Walked by today and they were open for lunch. Menu in the window had one ravioli dish (rabbit with kale au jus--whatever that means), one main (Roman style tripe) and a handful of salads.

I think I'll try to get there soon.

Not to beat too much on the expiry date drum, but that stuff is TWO YEARS OLD!.

You can buy a half liter at TJs for 5.99. It's current crop. It's good. Two year old olive oil is the opposite of good Seriously, how important is it to save a couple of bucks on a half liter of olive oil?

If you're a costco member (I'm not, but I'm told) you can buy COR olive oil @ two liters for $14. Do yourself a favor and pass on any olive oil older than last fall.

You're getting all this rah-rah for Comal, but put me down for a "don't bother." It's the hot, new East Bay spot so everyone here is beside themselves about it, but I could not have been more disappointed, by the food, by the drinks and, most especially, by the service. I was treated like Mitt Romney treats the 47%.

Very clever. I would never have thought of looking for culinary advice in the pages of post-apocalyptic genre fiction. Could be the newest foodie trend. Forget the farmer's markets and vendors who specialize in fresh, local foods. Think of the pleasures one can derive from a can of ten year old beans that was neglected in someone's basement hidey-hole without even risking an open fire that could attract marauding cannibals.

It's trivial to put pomegranate seeds in the freezer and have them available all year round. Not recommending it, mind you. My preference is to keep seasonal treats seasonal. But it's not a stretch to have them on the menu in May.

Recommended (Berkeley GO):

Beaver Creek Zin 2008, Dry Creek Valley. If your taste runs to big (14.7% alcohol) California reds, this zin is not to be missed at $6. Worth putting a few down if you're so inclined because it's still young.

Cliff Creek (guess we're up the creek at GO today) 2005 Southern Oregon Syrah. This is an incredible buy at $4. Buy all you can fit in your cellar and your pocketbook allows.

I like the Bianco del Nago from Friuli. A serious white from Graganega grapes, something not likely to be seen grown anywhere else. A treat at $5 (or maybe $6, I forget). You couldn't buy anything close for twice that price.

Finally there's a cote du rhone rose'. A bit on the pricey side for GO @ $7 but well worth it.

I'll buy all of that for something in, say, a can or a package of dried pasta. But, Butter? I'm not saying it's going to kill you or even that there's a safety issue here, but I like my butter fresh, not a year and a half old.

I love the GO, but not for old butter or old sausages or old bacon or old anything that wants to be reasonably fresh. Some cheeses are a great deal (the Italian ricotta salata and grana padano on the shelf right now for about half the going price, for example). Wines deals can be spectacular if you're a bit savvy. I've bought Italian pasta there that I'd have to pay 4 times as much for somewhere else. But, let's face it, that New Zealand butter was old when it got here and by the time it hit the Grocery Outlet it was, what? --over a year old?.

But, that's just me. Probably wrong; won't be the first time. Enjoy your stash of frozen butter. But for me, some things are not worth saving two bucks on.

The CdR Heritages Rosé is superb at the price.
The Zin port, not so much: sweet and insipid.
There's a red and a white from Montesor. The white -- Graganega -- from Fruili and the Red -- Corvino-- from the Veneto. Both quite good at, I believe, $6. Black and white labels. The white is Bianco del Nago and the red is Nero del Nago.

Didn't see a thread for May and since it now June I thought I'd start a new one although I don't have much to add.

In Oakland today there's a nice Casalnovo Prosecco at $4/bottle. Nice buy for your summer bubbly needs. I bought a case.

An Italian organic linguine (can't recall the brand name, sorry) at $1.49. This is an excellent quality pasta and a super value at the price. They had other shapes a while back, penne, a tricolor, rigatoni, but these are long gone. Lots of linguine though.

Way cheap Absolut "New Orleans" vodka. Don't know what NOLA style vodka is but it's only $8 a bottle. Didn't bother myself.

Heading to Berkeley, looking for good Ramen place

Ok. It's late on this topic, but I'll weigh in anyway.

Agreeing completely with the generally negative takes on Ryowa and Noodle Theory noted above. I've never understood why anyone would recommend Ryowa. Hardly better than the stuff you buy in a package at Safeway. Haven't been to NT in a goodly while, but I tried it a few times and was always disappointed.

Norikonoko is ok and will get you your ramen fix.

Not mentioned here is Manpuku (College nr. Ashby). The hadaka ramen is decent. Again, if you really need that ramen fix, it will do, but only if your expectations are modest.

But, for really good ramen, you've got to get out of town. And out-of-town here means a serious journey. If there's really good ramen anywhere from Richmond to Oakland, I haven't found it.

Agree to a point: One can get quite good V-N food in Oakland, arguably at least as good as anything in SF.

Even so, the tenderloin is not Geary and Mason. I want to park, walk to eat, walk to the theater and walk back to my car. If I get downtown soon after tow-away ends, I can do that pretty easily. Or, I can BART to Powell St and get it done on foot trivially. Not really looking to walk to, say, Ellis and Larkin or thereabouts and then walk back to Geary and Mason. While I don't feel intimidated or threatened by the walk, I will say it's not one of SF's more pleasant evening strolls.

Of course, if the SFProgessives(tm) are to be believed, the pending Twitter deal will gentrify the Tenderloin so thoroughly that it will be like a walk down Union Street but all the authentic Vietnamese places will morph into Betelgeuse overnight.

Fair enough, but I can get better south Asian than Lahore Karahi's fare almost anywhere else I find myself in SF or the east bay. Haven't been to Kim Thanh, sounds interesting. But, again, it's not that hard to find quite good Sino-Vietnamese food in many other neighborhoods pretty much wherever one finds one's self in the bay area.

I haven't found ramen quite as good (or at least appreciably better) than what I get at Katana-Ya without traveling considerable distance. I'm the first to admit the best of the south bay is at so much of another level that they shouldn't have the same name. Wish there was something to compare locally. But there isn't FAIK. So, since I don't get to Union Sq area that often, I'll continue to make K-Ya a regular stop and get my ramen fix when I'm there.

Is it the best ramen I've ever had? Of course not. Is it the best ramen across the street from the Geary theater and a super convenient stop before (or after, for that matter) ACT performances? Without a doubt.

This is my regular stop when going to ACT. Has been for several years. Their ramen is a treat. Sure, you can get better/more authentic/richer/thicker/whatever ramen in the south bay, but I defy anyone to find anything remotely as good in that SF neighborhood, which, as someone implied above, is pretty much a desert for decent food. Far as I've found, it's the best ramen in SF. Happy to know of something better if you want to pass it on.

Also, if anyone has suggestions for ramen in Berkeley/Oakland, I'd like to hear them. I go to Manpuku on College on occasion, but I'd be delighted to know of something better (Katana-Ya is a fine standard, thank you). And, yes, I know there's nothing as good as San Jose or Mountain View or whatever it is that you like so much down there, but I'm probably not going to drive that far for a bowl of noodles.

Too true.

Go to El Farolito (Mission and 24th). Skip the burrito, get tacos. Why do you think they call them taquerias? The only reason to get a burrito is to have that SF burrito experience. But, unless you want to fill yourself to the point that you won't want to eat again for a long time, which is what the SF burrito is all about, the tacos are what you want.

Recommend ordering three tacos: Al pastor (not everyone's favorite place for this classic, but better by an order of magnitude than anything you'll find in Boston); carnitas; and--go ahead, be adventurous, you're in the Mission--either tongue (lengua) or buche. Eat them in that order. Come back the next day and do it again; it's that good.

If the offal cuts are too much for new england sensibilities--my god, you folks invented new england clam chowder and consider it a treat--go for asada for the third one.

What does your frosting use, 2 tablespoons? Do you really think it will make a difference? Just use the CC. This is going to be a relatively minor flavor component in your cupcakes. I would defy anyone to tell the difference when all is said and done.

The alternative: Having an unopened bottle of CC still in your cupboard sitting next to a barely touched bottle of Bushmill (or whatever) for the next who knows how long.

Best "cheap" gin?

Don't know if it's the best--whatever that means--but certainly in the running for the best value: TJ's Rear Admiral Joseph. A more-or-less classic London Dry. Hard to beat at--if memory serves--$8/750ml. I'd be love to know who's making it and putting the TJ label on it, but this is what a decent Brit gin should taste like at about the right price point if you're more interested in what's in the bottle than the shape/color/decor of the bottle itself.

2 dinners/2 lunches to convince NY hounds to move to SF?

Two areas where SF excels are regional Italian and mid-price dining. Two examples are covered above: La Ciccia and Delfina Pizzeria. Also in the Mission is Farina (Ligurian) which IMO doesn't always get the respect it deserves. Moving out of the Mission, there's Perbacco (Piedmontese) and A16 (Campania). You'd be hard pressed to cover the range of Italian food this well anywhere outside of Italy.

Speaking of Range, that's one of my favorites. Excellent California-Mediterranean at a nice price point, esp by NYC standards. Again, in the Mission. And, since you're the Mission, you've got to do tacos/burritos. El Farolito is my favorite of the moment. Others swear by La Taqueria, both on Mission near 25th.

Tartine is another shouldn't-be-missed, either for breakfast or lunch (I love the broccoli rabe, sopressata pannino). Plan to spend a bit of time on line there.

Repeating the rec above for the Ferry Farmers Market as a must do.

High end? Coi. There are other choices, of course, but none that seem quite so San Francisco to me.

Then, after you decide to move west, you can start on Oakland/Berkeley in the east bay, which is equally outstanding.

bulk olive oil in berkeley/oakland ?

Sorry, I really just meant to distinguish the organic oil from the Tuscan oil. I don't think the plastic bottles are a hugely big deal except for the aesthetics of glass vs. plastic. In general, I do make an effort to avoid plastic containers but that's becoming increasingly hard to do.

However, for what it's worth, I don't think there's much of a price difference between the Tuscan and the organic and anytime I can buy real, current crop, Tuscan DOC olive oil at $10/liter, it's just not going to matter to me that it's not organic.

I don't know if it's true or not, but I've heard that Costco buys the entire output of a Tuscan olive oil coop every year for their Tuscan blend. It sells out well before the new crop arrives.
