Local source for pink salt / instacure #1

I got some at Williams Sonoma at the mall in Salem NH. Might have been more expensive than bulk from Christina's, but a lot closer for me.

Pink Curing Salt in Southern NH?

Does anyone know of anywhere where I can pick up some pink curing salt in southern NH? I saw the Boston threads where people mentioned Christina's, but I was hoping that someplace close to home carried it. Thanks!

Montreal foodie visiting Portland/Portsmouth in July - reco's needed

Had no idea that Evans sold Hugo's. Hugo's was one of the best. Admittedly, my visits of the last year or two had less of a "wow" factor....one of my favorite and most memorable dishes was a Foie Gras Panna Cotta with a Tangarine aspic-type layer....but recent visits used more "normal" ingredients with mainstream preparations. They used to have a menu section of more adventurous dishes that used offal and unconventional ingredient pairings, but that has been gone for a while. Even so, the new direction was still better than what I've had in Boston and elsewhere. Was planning on going this weekend. Will find out if the transition was seamless.

24 hours in Manchester NH

I've been impressed with Mint Bistro, which has an extensive menu including sushi. Also love Republic and they use local ingredients.

Portland, for sure.

Another Dissent on O-Ya

Having visited both Uchi in Austin and O-Ya, I would agree with this assessment. Interestingly though, I think that I was expecting more of an O-Ya experience at Uchi, so I was a little underwhelmed. (And I had visited Uchi prior to O-Ya.)

Seeking restaurant recomendations: where to take my BF for the big 3-0?

Haven't been to everywhere that has been mentioned in the thread, but I have been to Craigie, Salts, O Ya, Island Creek Oyster Bar, as well as L'Espalier, and definitely agree with the Hugo's suggestion. Still my favorite out of all the establishments I have listed and gladly drive up there for an amazing meal.

Help! Seeking a Bruins game in the woods!

Ended up at the Holy Grail in Epping, which we have been to in the past. Close to home and while the food isn't anything to write home about, they have a really good beer selection--especially what's on draft.

You must be right, obraustin!

Kitchen/flavor changes at S&I

Nearly every version of Tom Kha that I have had in various parts of the country has had inedible whole slices of galangal, pieces of lemon grass, and sometimes the kaffir leaves. I do not think it is inappropriate for this type of soup.

Thai Tom Kha Tofu anywhere in Boston? I'm desperate!

Haven't been to S and I, but I checked out the menu online and I only see Tom Kha Gai as a small serving. I haven't come up with any Tom Kha Tofu in my searches. *sigh*

Thai Tom Kha Tofu anywhere in Boston? I'm desperate!

Anyone know of anywhere in the area that serves a Tom Kha Tofu (not the Gai with chicken) that is also a fire pot and served with rice? Heck, I would even take the smaller soup serving size with tofu. I used to get this all the time in Austin TX and can't find Tom Kha Tofu at all up here! Many thanks.

Best Place to Watch Bruins Game?

Can anyone recommend a good place to watch the Bruins game tomorrow night? Anywhere from Manchester to Portsmouth and south to Methuen/Mass? Something with good TVs and good/interesting choices of beer on draft (not just Sam Adams and Bud)? Decent food would be a bonus.

Whole Foods Nashua??

Can't say I agree with the comparison between Wegmans and Whole Foods *IF* they are building a large Whole Foods store with the bells and whistles. I have been to some small and crappy Wegmans that don't even have a bakery as good as Market Basket. However, I must admit that I come from Austin TX, home of the flagship Whole Foods. Now that I'm up in NH, the closest Whole Foods is in Andover and it isn't anything special.

German food in Hooksett NH--Bavaria Restaurant

"They get at lot of their products from Germany"? What could they possibly be importing from Germany?? They certainly aren't importing meat or vegetables. They say the spatzle is homemade, so they aren't importing that. Most of their beer options are readily available in the vicinity.... ?????

German food in Hooksett NH--Bavaria Restaurant

Maybe word was passed on that the owner/hostess did not have the sunniest disposition. Or maybe there is a new hostess. Either way, glad that has improved.

I still have trouble with the $20+ price point for, yes, basic biergarten entrees. I did visit the Wirsthaus in Methuen a while back. Prices are less for the same type of food. Similar quality and portions to Bavaria, in my opinion. Beer prices seems less as well. But a much farther drive for me.

Hard to say, Highland Park. If the attitude of the hostess was icy within the first 2 months of the restaurant being open (when one would expect that new owners would be excited to welcome customers and thus be overly friendly), I don't think the reception is likely to improve.

German food in Hooksett NH--Bavaria Restaurant

I agree with the unwelcoming hostess. We have been to Bavaria three or four times, and it has been the same icy reception each visit. Each time, I felt like it was a bother to seat us....or that we just weren't welcome. If germangirl61 is correct and the woman is the owner, it's not a good way to greet people and they are going to lose some customers (even if they are one of the few decent places to eat in the area). And if the place really requires reservations on the weekends, it would have been nice for the hostess to mention that to Highland Park. A simple "we are so busy on the weekends, but would love to have you. It's best to make reservations for the weekend in advance" would be a good start. At those prices, you'd expect a little service.

While I liked the food and the waitress was great each time, I have not been back in a while. I thought the prices were high and, honestly, I did not feel welcome. However, I will say that it is good to hear that they are busy on the weekends, because I hate to see businesses fail.

Best Sunday lunch/brunch spot: Craigie on Main or L'Espalier?

Here's an update. We ended up going to brunch at Craigie on Main. First time at the restaurant. The wife had the haddie hash and I had the scallops on grits. Also ordered a side of the pork belly. Everything was really exceptional. I thought the portion sizes were good (although, I will say that I decided not to order the beef hash based on a smaller portion size I saw at an adjacent table). Restaurant was packed at 1pm, so very happy to have called ahead for a reservation. Nice atmosphere and great service. Definitely need to try dinner.

Yes, from the menu, L'Espalier has lunch on Sunday while Craigie has brunch. The menu from Mistral looks interesting as well! Thanks for all the replies!

Will be in Boston and I am looking for a great Sunday lunch/brunch spot. Looking at Craigie on Main or L'Espalier. Is one better than the other? Any other options I should consider? And finally, are reservations necessary at that time? Thanks!

Raw Oyster Bars in SE NH?

Can anyone recommend a good oyster or raw bar in SE NH? I went to Surf in Nashua last week and was happy to find oysters there, but I live east of Manchester off 101 and Nashua is a bit of a hike. Are there any good options on the Seacoast? Would love to find a bar with a good number of options (Surf had 3 varieties). Thanks!

Yes, the prices are for real unfortunately. I think we've been back once or twice but it really is an expensive meal. My next trip will be to the Wirsthaus in Methuen, as I have read some good reviews. It's also a good $10 less per plate than Bavaria.
