Quality Italian

Had Scarpetta tonight and, I must say, I'm a fan. The Spaghetti & Basil is deserving of the praise. A step above QI from the night before I must say.

Question to locals..

I think we forget that Chow caters to the locals also. I am, in fact, very interested in find a good roast pork place in c-town. Thanks for the tip!

Question to locals..

This is spot on! I've been in my fair share of 'where do I get the best of xxx' amongst my nyc network (I'd venture to say most ny'ers have these conversation regularly) and rarely do katz and lugers come up, and if they do, its usually not of the positive variety.

Seeing all the enthusiasm here for said institutions and their likes, got me curious...

Question to locals..

[I also really hate it when somebody's posting profile is brought into issue and it is implied newcomers have less cred than long time posters. New palates and observers, especially in NYC, are the life of the party.]

I found the remark a little odd as well as I've been in NYC for about 8yrs and have dropped quite a few dollars exploring the fine cuisine. That said, your points are on mark and, political correctness aside, I don't think we do anyone service by regurgitating the mainstream points. I couldn't, in good conscious, recommend that someone stand in line for an hour+ at Katz only to get bullied around by an impatient staff just for the opportunity to drop $15-20 dollar for a sandwich. Perhaps if these places didn't get such an automatic audience, they'd be more inclined to work on some of the fit and finish aspect of their craft.

Question to locals..

Actually, I brought this up after a conversation at dinner tonight with some other local friends about how chowhound is digressing in terms of their (almost standard) recommendations. I still find it far superior to yelp or the likes but am puzzled by the almost cult like following to the aforementioned places. Was curious if folks were "eating their own dog food" sort of speak...

Question to locals..

Tend to agree. Unless a place has unreal food, everything you mentioned are in play. Too much competition to deal with missteps in service and atmosphere. Seems many of the recs here are a little too generic to me as someone who lives and eats in the city daily, thus my original inquiry.

Quality Italian

Forgot 2 things:

Beef Steak Tomato & Straciatella. This appetizer was actually fantastic.

QI Lemon Meringue Tart
Strawberry-Basil Sorbet. In fairness, I'm not a huge desert/sugar fan so I found this fine. The crust was especially notable.

Question to locals..

See lots of recs to places like Russ & Daughters, Katz, Lugers, EMP, etc. on Chowhound. Just curious how often locals are actually going to these places?

Quality Italian

Just had a pleasant meal at Quality Italian with some friends. The four of us decided to split the Chicken Parm Pizza (it's 2 portions that's served as a 11-12in pizza) and several appetizers & sides: Oysters, U7-Shrimp, Corn Gnudi, Aged Porterhouse Agnolotti, and Rigatoni and Meatballs. Service was impeccable as was the atmosphere. Everything was above average and nothing was outstanding to me (Porterhouse Agnolotti was pretty good). I thought the meal was very reasonably priced given that we had wine, beer, and cocktails. About 90pp with tip. I'd go back but wouldn't necessarily rush back...

"Quality Meats"?

I've only ever gotten the aged boned in rib-eye and it's been great everytime . I can't speak to any other cut there but can confidently say that the boned in rib-eye is solid.

what do you guys get there? I've stopped there a few times.. I mean the dry fruits are ok but not something amazing. also tried the bagel + salmon and I thought the bagel was a little dry.. maybe stop by for a look see but move elsewhere for brunch imo.

"Quality Meats"?

It's 2 floors. If you're in the center then it's going to be a bit noisy. Ask for something upstairs towards the front and it'll be alright. Also, dependent on when you go. Weekends will be crowded, but earlier in the week not so much.

best banh cuon

Unsure what chinese mush is... they're rice crepes usually filled with ground pork (sometimes shrimp) with garnishes (mint/cucumbers/bean sprouts) and vietnamese bologne. Also a healthy does of nuoc mam!

Looks like you're hitting all the well known places... From a locals POV.

I'd skip Russ & Daughters and Grays and just do Shopsin (alt: Boulton Watts/Jane/Clinton St Bakery) for Breakfast/Brunch.

Wasn't a fan of Grammercy or Minetta either.. Summit for drinks and then something like Arcane down the street.

For Friday, would also consider Cafe Mogador, Hunan Manor, Malai Marke. I have friends who love Xi'an but I've never been rocked by it.

Romantic Paella restaurant?

I like Soccarat on the west side (19th St). Dark and romantic but I've shared tables there so ask about private seating. Paella is fine.

resurrected: I've yet to find a good Banh Cuon place so we generally make our own. That said, are there any Banh Cuon only places in any of the Boroughs?

Anything new and exciting on the EV/LES brunch scene?

Everything I had has been good. They have a table in the back with a TV and your own metered tap!

dinner to convince a friend to love new york?

Suggest, you consider a night out.

Maybe do Rockwell Music Hall for a few tunes after work
Stop by Angel Share/Summit for a few cocktails
Have dinner at somewhere like Cafe Mogador or Arcane (down the way from Summit Bar)
And if on Friday night, go see the Doo Wop band and Elsas

reporting back on Watering Hole. Man, I really wanted to like this burger. 10oz for $10, chargrilled on a toasted bun. Great fries. Cool patrons (sat and talked sports with a guy for 30min). But alas, the meat was tasteless. arrgghhh
