Best FRIES in San Diego???

I like Belgian Frie.

hot dog san diego

There's a Nathan's at Westfield North County Mall.

Pizza Restaurants in San Diego

Basic has good pizza and a good salad.

Fish & Chips in San Diego

I had it a long time ago, so I don't really remember much except that it wasn't bad. It's a huge portion of haddock. The chips or "Studio Fries" are pretty unremarkable...just your standard frozen shoestrings.

NY Style Pizza in San Diego??

I've had a couple of slices of a meatball pie from there. It was at a friend's place while watching a football game, so it was a little cold and it wasn't really getting my full attention. I'd have to try it again fresh to make any real comments about it. I'd say it's pretty decent and standard for what you can get around here. There were a couple of NY transplants and they thought it was ok.

And just to add another option for those in the northern parts of SD, there's Bongiorno's (like Luigi's, started by an ex-Bronx Pizza employee), with 3 locations: Solana Beach, Miramar, and Poway.

Are there any places here that use fresh mozzarella? I know Basic does, and I ordered it once, but I guess the server didn't catch it or someone in the kitchen messed up because we got regular mozzarella.

80's SD yogurt place? (help)

Here's one I missed: Funnies Frozen Yogurt. It's on West Point Loma, near the Sports Arena and the Souplantation.

Google for the win? :p

I looked it up and it seems to get really bad reviews. Perhaps it's the same spot under a new name or with new management/ownership.

80's SD yogurt place? (help)

I looked on Google Earth and there's a place called The California Yogurt Company on Midway just south of the Sports Arena.

Yogurt World in Mira Mesa

FYI, this location is now open. It opened up March 1st. I didn't get to try it out though.

Knife sharpening in San Diego?

I know the place you're talking about. That place closed within the last 6 months--maybe around the holiday season if I remember correctly. Was that place called "The Edge"? I did some Googling and see there are other locations at North County Fair, Horton Plaza, Grossmont Center, and Plaza Camino Real. The pictures look similar to what I remember from the UTC store.

Go here for info: http://theedgeknives.com/Sharpening.htm

You also get a free basic sharpening if you print that page.

Edit: OK I did some clicking around on their website and the store in UTC was "The Edge".

SUPER BOWL quality wings in SD?

With Hooter's wings, you have a choice of breaded or "naked" without the breading/batter. I think they're sauces are a little too vinegary so they might've not been what the OP was looking for. The wings are OK, but are way overpriced for what you get. At least they don't charge extra for a serving of bleu cheese or ranch anymore--that was a real ripoff.

Pizza Paradises on Travel Channel

You can read more info about it on the Travel Channel's website. As mentioned above, these shows are regularly re-aired. At least for us on the west, it's going to be re-aired at midnight.

Also the TV schedule is on that website so browse and click around to find out when it'll be aired next: http://www.travelchannel.com/Series_TV_Schedule?seriesId=/tv-schedules/weekly.html&idLink=3c085688d5657110VgnVCM100000698b3a0a____

Ciro's Pizzeria Gaslamp San Diego

I finally got to try Bongiorno's (Poway). I went for lunch and got the familiar two slices and a soda (can) for $6. Without having tried any of the other aforementioned NY style places in a while, I'd say Bongiorno's is up there in terms of crust and overall taste.

I'm definitely going back to order a whole fresh baked pie to taste it at it's highest quality. Overall I liked it. It's close (for us in the northeast region of SD) and there's plenty of parking.

Also for whatever it's worth, Mike, the owner, worked at Bronx Pizza for 4 years and has been making pizza for more than 20 years (according to their take-out menu).

Loved Lucha Libre - San Diego

Yeah, I love their chips. I think that's what's keeping them in business. ;)

And for anyone who didn't know, they sell their chips at Iowa Meat Farms:
6041 Mission Gorge Rd
San Diego, CA 92120

Ciro's Pizzeria Gaslamp San Diego

The crust at Basic is charred and a lot thinner (wafer-like in the middle), so it's crisper and lighter than what you'll get with a typical NY style pizzeria.

The salad is tasty too. If you plan on ordering it, be aware that it easily feeds 2 and probably 3-4 (it's huge).

Ciro's Pizzeria Gaslamp San Diego

I don't think it's really worth trying. Don't get me wrong, it's pretty good but not as good as some other NY style places--namely the already mentioned Luigi's and Bronx.

As far as pizza maybe worth trying in the area, I'd recommend Basic (located at 10th & J) for the simple fact that it's different and as far as I know the only place that serves up Connecticut (New Haven) style pizza in SD. It's distinction is a very thin crust (be careful on loading up too many toppings), charred on the bottom. They offer up some unusual toppings. Menu's here: http://www.barbasic.com/eat.html

Ciro's Pizzeria Gaslamp San Diego

Yeah they sell slices.

There's also a third Bongiorno's in Poway (Poway Rd and Community Rd). I still haven't tried it yet though. My plan has been to stop by there before or after I go to the Walmart that's close by, but the timing hasn't been right--I'm either not very hungry, I'm craving something else, or it's not open (closed on Sundays). :/

Yogurt World Convoy St SD

Well I finally went and enjoyed it. Thanks!

Also, to add to the yogurt wars, there's a Red Mango at the Mission Valley mall (I didn't try it, I just walked by and peeked). And according to their website they're also opening another location in Little Italy (1827 India St.).

buttermilk pancakes in san diego

Studio Diner? I've never ordered them but I know they serve them.

Yogurt World Convoy St SD

Can anyone point me to where Yogurt World is located? I driven in the area with the mindset "If I see it I'll go, if not, maybe next time". It's always really busy in that area and I'd tried to look while driving and didn't spot anything--and it didn't help that it just looks busy with the number of signs and ads in the area.

From what I gather it's in the same center as O'Brien's. Anyway, I tried Google and that wasn't very helpful--it just marks the middle of the road. I attached a Google map image for reference. I drew a yellow question mark to mark where I think it's located. Is that right? Thanks!

Cinnamon Rolls in SD?

I did some Googling and it looks like they're back. I've only had them at Qualcomm Stadium. It seemed they had multiple locations and those have been closed, but now they have 1 location in Tierrasanta. Their website seems to be alive: http://www.homiescinnamonrolls.com/index.html

Best Hamburger in San Diego?

I've eaten there twice. They're a chain but very good--at least on par with Fuddrucker's. Their fries and onion rings are very good and they've got a huge selection of shakes and malts.

Cinnamon Rolls in SD?

I haven't tried many others, but maybe Homie's Cinnamon Rolls?

help SD visitor: good Mex/tacos by trolley? by car?

I'd also recommend Tacos El Gordo...that popped in my head since it's near the trolley stop.

Smokin' in the Park BBQ (San Diego)

I was at Viejas a month or so ago and saw a sign for the Smokin' in the Park 3rd Annual BBQ Championship. I did some Googling and there isn't much online chatter about it. Apparently you can get a "Sample Meal" for $6...whatever that is. For $6 though, it doesn't seem like you'd get to sample much.

It seems like fun though and I'd like to try some real BBQ as opposed to the normal spots in SD, and they it tout as something you'd see on Food Network. Since it's the 3rd annual, any of you know/hear anything about the past events? Portion of the sample size? Or am I just going to be walking around all smoky and hungry (and maybe broke from shopping and gambling)? :)

Here's a link: http://calendar.signonsandiego.com/?q=node/363

It's on October 20th.

Mongolian Barbeque in San Diego?

Yeah, those are Great Khan's. Other locations here: http://www.greatkhans.com/locations.htm

Looks like UTC, Horton Plaza, and North County Fair are the others.

Pizza Suggestions needed for SD - Near 15 and Poway

Nice. I'll have to try that out.

spicy food san diego

I've been to Australian Pub once and it was probably about 2.5 years ago. Does that count? :) I believe there was 6 or so tiers of hotness and we ordered 3rd from the top thinking it'd be a good balance. Wow, those wings were seriously the hottest things I've eaten. They'd just make your lips burn. I too would like to hear if anythings changed since I'd like to go back. I've always wanted to go back but usually end up going somewhere else whenever we make the drive to that area.
