B'ham fried chicken- Max's Deli of Seafood & Chicken Box?

Jim & Nick's BBQ gets my vote for best fried chicken fingers, but my favorite fried chicken is from the Magic City Grill downtown.

Birmingham - Kool Korner

Those pastelitos are fantastic!

Best Po Boy in New Orleans?

I have tried many of these listed, and my new favorite is the fried pork chop po-boy at Sammy's Food Service and Deli on Elysian Fields. Succulent, peppery goodness.

Fried Chicken in the Quarter

When it's straight out of the fryer, I like Rouse's.

Looking for good places to eat *solo* in New Orleans

We just discovered this little gem on our trip down for Jazz Fest. Pretty much locals only, this restaurant gets crowded but moves fairly quickly. We tried several options from the Daily Specials as well as a few standards. I recommend the red beans and rice, the pork chop po-boy, and the fresh beet salad. Apparently, they butcher all their own meat and the roast beef came hightly recommended. We were just too full to add it on!

This cafe serves very fresh, delicious food and will happily cater to vegeterians and vegans alike. Check out their facebook page...Enjoy!

Best Vietnamese (no car)

Take the Canal streetcar to the corner of Canal and Carrollton and walk across the street to Doson's. Before you catch the streetcar back downtown, take the time to visit Angelo Brocato's right across the street for some gelato or a cannoli - they make them to order!

Dodiyos- Birmingham

George Sarris is notorious for substituting tilapia for snapper. Points to your mother for calling him on it!

Birmingham - new, or new to you?

I've tried TaiPei 101 three times to make sure. Hit and miss each time with the last visit being the deciding one that I'll continue to look elsewhere for my Asian fix. The option of brown rice is a good one, but if you aren't offered the choice they bring a floral and dry jasmine rice that is a strange and off-putting addition in a bento box. People seem to rave about the gyoza, but they are textbook frozen and deep fried while I prefer mine silky on top and crisped on the bottom or simply steamed. The tempura was so oily that it left a pool at the bottom of the dish. We asked for hot Chinese mustard and they brought out the oily manufactured stuff that comes in take out packages. I give up.

Cheap Eats New Orleans

For a cheap meal that's chock-ful of New Orleans flavor, I recommend Crabby Jacks. Really good seafood stuffed mirliton and shrimp creole for under $10 and it comes with a side dish and a salad. Some of the best po-boys, too!

I'm also a fan of Ted's Frostop on Claiborne. Tasty red beans and rice on Mondays and good fried chicken. They serve up cold rootbeer in a frosted mug, to boot. This was my highschool haunt and it holds up nearly twenty years later.

Poaching Chicken - any tips?

I have had great results by gently simmering the chicken in a covered pot for 10-15 minutes and then removing the pot from the heat and letting the chicken sit covered for an additional 45 minutes. Always tender and buttery.

Hard boiled eggs

Creamed eggs over toast - basic white sauce with a pinch of dry mustard and onion powder added - skip any nutmeg - slice eggs and stir into white sauce - serve over buttered toast.

Quick Marigny Suggestions?

Sukho Thai on Royal. Buffa's on Esplanade. Verti Mart on Royal in the Quarter. Fiorello's on Decatur in the Quarter. Parkway Bakery just off the Canal streetcar line at Jefferson Davis.

Chef Chris leaving Delachaise??

I was dying to try his food and was thwarted by the oh-so-busy and inattentive bartenders who I was told were supposed to take my order. We ended up leaving and going for Chinese. What a letdown.

Gulf Shores chow eats?

Our family has always enjoyed King Neptunes.

Moving to Atlanta - Need to find the following

Everything is really spread out here. Will she be inside the city perimeter or outside?

In any event, we have those things in spades, although a really good deli is hard to find here, and good pizza is so subjective. Breakfast, coffee, desserts, burgers, sushi and Mexican we have in abundance!

Best Oyster Poboy?

Please take a drive down Hiway 11 to Captain Humbles. For roast beef I stick with Parasols and Parkway Bakery, but I will drive a spell for the oyster po-boy at Captain Humbles.

Buy and run - best food to bring home from New Orleans

Olive salad is good to go. I brought home Hubigs pies last time, too.

Praline Battle: Loretta's vs. Southern Candy...

Blasphemer! *laughing*

I am a big fan of nuts.

Who makes your favorite Bloody Mary?

Travis at The Red Door on Carrollton takes great care to serve up an outstanding bloody mary. His efforts get my vote for best bloody mary I've ever been served in public!

Best Praline Available in French Quarter?

I really love all the candies at Southern Candymakers. The chocolate covered dried fruits are excellent, and the pralines are delicious. Not grainy and generous with pecans.

Here's a link: http://www.southerncandymakers.com/StoreFront.bok

Best Gumbo in New Orleans or La. as a whole.

I really love the gumbo at Casamento's on Magazine St. but you'd better hurry!

Veggie options downtown

Add Adolfo's to that list and it's pretty comprehensive! There is a terrific vegetarian gumbo at the Gumbo Shop on St Peter next to Jackson Square. Ask for the Gumbo Z'herbs.

pea soup

I agree. I've made what I thought was a watery pea soup, only to have it thicken to porridge consistency with a rest time, usually in the fridge (the soup...not me!).

ATL - How is Shaun's?

That's a lot of liver, even for a liver lover!

Best Service You Ever Had

Commander's Palace, New Orleans 2003

The most impressive part of our meal was when the apples were left off my salad. I alerted our server and asked about them and a look of mock horror crossed his face. He exclaimed "Madame!" and clapped his hand three times, spoke softly to another staff member and a platter of apples arrived within seconds to our table. My mother and I laughed about this for years, imitating the way the waiter said "Madame!". We wished to be always treated like our every wish and desire were there to be fulfilled when dining out. What a treat that was.

The second best was a diner in Long Island City, NY 2005. We were visiting for an event (Big Apple to Big Easy benefit for Katrina) and got back to our hotel under the 59th St bridge in the wee hours and we were starving. The desk clerk called this little diner around the corner and spoke quietly for a few minutes. Before we knew it this little red car came racing around the corner. It was the delivery guy from Central America who spoke little English but was utterly charming. He had driven over to pick us up and drive us the few short blocks to the diner because the hour was late and he was assured we were "beautiful ladies". Ha! The food was great, but the hospitality was even better. It was an experience.

Deviled Eggs in Atlanta?

Matthew's Cafeteria in Tucker serves them. Friday is fried chicken day.

Creole Vegetarian?

The Gumbo Shop on St Peter (close to Jackson Square) has Gumbo Z'herbs on a regular basis. What we had a really difficult time finding was any version of a vegetarian red beans and rice!

Bham area - Let's talk barbecue

Another vote for Full Moon. Ask for your meat sliced, inside and out, no sauce. They'll do it the way you like it, but you have to ask. Otherwise you get pork mush, which I hate. The location makes all the difference at this small chain. Avoid anything over the mountain and stick to downtown or Valley Avenue. Beans are knockout side item. Fries are also good but not to go. They steam. Eat them in house with BBQ sauce for dipping.

Looking for a Crawfish Boil on Sunday, 03/09

My friend Shaggy hosts crawfish boils in bars and backyards all over town. Give him a call and see if he can help- (504)484-4440/Shaggy's Boil, Inc. He just shut down his seafood shack so he may have the time and inclination to hook you up!
