eating low-carb in Portugal

I'm a type 2 diabetic and looking for healthy eating suggestions in Portugal. Heading to Lisboa & points north for two weeks. I'm looking forward to fish, seafood, sausage etc. I assume that green salads will be available at most restaurants.
I am kind of concerned about my breakfast options. Will eggs be available?

I think the food is great at Food Dance. In terms of ambiance, nice if not really fancy.

new taquerias in Ann Arbor/Ypsi

I had a fine meal at La Torre (1525 Washtenaw). My partner & I had tacos with four kinds of meat (lengua, asada, al pastor, carnitas)--all good, nicely portioned. The al pastor comes with delightful little cubes of caramelized pineapple. The tamal had a light masa & tasty meat-chile filling--spicy. We liked all three salsas.

This is a no frills place. Just a store-front, with 5 small tables. But the cook-owner & his family provided good food, with pleasant service, at low prices.

Next weekend: pozole!

new taquerias in Ann Arbor/Ypsi

The Ann Arbor area has a bad track record for sustaining good quality taquerias. The laudable ones come and go (remember "Taco Boy"?). The ones that stand are of mixed quality (Tmaz, Taco King). That said, I have hopes for the newest arrivals.

La Torre Taqueria, 1525 Washtenaw, Ypsilanti
I haven't been yet, but the menu is straight-up tacos, tortas & menudo--and priced cheap for immigrant eaters.

Mi Compadre Restaurant, 2111 Packard, Ann Arbor
More of a full menu, including chicken w/ mole, Oaxacan specialties incl tlayudas, tortas (on home-baked rolls?!). Ate there in the "soft opening": food was so-so, prices were higher than local taquerias, service was a mess. My companion & I agreed that the food was neither good nor bad.

I also have my hopes pinned on
8 Tortas, soon to open at 3584 Plymouth Rd (Plymouth/Green shopping center), Ann Arbor.

What are the hot restaurants in Ann Arbor these days?

I don't drink, but Jolly Pumpkin's food & vibe is good enough for it to be my go-to place on Main Street. Food is a mix of well-done bar stuff (excellent burger, unusual pizza, truffle fries) and farm-to-table sandwiches & entrees. And for farm-to--table, a reasonable price point.

What are the hot restaurants in Ann Arbor these days?

Slurping Turtle--yes.
Tomukun Grill, if you are both carnivores.
On Main St: Jolly Pumpkin.
If you need a great coffee, Mighty Good (on Main St, or on South University).

Michigan Spanish purveyors of food

Morgan & York--an Ann Arbor wine/gourmet shop--imports quite a bit from Spain. Zingerman's as well.

Seldon Standard - Detroit

I second most of Elyssa's comments. At dinner last night, we also really enjoyed the polenta with tomato-porcini sauce.
Bread (while made in house) was not too exciting.
Service was excellent.
Skipped dessert as I was happily sated with the celery root agnolotti with short ribs ragu . . .

Blimpy Burger (Ann Arbor) update

Figuring that a Monday 1 p.m. wouldn't turn into a long wait, my party of 3 returned to Blimpy Burgers. We waited an HOUR. There were plenty of tables, but things took forever at the grill. Thus the line moved slower than molasses. Inexcusable given that they opened 2 months ago.

The food was pretty good, but no reason to return. And certainly not "cheaper than food".

Consistently good Korean in a modest storefront setting: BeWon on Plymouth Rd. Alot of Korean diners there. Every meal starts with a complimentary spread of banchan.
On Main St, I've had many enjoyable meals at the Jolly Pumpkin.

I loved Haifa Falafel for most of its existence. My last dinner there in late summer was a definite step down. Will go again, but worried.

Low-Carb in Detroit

I'm a low-carber (Type 2 diabetic). I find that I can eat well at Lebanese places. I'm very happy with a chicken tawook or another grilled meat such as kefta, plus a big zesty fattoush (hold the pita chips).

I feel like the prices went up significantly a few months after opening. Nothing against El Harissa, but I'm pretty in love with the neighboring Juicy Kitchen.

Regional Mexican restaurants

Interesting thread! Chicago has alot of people from Jalisco, Zacatecas & Michoacan. Biria & carnitas are common in the neighborhoods. Be on the look out for gorditas (my favorites at the taqueria @Carniceria Aguascalientes, 3132 W 26th St).
Many people from Guerrero--land of pozole verde! Pozoleria San Juan (1523 N. Pulaski) has red, white AND green pozole.

Monday Lunch in Pilsen

Along the lines of El Milagro, I suggest Casa del Pueblo (on Blue Island, half a block south of 18th). Very simple, order-at-the-steam-table. Tamales & an array of guisados (stews), soup, rice--very much the way my mother-in-law cooks in Mexico City. If there is tortas de camaron con nopales, try that!

Straight-up taqueria, I love Los Comales #2 (18th, just east of Ashland). Every table has jalapenos & other veg in escabeche. Order a side of cebollitas with your tacos, squeeze on the limes& enjoy with your tacos, tostadas, tortas etc.

Interesting indeed. Linguistics aside, I mightily enjoyed a recent stop at Alcamo's & many spoonfuls of the ammoglio in the days following.

Best China (Canton MI)

Went Saturday evening. Small place--of the 8 tables, 7 occupied by immigrant Chinese. Alot of real-deal Chinese food on their menu.Service was rushed & my party didn't have enough time to order thoughtfully from the intriguing menu.
Many tables had ordered the roast duck, so we did too. Good. Will definitely be back though.

Most robust coffee beans available in Detroit

Mighty Good (from Ann Arbor) is available packaged in many Detroit-area stores. They do excellent dark roast coffees, yet low on acidity.

Slurping Turtle--Ann Arbor

I met a friend for lunch. At 1 p.m., we waited 10 minutes for a table. Note most seating is at long counter-like shared table.
I was impressed w/ the unique fried Brussels sprouts hot starter. My mushroom-tofu whole wheat ramen dish was good: studded w/ asparagus, baby bok choy & grilled eggplant. My friend's pork ramen was amazing--lovely broth.
Overall, I would say ST does a better job than Tomukun. But busy/crowded--not for all diners.

Weekend in Ann Arbor with a 2 year-old: suggestions?

Take your daughter on the train ride at Greenfield Village. Eat Lebanese ice cream at Shaatila (cool locale too--indoor palm trees).
When you go to Ann Arbor's Hands On Museum, you're 2 blocks from the best coffee: Might Good on Main St.
Another kid-friendly thing is AA's Leslie Science Center--which as a toddler friendly Critter Room. And that gets you near a great Korean fried chicken place: Seoul Street.
And then there's the Farmers Mkt (Saturday 7am-2 pm)--some reasonable snacking. Right by Zingermans Deli + Hands On + Mighty Good.

Jerusalem Garden in A2 moving, I don't know how to feel

I simply don't understand all the love for Jerusalem Garden. This would be a tasty, cheap option in many college towns. But JG's version of Middle Eastern food is sub-par for southeastern Michigan.
That said, I get the reference to the loss of Drake's. Not unlike my nostalgia at the closing/move of Blimpy Burgers.
