Philly Cheesesteaks in Austin

If you ever get down to San Antonio, check out Youz Guzy on Pat Booker road, the owner worked at Gino's. Amoroso's, Tastykakes and water ice. Great cheesesteaks.

vegetarians on texas road trip...

We had some Vegans visiting us a few months ago. You'll be good at any Indian or Thai restaurant. I think there is a vegetarian rest, but I don't know the name of it.

AB No reservations

Aweful episode. Would have no interest in visiting Finland after that.

Visiting Atlanta Hound looking for options near NW San Antonio, La Cantera, RIM

It's all about the pizza at Dough for me. Home made mozzarella, basil picked fresh off a plant. Amazing oven that cooks pizzas in 90 seconds. The char on the crust is so good.
My favorite is the pork love.

Sustenio has only been open a few months, the hotel hasn't even had it's grand opening yet. It was opened by a well know chef from Dallas. The focus is on local and sustainable ingredients with a southwestern twist. I've been there 3 times, once for a 3 course dinner, then did the tasting menu with wine and went back for a meeting which was 3 courses.

We really enjoyed the tasting menu, you sit at the ceviche bar and the chef presents each dish to you, he's a really cool guy. The wine pourings were generous, they would refill if we finished before the next. That night they had all of this fish that was flown in from Hawaii, it was amazing. They also feature local produce, had wild boar on my first visit, venison on the second.

The tasting menu is $85 and the wine is $50.

They also have more casual offerings like pizza and ceviche.

There isn't much if you head west on I-10, but there are alot of places in the other direction.

Also, if you like Indian, the chef at Sustenio recommended Taste of Malabar, not far from you on DeZavala off I-10.

Sustenio at the new Elian hotel off La Cantera parkway, expensive, but excellent, beautiful room
At La Cantera mall Grimaldi's has good pizza, Perry's is a decent steakhouse. I think Kona Grill attracts a crowd your age.
There are a ton of places a little farther east on 1604 and in the Stone Oak area.
Cielito Lindo is my favorite mexican (not Tex-mex), at Stone Oak and Huebner.
Dough is one of my favorites, not too far from you at Blanco and 410, the best pizza in town hands down.
For authentic Sichuan food, Sichuan Cuisine on NW Military is not far. Amazing if you like spicy food.
I live about 10 minutes from where your staying, rarely go downtown to eat.
On the way downtown, but closer is the Pearl Brewery complex, Il Sogno and Sandbar are excellent as well as La Gloria.

San Antonio Report on a quick visit

Have you been to Sustenio yet? I had an amazing meal there when we did the tasting menu with wine pairings. Expensive, but first rate.
Not a big Auden fan.
I haven't tried Gwendolyn or Bliss yet, I usually don't care to go downtown to eat, too much traveling during the work week for me back and forth to DT and the southside.

anything interesting on north loop 1604?

Nicely said SAhomecooking. I live
I don't get the love for Paesano's either, but they sure pack them in. Large portions I guess.
Hopefully the new expansion at Dough will help with the crowds, but without getting another pizza oven, I suspect it will just take longer to get served. Good way for them to sell more wine and apps I guess.

anything interesting on north loop 1604?

There are many places to eat in that area, it's an upscale "suburb".
Not far from you is Cielito Lindo, upscale authentic Mexican (not Tex-mex), it's at Stone Oak and Huebner. There's a good Thai restaurant in the same shopping complex (Thai Chili).
India Taj Palace is across the street.
Kirby's is a good traditional steakhouse, right near the Drury.
Wildfish and Roaring Fork are both at the corner of Huebner and 1604, they both have good happy hour pricing.
Paseano's 1604 is just up the road.
Silo 1604 is also close by.
There are several good burger joints in the area: Bigz, Longhorn, 5 guys.
Dough Pizzeria isn't real far.
El Bucanero is on Blanco, just opened this location, seafood is supposed to be great.

Chopped All-Stars Finale (5/6/2012) [SPOILERS]

Yes, she didn't really do much to improve her image, did she?
Sorry to see Simon go out on the first round for forgetting the Okra chips, would have been fun to see him go against Marcus head to head.

Best Thing YOU Ever Ate, Austin

All 13 dishes we had at Uchiko. Especially the Jar-jar Duck!

SA does not have it's own board.

Tip top cafe

Tasting menu at Sustenio

The tasting menu is $85, wine pairings $50.
The hotel hasn't had it's grand opening yet. The lobby still seems deserted. The restaurant was full Saturday night, went back Thursday night for a business dinner in a private room, the restaurant wasn't nearly as busy, but still doing some business.
They are having a cooking demo/class and a tasting dinner next month when a fairly well known Thai chef that's friends with the chef will be in town, they sold out the dinner part in a few hours (21 seats, the communal table), but I think there's still space left in the class.
Really a first class operation, the sommelier is a hoot and chef Gilbert seems like a good guy.
Service is very professional. Expensive, but well worth a visit.

Tasting menu at Sustenio

Went back to Sustenio Saturday night with my wife and 21yo daughter. We had the tasting menu with wine pairings for my wife and I.
Had a great time, the service was outstanding and enjoyed talking with Chef Gilbert.
The food was fresh, tasty and beautiful to look at. The tasting menu was heavy on the seafood because they had a fresh delivery of Marlin, Swordfish and Snapper from Hawaii.
Pourings were well paired and generous.
Can't wait to go back!
Fine dining is alive and well in SA.

Authentic Mexican in San Antonio

Glad you enjoyed it. My favorites there are the Tampiquena plate, Chili Rellenos, Chilaquiles.

Authentic Mexican in San Antonio

Ceilito Lindo should be on your list.

San Antonio and Boerne trip report

Unfortunately, you didn't get any of the good BBQ around here. There's not much in SA, 2 Bros is good, but if you drive about an hour to Lockhart or Luling that's where the really good stuff is.

Need help with one week in San Antonio

Dough is excellent.
I'm not a big fan of Biga. I'd avoid the downtown area if you can, it's a bitch to park and it's mostly touristy dreck.
For a splurge dinner head down to the Pearl Brewery complex, only a 10 minute drive from your hotel. Il Sogno is amazing Italian food, expensive. They also own Sandbar in the same complex, great fresh seafood. The head chef is a former James Beard nominee.

San Antonio: Upscale Interior Mexican

I'm not familiar with the other places your recommended, but we go to Cielito Lindo often, the owners are from Mexico City and many Mexican nationals frequent there. Excellent food, not tex-mex (except for one page in the menu, ignore it).
It's in the Stone Oak area, Huebner and Stone Oak.

Looking for a "Meat and Three" around the Austin area.

If in San Antonio, the place you're looking for is Mr & Mrs G's home cooking on WW White. Great fried chicken. Sides usually include black eyed peas, collard greens, mashed potato, corn, etc.

Thoughts on these SA spots?

Of those you list, I've only been to Dough. I've been there many times, it's one of my favorite restaurants anywhere. I'd go more often if they took reservations. They have been enlarging their space recently, I don't know if the new part is open yet.

SA Lunch - Urban Taco or La Gloria?

I think Urban and La Gloria both have great food, they are just higher priced than I usually like to spend on lunch. My wife loves Urban Taco.

Austin Help: Best - Most entertaining area to stay in downtown?

I've stayed at the Hotel San Jose twice in the last several months. It's got a great vibe, a fairly quiet oasis on an otherwise busy street. Not inexpensive though. I like staying in the suites tucked in the back garden. If you want a more lively atmosphere just outside your room, the balcony suites are nice.

Austin Food and Wine Festival- worth going to?

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. If I can only get my wife and daughter in line. $750 buys a couple really great meals at Uchiko.

Austin Food and Wine Festival- worth going to?

Yes, that's what I'm afraid of. I hate crowds. It's $250pp now for the regular passes.

Austin Food and Wine Festival- worth going to?

Our daughter wants to come up for the festival next month. There's no way I'm ponying up $850pp for the VIP pass. I don't even want to bother if we're going to have to wait in long lines for everything with the regular passes. Anyone been? Is it worth it?

Thanks

Best meal in Austin with my wife suggestions please?

LA Hound coming into town; any help would be greatly appreciated.
