What to Order at Scampo

Reviving this conversation... What is highly recommended to order at Scampo this season (December 2013)? I haven't been for a while, but recently had the white truffle pizza with the figs. I asked for proscuitto and arugula on top. Delicious. Any other recommendations for next time?

December 2013 Openings and Closings

I agree. Market was good for a comfortable meal, and did have Vongerichten's touch and hype at the beginning, but as many trendy restaurants do--especially those collaborated on by celebrity visionaries who subsequently spread themselves too thin--lost its sparkle and soul through the years. The best meal I had at Market was my first one, a couple of months after they opened. Not impressed with their pop up brunch menu yesterday.

Wowee. It honestly is a miracle that either one of them lasted this long--even given the tourist effect.

Good Polish restaurant OTHER than Cafe Polonia?

Bronwyn in Somerville deserves a mention. Though more German & Central/Eastern European than strictly Polish in focus, the food is still reminiscent of similar flavors and the updated menu does include things like pierogi with potatoes and sauerkraut, potato pancakes, kielbasa with sauerkraut and potatoes, pork schnitzel with red cabbage and potatoes, and 5 Polish bottled beers.

Truly Bostonian Restaurants

This is where I take out of town friends:

Seafood: You have to go to Union Oyster house and sit in the ancient seats at the oyster bar where Paul Revere used to hang out. Have the oysters, go elsewhere for dinner. Island Creek Oyster Bar (if you want a high end experience) or Barking Crab (if you prefer picnic tables facing the harbor, pitchers of beer, and cracking open lobsters with an actual stone).

Boston Traditional: Durgin Park or Kitchen Restaurant. Neither is super crazy great, but they are Boston traditional. Don't bother with Amrheins. I like it a lot for watching games, but it is just traditional pub food that you can get anywhere.

Best (Expensive) Restaurants: Menton (Creative American/French) and O Ya (Sushi).

Unusual Food (Offal): Coppa or Craigie on Maine. They both make their own cured and unusual stuff inhouse. Craigie has a pig's head for two, which makes for a memorable dish. Coppa's beef heart pastrami is delicious.

Italian for Non-New Englanders: Nothing beats the lobster/seafood pasta plate for two at Giacomo's. It is The North End restaurant, that often has a line down the street. Very fresh and memorably delicious. Make sure you order the Giacomo's sauce, and then the diablo sauce on the side. Erbaluce is good for creative high end Italian.

Steak: My current favorite is a new place--Boston Chops. They are not a chain (like most of the rest) and have a wide range of very tasty steaks.

Vietnamese: Dorchester has some great Vietnamese food, rivaled only by San Francisco, in my experience. I would recommend Anh Hong and Pho Le. Get the 7 course beef or seafood at Anh Hong. Very good and quite an experience.

Other Asian: The new place in Dorchester (Van Shabu) has a $20 all you can eat shabu hot pot plus sushi during lunch. My favorite shabu for dinner is in China Town, called Shabu-Zen. When in China Town, I also recommend Peach Farm, New Jumbo Seafood, Taiwan Cafe, Taiwan Cafe, and Xinh Xinh.

African: Blue Nile in JP or Asmara on Mass Ave for Ethiopian/Eritrean food. Or do yourself a great favor and go to Chopped Chef Winner's Taranga on Washington Street for very tasty and not expensive Senegalese Cuisine.

Oleana in Cambridge, if in your budget, for amazing Mediterranean food.

Bon Apetit!

Is truly different even out there anymore?

Hi fellow Chowhounds,

I am disillusioned. I eat out every night and it always seems to be the same menu, no matter where I go. I have had Creative American, Italian, NE Seafood, high end sushi and several other Asian types, barbecue, Indian, etc, all in the past two weeks, and at this point I can only eat a bite without getting bored. Is anyone truly doing anything creative out there anymore??? I would love and appreciate suggestions of unusual ethnic food or other creative things going on that I may not have heard of yet. Otherwise I may have to start my own restaurant, and believe me, we don't want that to happen... Thanks Chowhounds!!!

Good Eggplant Parm

Who makes good eggplant parmesan in the city--meaning thick cut, brined, seasoned, with fresh mozzarella and homemade thick stewed basil tomato sauce over fresh pasta? Does anyone?? I would love to go out for this sometime and try something better than I can make myself.

February 2012 Openings and Closings

Moko is now open on E. Broadway in Southie, in the old Terrie's Place space. They serve sushi and hot Japanese and Korean entrees, and seem to be aiming toward a more high-end feel, relative to the other Southie sushi joints, although nothing on the menu was over $20. I ate there last week and did enjoy several of their relatively creative maki rolls. The kalbi was also fairly tasty, and served with a small assortment of traditional kimchee accompaniments. They were also planning on starting delivery service very soon.

Anyone have any news on Wolfie's in South Boston? Old Kelly's Landing space. I saw that the sign just went up a few days ago and the inside has looked finished for a while...

New to Southie

In the new waterfront convention center Southie district, so many new restaurants are in process of opening up right now that someone else will have to help you... I recommend you just shell out the extra two dollars and go in to Boston proper. If not possible, here are some suggestions for Old Southie. For a late night bite with pick-up scene, Franklin Southie. Sushi, Teriyaki House is the best you can do in the neighborhood. Indian takeout, Cafe Mamtaz. Awesome Italian, Cafe Portobello (cash only) is a cozy spot. Comfort delivery pizza (creative toppings), Olympic Pizza. Other good pasta/pizza delivery, Alfredo's Kitchen. Pubs, I recommend Junction, in terms of food quality and live music, or Amrheins (good chef). Playwright (if underage girls is your thing). Sports bars, you have your pick--Stats, Boston Beer Garden, Shenanigans, or Stadium. There is a new place I haven't yet been to in the old Farragut space (cafe 149) that should be open any day now, if not already...

South Boston revival?

Checked out American Provisions yesterday, and they are indeed a very welcome addition to the neighborhood! Gorgeous cheese selection (including burrata), Kinnealey Prime beef, duck confit, fois gras, fresh spices and things like blood oranges and other accouterments. So excited! Southie has come a long way...

Need good Saturday afternoon North End recommendation

My vision is a perfect Saturday afternoon in North End, relaxing in a patio setting over classic summer Italian fare and a bottle of wine. I have a few old standbys, but would love to try something new. Any suggestions regarding the perfect venue?

Great romantic dinner on a balmy late Monday night?

Thanks, SmartChow! I haven't been to any of the places mentioned except Dante and was considering Atasca, but was alarmed by some of the very bad reviews on Yelp in the past month.

Great romantic dinner on a balmy late Monday night?

Mondays can be tough--and especially after 9pm. Other than staying in, what might be a fabulous romantic dinner option for a pair of foodies on a balmy Monday night?
