Hawaiian Plate Lunch
From this Advertiser article, Eddie Flores bought his first location and kept the name L&L from the previous owner.

Does anyone have a recipe for the garlic marinade from Versailles Cuban restaurant (Los Angeles area)?
You can get the La Lechonera Sour Orange Juice from the San Antonio Winery in Los Angeles.

Good custard pie in SFV/West LA area?
Such a simple food, yet so hard to find. At least in the Sherman Oaks/SFV area. Anyone know of a good place to get? Occasionally, Vons has it but not every store carries them.
Anyone know of a good custard pie?

Flemings - Dine LA Scam!
Unless I misunderstood, I'm still confused. OP gets $50 Gift card for free (no out of pocket) and complains because they have specials for under $50 (out of pocket)?

Best Gas Station Hot Dog in Los Angeles?
I've always liked AMPM hotdogs and burgers. Depending on which location, you can find some really fresh ingredients (onions, lettuce, fresh (not canned) salsa, etc.) I've been eating there since the 80's when the burgers were 2 for .99. I used to joke with my brother that they couldn't possibly sell it so cheap unless it was kangaroo meat so we called em kangaroo burgers.
another one?? RAMEN JINYA is here! studio city gets ramen, finally. and it's good. (nano-review)
OMG! Finally made it here tonight and it was absolutely amazing! had Tonkotsu w/Rich broth and hard noodles... Heavenly. The broth tasted like pork gravy, it was incredible. The pork melted like cotton candy in your mouth. So going back again.
Looking for fresh Flour Tortillas in West LA (?)
I find most of TJ's bread offerings freshly challenged. Unless you purposely want to chip teeth, I'd stay away.

After reading this post, went down there today (saturday) around 4 only to be turned away as they are closed between lunch and dinner. I didn't catch what time they close but they open again to serve dinner at 5pm. Oh well, will try again later.
Seeking Carne Asada marinade used by Vallarta Mart Mexican grocery store
Thank you SO MUCH for recommending Tresierras Asada. Based on your post/this thread, i picked up a couple pounds of it and broiled it and oh man... it was amazing. Seriously, I don't think i can go back to Vallarta's asada. I gotta say though, I don't regularly go to Pacoima (closest to me) but it was a tad scary, both the neighborhood and the store itself but i think I will be back. its that good.

Japanese markets in the SF valley
Unfortunately, there is nothing. Closest would be Mitsuwa on Centinela in Venice.
Mom's BBQ in Van Nuys
I remember going about a year ago and loving the fried chicken. Went back today for ribs (beef and pork) and kinda dissapointing. The place smells all smoky when u walk in but the ribs did not have any smoke flavor at all. It came drowning in sauce and it seems they were boiled in the sauce as well. I probably wont go back for que, fried chicken yes tho.
Is there a market in the LA area that sells poke like they do in Hawaii?
Marukai and Mitsuwa sometimes have ahi poke in their refrigerated deli section but nothing like the selection you would find in Hawaii. Why don't you just make your own? It really isnt that hard... I made 10 lbs for my wedding. you can get ogo and kim chee base from marukai and fresh ahi from costco or any good fish store. That way you an make it to your liking as well. Good luck.
Tommy's Frozen Chili in Ralph's or Food for Less?
Isn't Dolores chili brick the one that's made with beef hearts? I'd rather have chili sans organ meat myself. yuck.
Brownstone Pizza in Eagle Rock
So I caught the episode of "We Mean Business" on A&E this am and wanted to check out this place after seeing the reviews here. I'm no big fan of the whole "New York" style pizza but I do like a good pie.
We ordered a veggie combo and added pepperoni and sausage since they had no combo that contained meat.
If you saw the show, In the end the owners pretty much dissed the designers and took down most of the features they installed like the menu board which forced us to order off little printed menus where the prices were incorrect. Additional toppings were listed at $2 each for the large, but we were charged $3 each. Now for 3 bucks, you would think the toppings would be loaded but we actually had to hunt for the pepperoni and sausages. We could not even tell they were there.
The pie didn't take too long to arrive and it was good but I would not call it great. The crust was black (like a previous poster said) but I kind of liked that. It definitely helped that we ate it there piping hot out of the oven. It was kind of bland and there was to much moisture from the fresh tomatoes because they buried them rather than toasting out the moisture on top. The crust was top notch though.
I hope this place lasts but I doubt it will... Maybe if the owners had actually taken the advice (and the generous upgrades and ideas the TV show provided them) they might have a better shot.
I might go back but I would not go out of my way to eat there again.
Hong Kong 88 on Sepulveda
We like the fish with black bean... fish is tender like a cloud, just like we like it. Hate the parking though, the parking spaces are crazy narrow and tight.

Fresh Korean BBQ - Van Nuys
Greenland has spicy tofu (along with a pretty good selection of other dishes) lthough I have no idea if it's as good as Soot Bull Jeep as I've never eaten there. I like Greenland's though.
Universal Studios Hilton Buffet; THE HORROR!
Details please? What did you not like about it? I thought it was rather fabulous and cannot fathom how you could have such a distaste for the place? Crowded as hell that Saturday evening we went but the selection and quality of food was phenomenal IMO.
In the SF valley for the summer.. need coffee!
2nd Rocky Roasters. I work a block away and enjoy it regularly. They roast fresh every day (I know. I can smell it!).
Anyone catch that makeover show on Style network that redid Rocky's? Place looks way nicer now (although i do miss the bulletin board :()
favorite fried chicken?
Angelina's in Alhambra has good Fried chicken.
My Brother's BBQ in Woodland Hills has excellent chicken as well.
Chili My SoAK US DRY!
Something I haven't seen mentioned in this thread... On my first visit, I spoke to the owner and he explained that many of his recipes take up to 36 hours to make. Something about a special de-fatting process and flavor simmering.
Much like true smokehouse BBQ joints, it's probably expensive because it's labor intensive.
That being said, I thought it was just OK. At the time, I thought the $10 bowl was $3 too much. $13 is just nuts for what it is.
Cheap Chinese (aka Orange Chicken) in the Alhambra area?
Trader joe's Orange chicken is way vinegary. If you like it sweeter, stay away.
Chicago Burrito in LA?
I often substitute lettuce and tomatoes for the beans and rice in burritos I order... When you are on a restricted carb diet, the extra huge tortilla alone is enough to push my 60 gram per meal carb limit so somethings gotta give. I wish more restaurants would be diabetic friendly... Not everyone can process 300+ grams of carbs in a single meal!
Gardena Bowl Cafe
If you like the non-casing, handmade patty variety, you can make your own pretty easy. Most asian markets sell NOH portuguese sausage mix... Add your own ground pork and maybe more chili pepper flakes and you're set.
