Where to get the best Shrimp and Grits in Charlotte

It's been a few years, but I became a shrimp and grits devotee after trying it at Mimosa Grill. Now I make my own!

"real" chinese food??

I'm also in Charlotte and was going to suggest Dim Sum or Tomi, in the Colony Place shopping center on Colony Road. The pho (Pho Hoa) next door to Dim Sum is the best I've ever had. Anywhere.

NC now allows rare burgers!

A relatively large number of restaurants in Charlotte have been ignoring this rule for some time.

Why is the Olive Garden so reviled?

LOL Boston Otter!

A less-crowded place for Mother's Day in Charlotte

Is it now? I have not been!

I struck out at Kennedy's too. More of a frat boy place. Kind of dirty inside too. My mother would NOT be happy there.

Which Two Cuisines for the Rest of your Life?

Definitely Italian and Vietnamese.

What foods do you refuse to eat?

Love, love, love blue and Swiss cheese and I'm a big fan of runny eggs but I hate it when I'm looking at the deescription of a salad on a menu and see things like cranberries or orange wedges. Just...don't.

What foods do you refuse to eat?

All of these things plus eel, basil and raw oysters. I wish I could eat raw oysters. I don't 'refuse" to eat them. They just gross me out!

Places for rehearsal dinner in Charlotte

Yes, I'll agree the uptown one was kind of gorss, but i used to work in the building so we'd go downstairs for drinks after work sometimes. I did eat at M5 once and thought it was really good.

Hey icky, Blackthorne just opened their rooftop patio. I drove by it the other day. It looks gorgeous. I wonder if they'd let you use it?

What did you have for breakfast today?

Tea and Grape Nuts.

Is Zink where we tried to stalk Ric Flair? Next to Cowfish? I get very confused over there. That place had a great outdoor space. It would be a great spot for a private party. I've only eaten at it when it was uptown in the IJL building.

Geez. My memory is really bad. It was only a few months ago when this topic came up. And of course I recommended Ri-Ra which I deliberately avoided doing today. Until now.

Yeah, we've already been warned to plan to work from home that week. I guess I'll also be eating at home as well. Hey Icky, how about Bonterra? There's also this great Korean place out on 74 (I kid).

How about Pewter Rose? They have that separate room for functions (not sure if it can fit 70 though) and the balcony. My last two meals there were misses but I did attend a rehearsal dinner there a few years back and it was gorgeous! Interesting that you think Bistro La Bon won't last through the year. Do tell.

Mazel Icky! What time of year are you thinking? Indoor/Outdoor? Let me know what you already have in mind and I'll see if I can add on.

Favorite Frozen Food?

Although they're kind of pricey, I usually have two or three "boxes" of Tabachnik's in the freezer. I don't know that I've ever gotten anything frozen from Trader Joe's that I didn't enjoy but I haven't tried that much. I also really like Celetano's eggplant parm and their cheese tortellini.

2012 Confessions

I fill Bugles with easy cheese.

Potato Chip Afficionado

Slightly off thread but I was recently introduced to Takis Mexican chips. They're more like a Dorito and they're mad hot! Only available at my local Asian grocery store but worth the trip!

Tuna noodle salad.

My mom made it all the time in the summer months and we still ask her to make it when we have cook-outs. (I actually think this thread topic gets started every year when the weather starts to get warm). We all make it using very al dente radiatore, tuna, chopped celery and Hellmann's. Lots of salt and black pepper. I make it a lot to bring to work for lunch. I'll add whatever leftovers vegetables are in the firdge. Asparagus is great in this. My only regret is that when I make it for myself, I use whole wheat pasta and I can't find whole wheat radiatore, so I use penne.

Charlotte - Good Eats Near Courtyard City Center (South Tryon St)?

Any posts you see regarding "Uptown" Charlotte will be the ones you're looking for. You'll be staying in Uptown. There is no downtown Charlotte.

America's 25 most hated foods

I hate black licorice or anything that tastes like it (Ouzo, fennel, etc.).

That Crockpot Meatball Recipe that Has Grape Jelly In It

Magic Meatballs? I call them that because they disappear. I don't try to understand why but these things are always a hit and I'm asked to make them at least once a year. This past New Years Eve, I made a batch using homemade meatballs and was actually asked if, "Moving forward" (my daughter actually used those words) I could go back to the frozen kind. It was a texture thing, I guess.

CHARLOTTE: Baby Shower Venue Rec's

Most of the newer neighborhoods and apartment complexes in the city have clubhouses that can be rented out. I went to a shower in a neighborhood in S. Charlotte recently. The neighborhood is called Carrington. It would be perfect for 20-30. I think it was $75 for 5 hours. Most have full kitchens. Then you can bring in what you want. If you let us know what part of the city you'll be in, maybe we can dig around or maybe the mother to be has one in her hood.

Question - can you ask the mother to be if you can have this party at her house? It really sounds like you're dreading this. I would hate to have whoever was hosting my baby shower seem to be unhappy about the honor.

Charlotte: Yama Asian Fusion. Sushi lovers, have ya been?

Have not been to Yama yet. We tried to go a few months ago but they were closed due to some pipes leaking. I just saw there's yet another sushi place opening in South Park on Morrison Blvd. Sushi Guru. That's three sushi places (unless there are more that I don't know of) right in South Park, probably within a mile of each other. That seems excessive. Doesn't Upstream have sushi too? It will be interesting to see how long they all last in those locations.

Foulest flavours...

The Carbonara War thread going on right now reminded me that if I detect even the slightest bit of nutmeg or cinnamon in savory Italian dishes, I'm out!

CHARLOTTE: Baby Shower Venue Rec's

How many guests will be attending and how much do you want to spend?

CHARLOTTE: Soup Dumplings???

So "Shanghai Small Dumpling" is what we're looking for? Interesting. Is it pork? Looks like an interesting menu. Thanks Satan! (I don't get to say that every day).

CHARLOTTE: Soup Dumplings???

We're referring specifically to the domplings that have broth added inside of them in gelatin form. As the buns steam, the gelatin returns to soup. LL found some frozen at Super G but we're curious as to whether any restaurants in Charlotte serve them fresh.

CHARLOTTE: Soup Dumplings???

We might have to put this place on our list. The ones you showed me are pork, and I'd really like to try chicken.
