Our Preferred Ensenada Restaurants

Thanx again, i have Agave on my list too as streetgourmetLA spoke highly of them. So far...all his recomendations have been right on the money. I will make sure to look for those dishes. My next trip is fri thru sun may 13 thru 15 so i guess if i am going to get my Manzanilla fix I'll have to do it on friday. Chow

Thanx for the specific info, i was planning to go there anyway but i hadnt heard that that was the stand out dish (i have rest here that i go to for one specific dish too). The other place on my list i haven't got to that i have the highest of hopes for is Laja. So far...Manzanilla has been my favorite but my last 3 trips were early in the week and i guess they are only open thur thru saturday.

Sorry..i guess i didn't read your mahi post all the way to the bottom. I also love la Guerrerense but i think of street stands in a category and walk in restaurants as another category. Why would the chow hound police edit you for stating your favorite restaurants, every one else here can? Haliotis is one of the few on my list i have not gotten to yet and will def be getting to in one of my next 2 trips this year (one in may, one in september).

Well...i would be interested in knowing what seafood places you think are better. I do go around and I've been to most of the places listed by foodies and reviews by food critics and recomendations given to me. Everyone has differant tastes and opinions. On another thread you speak highly of mahi mahi, i've eaten there twice and i did not think the food there was very good at all.

I'll have to try las primas...sounds good. I'll be goin there in may . Totally agree on Bara Azul, i always try to make sure Bara Azul and la Guerrerense gets a visit every time i go. and Bara Azul owns Ultramarino which is great for a quick snack, love their tempura oyster tacos and they make a really good mojito

Best Breakfast in ensenada

Well,I haven't stopped in tj for years but tijuana for me was always too big, too busy, dirty and then i have concerns about safety. Some of the food reviews have made me think about doing a food run some day, it's not out of the question but i have always much preferred the ambiance of ensenada.

thanx, just so happens i'll be staying at hotel coral in may and will be needing a brunch on Sunday so i'll definately try that. usually avoid tj so although that place sounds great, probly not go there. I'll put cafeteria monique on my list of places to try, i'm only there 2 days in may but when i go in September i'll be there for 5 days Thanx for the tips though, always great to find new great places to go. Best Breakfast in ensenada

So...I have found many amazing places to eat in Ensenada for lunch and dinner. But, as far as breakfast goes...nothing great yet. El Rey Sol is good...but if you have ever had breakfast at campanile in L.A. or brunch at Langhams in San Marino...well...that is a much higher level. So...are there any really really good places for breakfast or brunch that would rival the kind of places i'm talking about? Thanx

Hmmm, lots of places here i've not heard of. I do know and love barra azul and manzanilla, havent been able to try muelle tres cause they are always closed when i try. I've heard of viento but havent been. I will be going to laja on one of my upcoming trips. So...for a real foodie and chef, which of these places should i really try to get to of the following...(Boules, Belio, Viento, Gazuza, El sarmiento, La casa del Arte)

Ensenada...The good...the average...and the questions

Thanx, I'll make Laja my 1st experiance for my trip when i get to that area. And...i am getting some great leads and comments from streetgourmetla. Love that guy and I've never even met him but every lead he has highly recommended have been right on target. The next thing I'm dying to try after reading his review will be El agave Gastro bar for the fried grasshopper tacos with green salsa. Never tried grasshoppers but...I'm game

Ensenada...The good...the average...and the questions

So...it sounds like if i was looking to have a great meal in the guadalupe valley...My choices are 1 Laja (which sounds like may be open all year) or 2 Sylvestre (which is only open in the summer...i"ll have to get concrete info on when that is) or 3 Villa Saverios (which i need to ascertain if its open all year or not). The link to laja has a link to menu but its under construction. Def will make sure i research and make reservations before heading out there.

Ensenada...The good...the average...and the questions

I've heard very good things about a couple places in the guadalupe valley (probly the places you are mentioning) but have not been as of yet. I think at least one of them also has lodging and many people who are going there for dining also stay there (not sure which one(s).I'll have to plan a trip to do this myself. Laja is one and what is the name of the place which is the sama owner as Muelle Tres?

Wow, surprised to hear your meal at manzanilla was not great. i've only been twice (my trips down recently have been nights they are closed) but i had really good meals both times. Muelle Tres is the same owner actually and i have not gotten there yet.. where is Laja and is fish the specialty there also?

Sorry to post this here but i cant figure out how to e-mail streetgourmetla directly and i see he posted here. I posted a trip report in regards to ensenada a few days back and no one has responded and i would be interested in streetgourmetla opinion on my lobster comments and if he has tried and liked haliotis and could tell me how to find it. Also if you have tried Oaxaca@viento and if you liked it and where that is. Thanx, sorry again for posting here...tridogg

Ensenada...The good...the average...and the questions

3 trips to ensenada in the last month gives lots to report. I am a chef myself so i am particular. Here goes...My trips were all sunday monday so unfortunatly I could not hit my fav manzanilla...So... I'll start with the good...i did finally got to bara azul which was quite excellant and very reasonable albeit off the main areas most tourists go (calle once @ mar), i will go back here for sure. I also went to the same chefs little bar/seafood snack place (ultramarinoo) every time i went...it is on ruiz just off lopes mateo...the tempura oyster tacos are not to be missed, yum...great mojitos tambien...Also had a really good meal at punto morro....kind of pricey for mexico but i enjoyed dinner...ambiance is killer too...Waves are crashing right up to the windows... La Guerrerense is a revalation...amazingly good and amazingly cheap..if the was a zagat guide it would def be in the best bang for your buck category...Now for the average but remember i am particular. Covelli clay oven pizza 637 miramar. Many rave about this place...i enjoyed it but if you have had pizza at spago or chez pannisse or in the south of france...well...its not that good but its better than most chain places and i think it's good ensenada has "decent Pizza". Ditto for Hogaz Hogaz in the same shopping lot...it is european bakery and its good and i"m glad it"s there but if you frequent La Brea bakery or spent time in the south of france...well...its ok. Now for the questions and comments...I was going to eat at the cocedora de langosta but the lobster dishes are $40 to $50...and i'm pretty sure it's pacific lobster. I think live main lobster is far superior to pacific and I can usually find that here at those prices so unless someone can convince me i am really missing something here...i am tempted to pass. Also...I have heard there is a really good place called Haliotis but i spent over an hour trying to find it to no avail. And...some information to pass along. I tried to go to caprichos and that place is now a sports bar called papi's...Then...the next day while i was leaving covellis...I saw a couple of chefs across the street in what was La embotelladora which i know has closed so i went over to ask if there was a new rest going in and much to my surprise...Caprichos will be going in at that location (666miramar) but it will be at least 2 months before they open. Tijuana And Ensenada Food Maps

I thought that the best couple dozen places were more stable than that. It was great to see an article in the times last week saying things are getting better in tj and people are starting to go back. Everything from the newspapers has been so negative that it seems to promote "the fear".

Tijuana And Ensenada Food Maps

I posted this at the end of another thread but decided to start a specific thread. I (and I am sure many others) would love to see and have a street map with all the great taco stands and restaurants "dotted" with notations off to the side. I am thinking streetgourmetla and a few of his knowledgeable friends could put this together rather easily. I would be willing to buy the damn thing. It would make it so much easier for those of us who don't go there very often to get to all these places. Just a thought...

Taco Hunting in North Baja

After reading all of the amazing sounding posts on the tijuana and ensenada taco scene, I think it would be a great idea if someone would create separate maps with all these great places notated. A sort of easy taco stand travel map.

Ensenada...Looking for 2 Places....

Well...streetgourmetlLA has given me some very good leads to try for my next visit in september (in addition to the ones i had already found) but the 2 places i've heard great things about that i want to add to the list is 1. El Fenix (known for great fish tacos) and 2. Cocedora De Langosta (known for great lobster). Butta...i just would like to know where they are located. Normally i would just ask around when there but i tried that with manzanilla last april and i was wondering around for hours (most people had never heard of it and others gave me bad directions) before finally finding it. Totally worth it...food was amazing but this next time i would like to have my places all lined up with exact locations before i get there. Thanks in advance.

Thanx for all these great leads. I was a chef in l.a. for 20 plus years and whenever i travel i always try to research all the great food establishments. Now i live in lake arrowhead. I love ensenada and started going down there to do the rosarito ensenada bike rides. So...i'm logging all this information and eager to try all these places. Where are Cocedora de langosta and El fenix?
