ISO: Newfoundland Savoury

Yes - please share which Sobeys! I know that some Sobeys out east carry it, but I've never seen it in a store outside the Atlantic provinces.

Affordable tasting or prix fix menus in Toronto

Cava, up at Yonge/St. Clair, is a tapas bar and for around $50 per person you can let them choose a variety of things for you. It's really fun, everything is surprise and since it's small plates you get quite a few.

I was there about two months ago and the food was excellent. The wine is a bit pricey, throw in a bottle, tastings for 2 with tax and tip you'll be in for $200. It's not perhaps the best deal in town, but every dish we had was excellent and for the most part really unique.

ISO: Newfoundland Savoury

Growing up with a Newfie parent, chickens and turkeys were always seasoned with savoury, an herb from Newfoundland that sort of looks like rosemary but has a completely different flavor. I've never seen it for sale outside Newfoundland/Cape Breton, but would LOVE to get my hands on some. I've tried ordering it off Amazon.com and it was terrible, full of hard stalks and hardly edible.

Has anyone any idea of where you can buy savoury in the GTA? It would be awesome if it were the Mt. Scio brand that you get in Newfoundland, but really anything would do.

Good Oysters in Toronto

Went to Starfish this week and it was really good. Started out with a dozen oysters from various regions and some affordable cava to wash it down. Excellent and fresh, and the staff are really helpful. Would definitely recommend sitting at the bar. Also had a steak and pork loin main, both were outstanding.

Day trip to Kingston

I had lunch a Chez Piggy and thought it was great. We had the burger, it was a thick, well seasoned patty cooked to medium, with aged cheddar, thick cut bacon, and a healthy slather of guacamole on a great ciabatta. Each element was really high quality, and although it was expensive (probably around $17, if I recall), it was definitely worth it. The courtyard is very cute and I would recommend it.

Walking distance from Dundas St; recs for this week?

Barberians is a great steak place on Elm St (one street north of Dundas near Bay). The food is very expensive but service and quality is very good. They also charcoal grill the steaks, can't beat that.

In fact, there are some other great places on Elm, in particular the Queen and the Beaver. This is British gastro-pub style so may not be what you're looking for since your visitors are from the UK, but still good food, nice atmosphere, and a nice selection of beers including usually a local cask.

Spadina Garden near Dundas and Bay has good Chinese food if you want atmosphere and service that is a step up from the Chinatown fare.

Sin and Redemption is a nice place, has reasonably priced food and a great selection of Belgian beer.

I also echo Lai Wah Heen, it's quite expensive but has great peiking duck.

There are also some good places on Baldwin Street, which is very close to Dundas, one block north near Beverly. It's a cute street with some solid food options.

Salad King - What the !@#$%^&*

I always find the bangkok stirfry a good option, it's bean curd noodles with all sorts of tofu and veggies mixed in.

Good poutine in Toronto?

C'est What, on Front east of Yonge, has poutine worth checking out. Real cheese curds, fresh fries, and a sprinkle of green onions. Not to mention the beer selection to wash it down with is fantastic.

Where can I buy COOKED meat / poultry in bulk?

I think St. Andrew's Chicken in Kensington sells cooked chicken as well.

recommendations for best pizza to order at Queen Margherita Pizza?

Agreed - the Giovanni is excellent. Tried a couple others but my date and I always agree that the Giovanni is tops.

CN Tower - just the view or worth the restaurant as well?

It's not so much that the food is bad it's just really overpriced for what you get. However, the restaurant does have a really cool wine cellar, and if you chat nicely with the sommelier he may bring you in a show you around. Definitely cool. I also agree that it may be worth it if you're thinking line bypass, but steer clear of the seafood.

One Night in OTTAWA... Recommendations Please!

I had a great evening at Murray St. Restaurant. We had the charcuterie and it was really fun, the server had great recommendations and it was fun to try some new things. The wine was really good as well - but the dessert really stole the show. We were there in April and sat out back on a beautiful heated patio. It's certainly on the pricey side but we had a great meal and a fun time.

Queen Margherita

I haven't been over to Libretto yet, but really enjoyed Queen Margherita. I found the crust really nice, but the toppings were so fresh and delicious it was the best pizza I've had in Toronto to date. I have to echo pescatarian here- the fiore di latte was downright amazing, and the tomato sauce was fresh and flavorful. I'd say it makes for a really great evening out.

Bar Volo...how's the food?

The food is generally good but nothing terribly special. However, the grilled calamari is the exception; it's probably one of my favorite in the city.

Ottawa restaurant recommendations

Had a great meal at Murray St Restaurant, would highly recommend and certainly go back again. The charcuterie was excellent and the server had great recommendations. Dessert was also excellent, a fancy play on smores that was absolutely lovely.

Also would toss out another idea: the mushroom pizza at The Grand. I don't think the Grand would normally be worth recommending, but the mushroom pizza is really unique. They use a mushroom puree for a sauce and drizzle with truffle oil. I always go back just for the pizza.
