The new Le Bec Fin

Went the first weekend after the reopening for dinner and loved it. The room, service and food are much improved -- reminded me a bit of Per Se, but without the view. It will set you back at least 500 per couple for dinner though; order a few decent bottles of wine and you're getting close to a grand. I wonder how they are doing from a numbers standpoint; always seems to be plenty of available seats at opentable.com.

BYOB wihtin walking distance of Four Seasons

There are quite a few wines on their list at less than $50, but nothing that I would say is extraordinary. My point is, if you have some classic Bordeaux et al in the cellar, then it is hard to beat drinking them at the Four Seasons Fountain Restaurant -- their staff is great -- even with a $30 corkage.

Shola's opening a restaurant in the Piazza. Finally. I hope.

The whole concept of pre-paying for a reservation at a restaurant, almost 2 months in advance, is certainly unique in Philadelphia. Come to think of it, I've not seen anything like this ANYWHERE. It's not like we're talking about his Studio Kitchen dinners in his home, this is at his restaurant -- Ko doesn't even charge you until the day of the dinner! I'll probably try it out though :-)

DeTerra Wine Bar - all I can say is wow!

We went a few weeks ago, and I was not impressed. Given the new chef -- by way of Blackfish -- I had high hopes for Dettera, but I was supremely disappointed. The food was incredibly bland, and the "Peekytoe Crab and Melon Salad" takes the cake as the worst dish I've had in 2010. The menu described the pancetta as "crispy" but I think "chewy as boot leather" would have been a more accurate description. The "Sauteed Gnocchi" was totally lacking in flavor, and the gnocchi was dense and weighty. The "Grass Fed Veal Chop" was uninspiring, and completely lacking in salt. We won't be back; I'll drive the extra 15 minutes to Blackfish, or hop on the train to center city. Dettera -- a swing and a miss!
