Please critique my itinerary for 5 night trip to San Francisco (DID LOTS OF RESEARCH)

+1 on the Beach Blanket Babylon suggestion - it's great campy fun and fantastic music. We like to walk around North Beach after and do some bar-hopping for a couple of hours.

smashburger [Hicksville]

Also if you sign up on their website, you will get a BOGO coupon by email, and a free shake on your birthday!

smashburger [Hicksville]

I liked it too...there is also a chipotle bun that is very tasty and those shakes are lumpy with ice cream and sinfully delicious.

Cafe at 5600 College Ave., Oakland in late 70's

I believe you're thinking about Edible Complex - known among my friends as Ed Dibble's or Ed's Place. I spent MANY a weekend hour there back in the day...

Kitchen Nightmares Routines

I don't know if they are on the web but I saw most of them a few months ago on BBC America.

Thanks for posting that link - I also recommend watching his exit video...

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #11 - 01/18/12 (Spoilers)

Amazing indeed! This is what Top Chef is all about!

Where to get great Seekh Kabob in Hicksville area?

I've been trying to fight this craving for a week, but it just won't go away!

Any recommendations?

Levittown Area devoid of any decent dining options.

Lots of decent Indian/Pakistani food in Hicksville although not so much upscale.

Good sushi at Izumi in Bethpage, and excellent French at Sage Bistro in Bellmore.

Any foodie book gift ideas?

The Apprentice: My Life in the Kitchen by Jacques Pepin...great and inspiring. I listened to the audio book, which added to the atmosphere. Also agree with the Ruth Reichl recommendations below.

Anything good at Outback?

Also posting late, but I love their Seared Ahi Tuna appetizer. and often get the large size along with fresh steamed broccoli for a very healthy and tasty meal. I also like the Blue Cheese Pecan Chopped salad...

Hicksville, Long Island - Dinner with Mom rec's

Although not Hicksville, I'd recommend BK Sweeney's in Bethpage - just a little to the east of Hicksville. Comfortable & pub-ish with decent food.

This Sunday in Amsterdam - breakfast/brunch/lunch near(ish) Van Gogh Museum

Thanks for the suggestions, Hans

Brasserie Van Baerle looks really good to me, especially the garden if the weather is nice...

Best,
Chris

This Sunday in Amsterdam - breakfast/brunch/lunch near(ish) Van Gogh Museum

I'll be arriving at 6 am from JFK, picking up a car at Schipol, and am planning to spend the day in/near the Museumplein before heading to Heerenveen area for a few days of work.

Would appreciate suggestions of informal places relatively nearby to eat. My first visit to the Netherlands and I'm hoping to have a lazy day and an early evening before I crash. No real preferences for food type...just good taste with nothing fancy.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Fiction books with recipes?

Katherine Hall Page has a long-running mystery series featuring protagonist Faith Fairchild, who is a caterer. I always get hungry when I read her books - although I've never tried any of the recipes...

Top Chef All-Stars - Ep. #10 - 02/16/11 (Spoilers)

Wow, that's cool. I hate having the big propane container hanging around when i use it fairly infrequently. Will definitely look for these next time I'm at Target.

Thanks!

Top Chef All-Stars - Ep. #10 - 02/16/11 (Spoilers)

They may sell the propane canisters, but I'm quite sure they are sold empty and that you have to take them elsewhere to get them filled with propane.

Squishing potato chips in your sandwich...anyone else do this?

+1

Has anyone seen the Cuisinart Soup Maker & Blender? Would you buy it?

Sounds really intriguing - how does it do at chopping veggies? I've only recently started cooking a lot at home and have been chopping by hand and using an immersion stick for blending. This would be a big investment, but all the reviews seem VERY positive...

Single... still eat dinner out? Tips?

I too travel a lot for business and have done so for years. While I have a vague recollection of discomfort in the early days (when it was still a tad unusual for a young woman to be on the road alone), I do love dining alone as much as with convivial companions.

Oddly, sometimes when I dine alone closer to home I feel that I need to 'justify' taking a table to myself. It's mostly in my own head, as if dining alone while traveling is forced on me (and therefore OK) dining out in the neighborhood is more of a choice and open to questioning. Silly, I know.

The other element is that first moment with the host - "Just one?" or "How many?" when I'm clearly the only person standing in front of them. Argh - I hate that! Sometimes when I'm feeling particularly feisty, I will look around in an exaggerated way before I confirm that I am indeed a lone pathetic, tip-stealing single..

BTW, I don't go anywhere without a book, Kindle and smartphone.

The Best Thing I Ever Ate...

+1 to wanting to see the verification that DDD is pay to play.

Top Chef All-Stars - Ep. #4 - 12/22/10 (Spoilers)

I definitely will do that...which one would you recommend?

Top Chef All-Stars - Ep. #4 - 12/22/10 (Spoilers)

ghg, if you're talking about Richard's QF dish I agree wholeheartedly! I tend to like Blais in general and usually find his food interesting but that dish looked awful.Wonder what Bourdain would have said about it - "It looks like a dessicated cougar bladder..." LOL.

Top Chef All-Stars - Ep. #4 - 12/22/10 (Spoilers)

The Hale & Hearty chain in NY also makes Senegalese Peanut Soup that is my favorite. I've seen recipes for it on the web but haven't tried to make it myself because I am sure it wouldn't quite measure up!

Right Now You Can't Get Enough of...

Brussels sprouts - I got reacquainted with them at Thanksgiving and just have to have them!

Top Chef All-Stars - Ep. #2 - 12/08/10 (Spoilers)

Just 2 words - cold pizza!

Top Chef - D.C. - Ep. #10 - 08/18/10 (Spoilers)

Oh god, those look sooooo good!

Top Chef - D.C. - Ep. #10 - 08/18/10 (Spoilers)

Just because he made it first doesn't mean that Ed originated the idea. We don't know if Tiff planted the suggestion in Ed's mind in the first place...off-camera.

When I watch Top Chef, I always try to remind myself that we are only seeing a tiny bit of the interaction. Some of the comments here make me think that many people forget that fact!

Early Sunday Breakfast in East Bay?

+1 on Homemade Cafe - love the Mexican eggs with a side of guacamole.
