something for everyone.

Soup in the Charlotte Area

La Unica on South Blvd. does not have this soup on their menu. I would love to try it.

I know I sound like a broken record, but the pho with brisket and rare steak at Pho Hoa is my favorite soup in Charlotte. The Tom Yum with chicken at Malaya Kitchen is pretty tasty too. Of course it's a salt bomb but there are a ton of fresh vegetables in it too.

The Mis-use of "Miss"

Here in Charlotte, all women are called Miss. Miss First Name if you know them really well and Miss Last Name if they're a teacher or the mother of a friend. My daughter started doing it years ago and I got used to it but as a former NYer, I find it strange. In a good way.

Odd/Nontraditional Sushi Rolls?

Smarty pants - I put a link to it upthread a few days ago but I don't think many people read it. I cracked up when I saw the Nature Boy roll. It definitely wasn't on the menu a while back. Guess he's found a new haunt now that Zink is gone. Ric's roll sounds great.

Do you seriously intend on eating at every one of those places? I must be missing something.

It pains me to say it, but you can take Ferrara off your list.

Charlotte Chowhounds

Wow. I agree with you L-L. I've never had anything but great service at 131 Main. I've never felt the need to go to Greenville or Kannapolis for good food. There are plenty of good restaurants right here in Charlotte.

So Kathleen is responsible for unleashing you on to us?

All kidding aside, I've probably been to 10 restaurants in Charlotte that I never would have considered were it not for CH. Were they all detour worthy? Nope. But I thoroughly enjoyed most of them.

You're right QCM. When I first joined CH in 2007 (ish), there were a lot of Charlotte posters. Not sure where they've all gone. If I'm looking for opinions on a restaurant, I'll occasionally resort to Yelp, but I generally find the reviews there not to be as high quality as some of the Charlotte folks on CH used to provide.

We do get an occasional posting from Kathleen Purvis who writes for the Observer, but not often.

I was one of the Charlotte hounds who visited BLB last week and I'm still thinking about the food. Can't wait to go back.

Central Avenue has a lot of gems on it, as does Montford Drive.

There are still some good threads that should give you a good introduction to the Queen City. Search for "lynn-lato";s posts. She knows her stuff. Until recently, there was a poster named Godfather of Lunch. He had some good posts as well.

Bistro la Bon, Charlotte

Agreed. It was an amazing meal. Not what you'd expect in a strip mall setting. Really excellent food and service. I loved the wood tables and the rugs. Next time, we have to try the octopus! Enjoyed it ladies!

And on the north side of town, in the slightly scary Asian Corner mall on Tryon is Truc and Le's sandwiches.

Best Vietnamese in Charlotte?

Vietnamese is my favorite cuisine. I have not found bad Vietnamese food in Charlotte. Lang Van and Ben Thanh are both excellent. Doan's, Vietnam Grille and Saigon Palace don't disappoint us. Even Viet Thai Noodle House has some pretty solid dishes and great service. That said, Pho Hoa (I know, I know, it's an international chain) on Central (not to be confused with Pho an Hoa) is by far our favorite for pho. Cheap? Check, Hole in the wall? Check.
