Korea Town Recommendations
I was at Hanbat the other night. Very reliable, inexpensive place. Nice banchan brought to table. Bibimbap is very good. Their Sul Run Tang is great, the broth has this great silky texture.

Rehearsal dinner - 50 people, $50pp including beer/wine???
My budget is $50-$70 per person including beer and wine, but not including tax and tip.
Rehearsal dinner - 50 people, $50pp including beer/wine???
No, $50 not including tax and tip...and can be a bit flexible if need to go up another $10-$20 or so pp..
Rehearsal dinner - 50 people, $50pp including beer/wine???
Looking to have a rehearsal dinner in Manhattan this winter on a Thursday night.
Will be having about 50 people. Would like to keep the budget under about $50 per person including beer and wine.
Pretty flexible about food, atmosphere, location....but one requirement is that we have our own private space.
Thanks!
Best Bibimbap in Manhattan
Agreed, had this the other week, very good. Rice gets nice and crispy from the hot stone bowl.
East Village interesting Japanese? Similar to Kyo Ya?
Thanks for the rec...I have indeed heard excellent things about the uni at Soto, I need to get over there.
East Village interesting Japanese? Similar to Kyo Ya?
Had never heard of this...got good reviews on Yelp...but whats the deal with what NYMag says -- exclusive club with only 200 keys given out?
East Village interesting Japanese? Similar to Kyo Ya?
Interesting...might have to wait until this place gets a bit more buzz before I dive in...unique strategy to do locally-sourced Japanese, most places tout how un-local they are, fish from Japan, etc.
East Village interesting Japanese? Similar to Kyo Ya?
I've heard excellent things about Kajitsu, it seems very interesting, and is on my list of places to try...alas I have a craving for uni that needs to be satiated!!!

East Village interesting Japanese? Similar to Kyo Ya?
I am looking for a restaurant in the East Village that has great and interesting Japanese food. Can be either a strictly-sushi place or a restaurant that does both hot food and sushi.
Kyo Ya was fantastic -- basically looking for something similar. I also enjoyed Kanoyama very much.
Thanks!

Yasuda - Omakase or A La Carte?
I am going to Yasuda tomorrow night for the first time. I am planning on doing Omakase at the sushi bar, but I was just wondering -- in terms of strictly economic terms, how does doing the omakase compare with ordering off the menu?
I see that on the menu, for $36 you can get the Sushi Matsu, which is 12 pieces of sushi and a half roll -- the selection is fairly broad, i.e. sea urchin, orange clam, etc.
If I want to spend $100 on omakase (before tax/tip), how much sushi am I getting for my money? I mean, for the same $100 I can get three orders of Sushi Matsu (i.e. THIRTY SIX PIECES OF SUSHI !!!).
Thanks!

Friday night - put our name down at Frontera -- 2 hour wait, so we went back to hotel, showered, etc., came back to the restaurant right in time to eat. Food was excellent, everything just tasted really solid, I was very impressed.
Saturday night - got into Schwa. This place is like nothing I've ever seen. The food is really different, really inventive, but the most unique part was the service. These guys are very funny, very over the top hipster vibe. Each dish was explained in great detail, but with a very "unique" flair, i.e. "So that black sh*t on your plate is aged balsamic, it's aged in Peruvian Oak barrels for 12 years or some sh*t...." We loved it. Very, very different. Highly recommended.
Also did lunch at Purple Pig, sitting outside was very nice. And grabbed a quick bite at Fox & Obel, which was a nice, typical upscale marketplace, but definitely enjoyed.
Trip was amazing, Chicago is a great city, and people are much more laid back than NYC.
New All Clad Stainless d5 line at W-S?
I read through this thread and may get myself some All Clad d5 pots and pans.
I was looking at the Williams Sonoma web site and am a bit confused -- I think people touched upon the difference between the d5 LTD2 that is anodize aluminum versus the d5 stainless steel, but what is the difference between the d5 Stainless steel versus d5 brushed stainless steel?
Is it looks only?
Long wait at Frontera -- nearby replacement?
I plan on going to Frontera Grill on Friday night for dinner with my girlfriend.
I am not going to be there when the doors open, and am concerned it is going to be a 2 hour wait when I arrive.
Any somewhat nearby alternatives -- definitely want to stick with Mexican food, and needs to be somewhere that has GREAT food like Frontera.
Thanks!

Might just have to try North Pond then! In keeping with the NYC analogy, it reminds me of Union Square Cafe, which I loved, even though it's nothing out of the ordinary other than very fresh high quality ingredients cooked excellently...

Thank you for those brunch recommendations; I think sampling some good Midwestern farm cooking would be an excellent idea!

Any recommendations for a quick and cheap breakfast? Not even looking for waiter service, maybe somewhere I can just grab a croissant or egg sandwich quickly...
Also, I'm a big coffee drinker -- I will be hitting up Intelligistia near Millennium Park -- any other recs for a great cup?

North Pond sounds good -- location sounds great. Food seems a bit on the "safe" side and expensive, but definitely will consider. Thank you.

Thanks for these recommendations. I would like to stay a bit closer to the central city, as I will have to factor in cab costs.
Bonsoiree in particular looks excellent, although it is kind of getting out there on the map...looks almost twice as far from Mag Mile as Schwa...not sure how far this is in real life versus what it looks like on map...

Good point on Frontera -- will try to get there before 9 then!
Purple pig looks excellent -- I know we were trying to keep this lunch on the very inexpensive side, but I think Purple Pig might just be able to sneak in there...

Going to Chicago July 30-Aug 1 with foodie girlfriend from NYC. Will be staying in North Michigan Avenue but will be around town doing various activities.
Friday:
Lunch: Picnic in Millenium Park (pickup food from Fox & Obel)
Dinner: Frontera Grill (no reservation, but will come try to come on late side, 10PM)
Saturday:
Lunch: Walking along Magnificent Mile, need recommendation -- something very casual and not expensive...but interesting and good...
Dinner: On wait list for Schwa. If I don't get in, need a rec -- pricewise would like to keep it under cost of Schwa. Looking for a unique/memorable experience without breaking the bank.
Sunday:
Brunch: The Publican
Thanks in advance for your help! We eat everything, love seafood, but don't have any restrictions...

Best Omakase for the money?
Was recently at E 50s location of Tenzan. For some reason I found the fish overly cold, to the point of being distracting from anything else.
Did have a yellowtail collar hot dish that was very good.
Home Cooking New York cooking classes?
Has anyone ever tried the Home Cooking New York (www.homecookingny.com) cooking classes?
I am thinking about doing this with my girlfriend. I am deciding between this and the Institute of Culinary Education (www.iceculinary.com) classes.
I think the one-on-one atmosphere and being in my own kitchen could be better than doing the group thing at ICE in a commercial kitchen.
Your favorite underrated burger?
Yes, I've had the Blackjack burger several times, and it is indeed delicious.
Best Omakase for the money?
I'm planning a special dinner for my girlfriend and I -- I would like to do a very nice omakase, but not as expensive as Masa or Yasuda.
I'd like to keep the price to about $100-$125 or so per person (before tax/tip).
I'm most interested in really high quality fish, don't need any crazy rolls or anything, just super high quality pure fresh sushi.
I've seen the same names thrown around on these boards (15 East, Ushiwakamaru, Gari, Seki, Sugiyama, etc.), but wasn't sure exactly how expensive omakase is at these places.
Thanks!
Fun, good and "moderate" dinner for celebrating
I was recently at Da Andrea -- very good food at extremely reasonable prices.
Dinner w/ Mom - not too expensive, but classy
My mom is coming into the city on a weekday to take me out to dinner. I'm looking for something not too expensive, say entrees under $15 or so. I'd like a place that has very nice decor -- as upscale as we can get for the price range.
As far as cuisine, I'm pretty much open to anything..
With regard to location, she is going to Port Authority after we eat -- we definitely don't have to eat in that area, but I don't want to make her travel too far, so I'd say anywhere within a sub-$10 cab ride would be okay.
W. 16th and 7th ave. - inexpensive delivery?
Hey Racer, thanks for those suggestions!
I tried Cafe Asean and DoSirak, both were good, I especially enjoyed DoSirak!!!
Oddly enough, both places must have very recently raised their prices, because both deliveries were $2 more than their menus on menupages indicated -- Asean even gave me a menu that had the old prices on it, while the DoSirak guy didn't have any menus with him.
But, both very good -- thanks!
W. 16th and 7th ave. - inexpensive delivery?
Pio Maya was good! Very inexpensive while at the same time good quality. They have a pretty big menu, so I'll have to try a few more things. Definitely adding this one to the rotation, thanks!

Thanks, I'll give Sushi on Hudson a shot!
