Special occasion place for a gift

I'm in New York looking for a place to send as a gift for a couple that was recently married. In other words, I want them to have a great night out of dining/drinking on me.

They live in the West Hollywood vicinity but for this special night out location shouldn't deter. Nothing pretentious or stuffy in terms of dress, but rather relaxed with a focus on a high quality dining experience. We're talking mid-30's food lovers with a relaxed demeanor.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have You Seen this Queens List???

Pookipichu- Please share with us the places you actually like or would highlight. The top 100 list for those less familiar with Queens is daunting (and clearly flawed). Help us!

STEER CLEAR LIST - Worst Meal You've Had in the Last Six Months

The Dutch. Fried Oyster sliders underwhelming and lacking salt. The pork chop was tough and also under seasoned. I thought most places like this brined their chops. In any case, I recognize it was week two and they were still working on things. Service was great and after explaining my disappointment they took the chop of the bill without even asking. Nonetheless the intention was to serve me a $29 bland pork chop.

Thin Egg Noodles? Where in Chinatown?

I'm in search of good pan fried thin egg noodles in Chinatown. Essentially the pan fried version (dry) of what comes in a Hong Kong style noodle soup. Any ideas? Also what should I be asking for when ordering at a place where little english is spoken?

Ideally, I want the best plate of al dente, thin pan fried egg noodles with roast pork in Chinatown.

Will Motorino sell me some dough for home use? Like just for one/two pies?

If your oven allows it, place your stone or cast iron skillet on the actual floor of the oven. pre-heat it at the highest temp possible for a full hour. for me, this has produced some pretty tasty pies, although there is still a difference between this and a real 800+ degree pizza oven-

Reliable Knife Sharpener

Henry Westpfal & Co, 115 West 26th st is the place to go. Takes a few days but well worth it. They sharpen many knives for chefs around the city as well as shears, scissors, tweezers, etc...

Joy of Ordering in Advance/Benefits of Planning

I'm in search of the ultimate group dining experience for a bunch of friends (6-8) people in which we order a special item in advance. Sort of like Bo Ssam at Ssam Bar or a special peking duck at a chinese restaurant. I'm looking for something fun that only a group would be able to enjoy and something that requires at lest 24 hours notice for the restaurant to prepare. Any ideas?

Myth. Just go, sit down wherever you want, and enjoy. I actually had the sliders the other day and they were great. Have fun. Remember, Shopsin's is still in business to make money. They can't turn away all the customers they don't like or they wouldn't be able to pay rent. This is especially true in this challenging economic environment. The prices are on the high side for American comfort food so don't be concerned about acting the right way. They'll be happy to have you...

BBQ Meats/Butcher

I'm planning a BBQ over July 4th weekend for about 30 people. The venue is outside the city and I'll be smoking meats. I'm looking to purchase a whole brisket (Packer cut), a pork/boston butt, 6-8 racks of babyback ribs, and 6-8lbs of chicken wings. Any ideas of where I can purchase these things fairly economically? I'm not in need of prime beef given the long cooking times and specific cuts. The key here is finding the whole brisket which can be tough to locate sometimes...

BBQ Rubs & Sauces

For all the BBQ aficionados out there:

I'm lookingl for local stores that carry sauces and/or spice rubs from some of the well known Texas, Kansas City, etc...BBQ joints. I'm looking for the real award winning stuff that is usually only available at the actual restaurants or via mail-order. Any ideas or tips are appreciated.

Sick of the hassle of planning so far in advance...

I'm usually diligent about making reservations well in advance to avoid the last minute scramble to dine at some of the city's better establishments on a Friday or Saturday. However, this task (which is almost a full time job of calling, scheduling, and planning) is wearing thin. Perhaps "the process" is the result of mighty PR machines that NYC restaurants use to help them explode onto an already competitive marketplace? Maybe it's just a supply/demand imbalance of quality vs. quantity? Whatever the case may be, I need ideas for a party of 4, both Fri and Sat this weekend. Location is not an issue and I'm not looking for a super expensive meal. We have friends in town and wouldn't mind a drink at the bar, a decent scene, and some good food...So where should we go?

Cabo recs needed....please

After trolling the web and this board, there still seems to be an absence of decent information regarding dining suggestions in Cabo San Lucas/San Jose. Fine dining is not needed but good solid food is. Ambience is less relevant to us vs. food quality. Any ideas, suggestions, or tips? So far based on extensive research, Mi Cocina, El Chilar, El Matador, Nick San, Tacos Gardenias, Peacocks, and El Palcio del Taco all seem to be worth trying. I realize not every meal can be world class but we're there for a little over a week and would love to eat some good mexican food...Thanks-

Moving to Lower East Side (Clinton & Grand St)

Looking for delivery/take-out ideas of all types. I'm particularly excited about my proximity to Chinatown but can't wait to build a list of quality delivery ideas. Thanks in advance for your suggestions and thoughts. I know this is a fairly open ended posting but the more ideas the merrier! Thanks again-

Best Steak Dinner for Boyfriend's 30th Bday?

Strip House, hand's down. Great atmosphere, not the typical boring steakhouse. If he likes rib-eyes, then make sure he orders it.

Heritage/Berkshire Pork

Anyone know where I can purchase Heritage or Berkshire pork here in the city? Specifcally, I'd like to find a pork shoulder and some baby back ribs. I know Lobel's carries them but I was hoping to pay a slightly more reasonable price. Any suggestions near Chelsea/Union Square are a plus as well. Thanks in advance-

Heading down next week for and extended stay and will be BBQ'ing extensively. Does anyone have any meat/butcher suggestions? How about a quality fishmonger? I'm familiar with Wegmans and Whole Foods but perhaps someone can point me to some high quality specialty stores. Any advice is appreciated....

Palm Springs, Palm Desert, etc...reccs?

I'm heading to Palm Springs over Memorial Day weekend with another couple and will be staying at the Parker. Happy to drive a bit for a good meal as well, so Palm Springs proper is not a necessity. We're coming from San Francisco and New York City so we have plenty of fancy places to eat it at all the time in our home cities. However, we'd love some ideas on where to find some hidden gems (maybe dive Mexican places?) or anything else that may be interesting. Basically we're looking for great food of all types!. Budget not an issue, but would prefer only one or two expensive places. What's fun, funky, and delicious? We're there for 5 days so recommendations for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks are all welcome....Thanks in advance-

Any recent Black Pearl reports

There is potential here, but so far it's mediocre at best. I live nearby and have sampled a handful of items so far. It seems that the fried foods are pretty good and the lobster is decent. However, some of the fresh fish entrees and even the half chicken are very bland and under seasoned. Service definitely needs work. In fact, every time I have been there I have seen a completely different staff, both waiters and bartenders. Also, I think they need to improve the winelist a bit. Prices are very high for the wine. The list is fairly limited and could certainly be expanded to offer a much wider selection. An extensive, fun, and creative wine list (perhaps small producers?) at a better value would go along way to complete the experience here. I'm hopeful things improve as they work out the kinks but time is passing by and improvements have been slow to materialize...

Results sorted by date?

What happened to being able to search a particular board and having the option of sorting results by relevance or date? It makes no sense for results from 1999 to be placed in seemingly random order alongside posts from last week. Anyone else agree with me?
