Birthday dinner between Chicago and Milwaukee

Any ideas for a restaurant with great food, nice ambience, possible outdoor dining, not stuffy, good wine and beer list, that is between Gold Coast and Milwaukee? I am thinking perhaps Highland Park, Highwood, Lake Bluff, or Libertyville. Would love some recommendations!!

Suggestions for a Milwaukee/Chicagoan relocated to Jackson, MS

My son has just moved to Jackson and I am trying to find some good local restaurants for him to try. I thought that I would compile a bunch of gift certificates for him. He is 22 and likes good fish, steak, and ethnic food. Would love to have any suggestions that you locals can give me! I can certainly reciprocate with suggestions for Milwaukee/Chicago!

Thanks.

Brown Graduation Weekend I KNOW I AM LATE!

I am trying to find a restaurant for 8-10 people for Saturday and Sunday nights of Graduation weekend, which happens to be Memorial Day Weekend. I do not mind driving a short distance out of town to avoid the craziness of Providence. Any suggestions? Thanks!!

Anything new in Aspen?

Well, it took a year for me to see this post but at least you can make the brisket for This years Super Bowl!!! The meat that I use is simply beef brisket. You can get it at Costco or any supermarket. The key is that it should not be too lean! The ones at Trader Joes are often too lean. The same is at Fresh Market. I like to buy a whole brisket which weighs 4-5 lbs. It shrinks while cooking. And, if you have too much, it freezes really well! Enjoy!!

Pre-theater dinner near The Cadillac theater

I will be arriving at Union Station in Chicago on Saturday, March 10th at around 4:30. I wanted to drop my luggage off at the hotel, The Silversmith, and then get dinner before a 8:00 performance at The Cadillac Palace Theater. I will be traveling with a 13 year old girl with severe lactose intolerance issues. Any thoughts about a restaurant recommendation either close to the theater or some place between the theater and the hotel? The hotel is located at 10 south Wabash. The theater is
at 151 w. Randolph.

Suggestions?

Racine, Wisconsin

A few places come to mind. First, Totero's. It is a little house on the South side of Racine that serves home cooked Italian food. There are not a lot of choices, you just go up to the kitchen door, order and the owner fills a plate and hands you a bib, a plate of food and silverware. Then march to the bar and order a drink. The lasagna (Wednesdays) is AMAZING!

Second, The Soup! It is a new restaurant in the center of town on Main street that serves home made soups and salads and sandwiches. Really wonderful for a light lunch. Susan, the owner is amazing and all the soups (usually five choices daily) are wonderful.

Sebastians is good but it is not at the level of fine dining that you would expect in a larger city. The food is good but the ambience is not great. Just a thought........

Oh Dennis's is a terrific place for ribs. It is on Douglas near where Sebastian's is in Caledonia.

Out of the Pan is a good lunch place. Lots of good salads and sandwiches.

And, you have to try kringle from either Larsens or O&H while you are in town! It is de riguer.......

Enjoy! If you are looking for breakfast you can get a great one at Yuni's on Washington!

Convenient restaurant for meeting between Miami Fountainbleu and Delray Beach. Need ASAP because it is tomorrow! Easy to get to!

I will be meeting someone for dinner tomorrow night in Fort Lauderdale. I would love to get some emergency recommendations for a good, not overly priced, restaurant in between the Fountainebleu and Delray Beach. There will be four of us dining! Would like a place that is not too loud but has great food. Figured that Fort Lauderdale would be best.

Sorry for the rush on the responses!

Dinner for 7 women near the Fontainebleu

Looking for a nice place for dinner near the Fontainebleu. We will be eating in the restaurants in the hotel fairly often so looking for a place near enough to possibly walk but a short cab ride is good as well. Italian, Seafood, whatever. Not UBER fancy but quiet enough to talk and good food. Thanks.

*Your* secret to great apple pie?

First, definitely saute the apples with a bit of apple jack. Also once the apples are placed in the crust, put the crumble topping over it and THEN put the lattice on. The pie is beautiful and YUMMY.

Milwaukee fine dining

Adding to the chorus for Sanford. I also have to say that the atmosphere at Carnevor is not what you are likely looking for. I just don't think it is anywhere near the caliber restaurant as Sanford or Lake Park Bistro. Enjoy!

For your birthday, if you are looking for something more casual but with really good food, try some of the new spots on the South Side in Bay View. Pastiche is wonderful. also, not new but lovely is Crazy Water in Walker's Point. Enjoy!!

Cafe Benelux Milwaukee. Did we just hit a bad night? Is it worth returning for the food?..........

Joined two friends at Cafe Benelux last week. The night was lovely, the rooftop terrace was hopping and quite a wonderful environment. We ordered wine and chatted for a bit and then ordered dinner. I ordered the fish entree served over mashed cauliflower and served with veggies. Friend ordered mussels as her entree with some fries, third friend ordered sliders along with sweet potato fries. When the food finally came it was clear that it had been waiting a while to be served. The fries were all cold, the cauliflower under my fish was refrigerator cold and actually had me reviewing the menu to see if I had misread the dish description. The mussels were pretty tasteless. I also ordered a malbec by the glass. The one that was on the menu was not available for some reason. So, I saw another one that they had by the bottle. It was listed as a 40 dollar bottle so I figured that they might open one and sell me a glass for the $9.50 that they were selling the other malbec for but they refused. Not saying that they had any obligation to sell it to me but it seems odd that they would not substitute that given the fact that four glasses of that would have given them the same profit that selling the bottle would have and I am guessing that other customers would have appreciated the substitution. In any event, wound up sending the food back to be recooked and when it arrived it was fine. But, then we ordered coffee and dessert. The coffee did not arrive for 20 minutes and the crepe finally arrived about 10 minutes later. It was placed on the table without any utensils or plates even though it was clear that three of us were sharing it.......... When we finally got the attention of our server (who was very sweet and nice, by the way), she seemed surprised to find that we were served without any way to eat it. The manager came over and apologized for the debacle and took a significant amount of money off the bill. So, they did do something to try to make it up to us. But, I am wondering whether anyone has had a positive experience with the food. My take is that it is great for drinks and the atmosphere but drink up and eat elsewhere. Thoughts?

One or two nights in town - Milwaukee / New Berlin Area

For a more casual place on the south side of downtown (but not really near New Berlin.......) there is Chez Jacques. It is right near the Allen Bradley tower. It is terrific food cooked by a French Chef. Wonderful crepes and other breakfast foods. Also open for lunch and dinner but I have only eaten breakfast there. It is really yummy!

Why no blueberries grown in Wisconsin?!!

No apologies necessary. But, if you look at the site that you sent, it actually proves my point. Lots of picking of strawberries, apples, other things, but very few, if any, blueberries.......... :-(

Food to send to a family with a new baby?

My in-laws live far from me and I wanted to send them a Thanksgiving dinner. I contacted a few personal chefs through the web who lived near them. Called them and had the chef prepare a bunch of their favorites. They loved it. Go ahead and look for personal chefs or caterers near where they live. Once you find a few call and see what they will do for you. It worked out really well for me!!

Why no blueberries grown in Wisconsin?!!

Just was talking with a friend who also loves blueberries. While the climates are similar in Michigan and Wisconsin, there really are no blueberries grown (en masse) in Wisconsin. Anyone know of where we would find some or, why there are none?

Milwaukee: some specific restaurant requests

One suggestion for breakfast would be The Knick which is a bit of a walk from the Intercontinental but not too terrible. And, it is a VERY short cab ride. Just walk east on Juneau. Nice tables outside in nice weather!

Which one?!! Solera, Sala One Nine, Boqueria, or Txikito for tapas

Just to close the loop, went to Txikito and it was lovely. They saw that I was coming from Wisconsin and made sure that I could get a reservation. The table was lovely, right near the window. The service was friendly, and the food was great! We started with a crab dip, after that , among other things we had a mushroom bruschetta type item (cannot remember the proper name.......) loved the unsmoked bacon sandwich! And had a terrific almond cake with drunken cherries for dessert. The bill for the dinner was only $95 including tip for the two of us with only wine for me. I highly recommend it!

If you are willing to go out to Brooklyn (just a short subway ride on the 4,5, or 6 train, I just ate at Frankie's Spuntino which is also owned by the same people as Prime Meats. It was WONDERFUL. The outside area is so lovely. Had a wonderful dinner topped off with the most terrific dessert of prunes and mascarpone. Would highly recommend it and it would give you a chance to see another area of NY.

Casual Dining in Providence?

If you walk along Thayer street which is right next to Brown's campus there are several places that are interesting. For interesting good pizza you can get Nice Slice. If you want a more sit down meal there are a few places along there as well. If you have a car and want something in Wayland Square which is only a mile or so from campus, Red Stripe is good and varied. Anything from a salad or burger to something more. My son swears by East side Pockets for a pickup and go type of meal. He loves the falafel!! There is also a new yogurt place along Thayer that sells it by the ounce. That would be a nice dessert.............. Finally, if you drive up to Federal Hill there are a number of Italian places that have great food. And, for dessert try Pastiche!! YUMMY treats and coffee.......
