new dumpling restaurant Ann Arbor/Ypsi area

I ate at Yee Siang tonite & the "soft opening" seems toe fading. Most menu items were available & service was good.
In addition to the dumplings (yeah cilantro-lamb!), loved the garlic green beans & the silken tofu with preserved egg.

what's new/good in Harbor Country (Michigan)?

I must say the Blue Plate has declined. Baked good still wonderful, but the menu is much smaller & none of our 4 dishes were better than ok.

Chow-worthy Washtenaw (Ypsilanti)

So many new & interesting things opening on Washtenaw:
Casablanca Restaurant: Moroccan
Antonio's Coney Island: Honduran
Yee Siang Dumpling House: dumplings
Taqueria La Torre: tacos

My posse ate tonite at Casablanca(in former Blue Wolf Grill). Fabulous tagines, comforting harira soup, crusty fresh harsha, pungent harissa. Pleasant, capable servers. A winner all around!

Family vacation in Union Pier next week. I find the Cafe Gulistan and Blue Plate are good stand-bys.
What do you like between Michigan City to St. Joseph, and inland?

Pescatarian friendly in Lisbon? And other must eats

I only had 24 hrs in Lisboa, but loved an evening wandering around Alfama & stumbling into two hole-in-the-walls. We had grilled sardines & heard wonderful fado at semi-outdoor Restaurante St. Andre, just down a street or two from the Miradoura do Graca, lookout spot. Then a second fabulous, home-style dinner at the no-frills Restaurante Casa Eurico Ferreira, also in Alfama.
The fado really made the first stop. Food at Eurico was very Chow-worthy!

Katoi in Exile (Ann Arbor)

Among this summer's delights in Ann Arbor, Katoi (in exile). The one-time Corktown Thai food truck is serving up fab meals inside the old Jerusalem Garden this summer Wed-Sun. (While they build a permanent home in Detroit.)
Our first Katoi meal was a winner all around: helpful, accommodating servers, fresh flavors, and some new spins on Thai food. Ie, tofu made with garbanzos--really good.
This is where we plan to enjoy Thai food this summer!

Dos Hermanos Restaurant (Ypsilanti)

Tried the month-old Dos Hermanos Restaurant for dinner tonite, with four friends. Finally, a good Mexican restaurant in Washtenaw County!

A nice, spacious, if simple dining room. Not a simple taqueria, but rather a full menu of things that will interest most Americans (chimichangas, fajitas) & many things that will draw diners more familiar with Mexican food. Sopa de Mariscos, gorditas, pambazos, menudo, enchildas suizas, several aguas frescas, etc.

A spin off from the Dos Hermanos grocery/butcher shop up the street, the restaurant features a nice range of meats. I had the cecina plate & the meat was tender & tasty. The meat was accompanied by a surprising array: charred jalapenos, cebollitas, good guacamole, pico de gallo, and a slice of grilled cactus/nopal topped with chorizo. Even the refritos and arroz were very good! Nothing was greasy.

I was surprised to find an unusual regional specialty: the "Enchiladas Dos Hermanos"--very much like dish prepared in Morelia or San Luis Potosi. The tortillas are covered in a savory, slightly bitter ancho-guajillo sauce, served with a generous portion of cecina, and cubes of grilled carrot & potato.

Really looking forward to trying more from the ample menu.

Roasted Green Peppers in Lisbon??

I definitely had some padron peppers on my recent travels in Portugal. They are not really spicey, but rather bitter.

Thanks Boagman. I expected more from Ferndale. There are plenty of places to eat, but good ones?

One Eyed Betty's Ferndale (DTW)

BF & I wanted dinner near The Magic Bag. Skimming comments here + Yelp I expected good things at One Eyed Betty's. We did like the vibe and the service. The menu features a nice range of snacks & plates.
Our food, however, was utterly forgettable. Onion rings (much praised by Yelpers) were gummy, greasy. My shrimp in yellow curry was a gunky mess, served atop white rice, with not many veggies nor much heat. BF's "poor man's plate" had some pretty lame kielbasa, atop rice & beans & absolutely blanketed in melted cheese.
We're not beer drinkers, which seems to be the big draw here.
Food wasn't bad, but I won't be back.

Slows To-Go [DTW]

I've likes Slows To Go. Easy parking. Nice picnic tables in front. Happily ate our q out on the Riverwalk one summer evening.
Slows is good foodwise, but not amazing. Certainly not worthy of hassle of eating in the Corktown restaurant,

Anything new up north (Charlevoix, Petoskey, Indian River)? v 2013

Had dinner at Twisted Olive last week. Food was good, if uneven. Service was . . . odd. Very pushy sommelier. When my partner selected a glass of a specific Cote de Rhone, he received a (small) pour from a decanter, not the bottle.
For those prices, everything should have been better.

SOW Smoke on the Water (Charlevoix)

Had a delightful lunch at this year-old restaurant in downtown Charlevoix. The smoke refers to the excellent barbecue, but there is much more going on at this welcoming place. I also enjoyed a light corn chowder, made with coconut milk, and slight Asian flavors. Excellent burger with wild mushrooms & provolone.
They bake their own challah for toast, sandwiches.
Breakfast menu looks fabulous.
Serve was great--attentive & open to substitutions.
Open 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Breakfast in Porto near Rua Santa Catarina

Confeitaria Bolhao (Rua Formosa 339) has both a lovely selection of pastry & a gorgeous high-ceiling, belle epoque dining room. And coffee. Right across from the Formosa entrance to the Mercado Bolhao (food hall)--certainly worth a visit.

Majestic Cafe on Rua Santa Catarina is another grand dame historic cafe. But I haven't been there.

Look back in Hunger: Porto, Portugal.

In Lisbon, we enjoyed a mid-scale lunch at Tagide. It was good, the room & view is lovely. I was also jet-lagged . . .
More memorable was wandering around Alfama & stumbling into two hole-in-the-walls. We had grilled sardines & heard wonderful fado at semi-outdoor Resturante St. Andre, just down a street or two from the Miradoura do Graca, lookout spot. Then a second fabulous, home-style dinner at the no-frills Restaurante Casa Eurico Ferreira, also in Alfama.

In Porto, stop in at the delightful food shop Comer e Chorar por Mais (Rua Formosa), just a block from Mercado de Bolhao. Photos below. You would be smart to buy some cheese & bread from them & snack in a park. Staff is very knowledgeable, speaks great English.

A favorite dish throughout the trip was alheira, a chicken & game based sausage. Kinda smokey, wonderful mouthiness.

Alenquer (Portugal)

Highly recommend Casta 85 Restaurant in the historic town of Alenquer, about 30 km from Lisbon. The chef does excellent, updated versions of Portuguese dishes. My partner & I enjoyed fresh favas cooked with ribs, chourico, & the best morcela (blood sausage)I ate in Portugal. Then grilled fish on a bed of pureed vegetables & shrimp. I had a large, succulent grilled octopus on a bed of greens. SAdly, no oom for dessert.
The room, with open kitchen, is laid-back, elegant, and large windows overlook the Alenquer River & the Largo do Espiritu Santo. The service was excellent, though the staff's English skills were iffy.

Alenquer sees few foreign tourists, but rather weekenders from Lisbon & Sintra. We stayed at the comfortable 10-room Quinta do Covanco.

Just off the A1--great option for a night before the Lisbon airport.

Michigan meat..where to buy farm direct?

4H in Washtenaw County auctions off whole animals in early fall. You can bid on a whole pig, goat etc. Your purchase then goes to a local processor, cut as you desire.

eating low-carb in Portugal

I had a lovely stay in Portugal. Truly enjoyed meals centered on fish, sausage, cabrito, seafood. I learned to ask for possible substitutions of the ubiquitous batatas (potatoes). Sometimes this meant more cooked carrots, once it meant a double helping of greens.
For breakfast at a cafe, I ordered a sandwich with ham, cheese, tomatoes on pao integral--ate it open-faced.
The daily menu often includes dessert--again, I learned to as for fruit rather than cake or mousse.

eating low-carb in Portugal

I'm a type 2 diabetic and looking for healthy eating suggestions in Portugal. Heading to Lisboa & points north for two weeks. I'm looking forward to fish, seafood, sausage etc. I assume that green salads will be available at most restaurants.
I am kind of concerned about my breakfast options. Will eggs be available?

new taquerias in Ann Arbor/Ypsi

I had a fine meal at La Torre (1525 Washtenaw). My partner & I had tacos with four kinds of meat (lengua, asada, al pastor, carnitas)--all good, nicely portioned. The al pastor comes with delightful little cubes of caramelized pineapple. The tamal had a light masa & tasty meat-chile filling--spicy. We liked all three salsas.

This is a no frills place. Just a store-front, with 5 small tables. But the cook-owner & his family provided good food, with pleasant service, at low prices.

Next weekend: pozole!
