How do you clean a double mesh strainer??

Hey all!

We recently bought a double mesh strainer like the one in the picture, and it's great. BUT I have not figured out a satisfactory way to clean it.

Little bits of food will get stuck btwn the two layers or stuck in the finer mesh. Oy.

Do you have one of these? How do you clean yours?

Breakfast / Dinner options in Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Holland?

Hi all!

My husband and I are driving up from New Mexico for a conference in Michigan this weekend and are looking for some of your stellar advice. We like finding those places that serve fresh ingredients and local specialties. Hoping for a medium to low price point. That said, what are your recommendations for the following?

* Breakfast in Holland

* Breakfast in Kalamazoo

* Dinner in Grand Rapids

Super excited to visit some of our favorite breweries while we're out there too!!

What do I do with this squash?

Oh man... that sounds wonderful. I never would have thought to mix it with black beans. Thanks for the tip!

What do I do with this squash?

I bought a squash from the farmer's market mainly because I was enchanted with its mysteriously knobby beauty...

The farmer saw the delicata squash I had in my hand already and said that if I liked those, I'd love galeux d'eysine. So I bought one... And now I don't know what to do with it, lol.

I haven't been able to find many (*any) recipes for galeux d'eysine specifically. Does anyone have any helpful hints as to what I might do with it? It's awfully lovely, but I kind of just want to eat it now.

What kind of tequila would you recommend for a bloody maria? I've got this recipe I reallllly want to try for the mix, but I'm not sure how to pair a tequila with it: http://www.formerchef.com/2009/12/31/...

On the hunt for good cheese in KC!

Ooh, I didn't know Shatto did cheese too! I've been enjoying their butter and milk though. I'll have to track that down.

I've read a little about Green Dirt Farm, and they sound like they've got a terrific operation. It's nice to hear their products are good too!

On the hunt for good cheese in KC!

Hey all!

My husband and I have just recently moved to Kansas City, and I'm trying to find a good supplier of either local cheese or specialty cheese.

While living in Northern Virginia we would frequent Harris Teeter, a grocery store that would often put their higher end cheese on sale occasionally, and now we're spoiled!

Thanks!

Cleaning gummy spots off non-stick skillets?

I wasn't there when it happened, so I'm not positive... However, the food wasn't really burnt onto the pan, it looks like it's more gummy grease residue than anything, you know?

Cleaning gummy spots off non-stick skillets?

Hello all,

I work for this lovely older lady who is completely enamored with her Caphalon teflon non-stick skillets. She's incredibly particular about them, doesn't stack them inside each other so they don't get scratched, and doesn't even like to use a scrubby side of a kitchen sponge to clean them.

About a week ago she accidentally left the burners on with oil and food in the skillets. Now there's a gummy residue in the pans - I'm guessing it's burned grease or something - and we can't figure out how to get the skillets clean again.

I'm more of a cast-iron girl myself and don't have a clue as to spiffy the teflon skillets back up. Any ideas?

Storing Fresh Produce: How to prevent heads of romaine from dying lonely deaths at the back of the fridge

Hey all!

My husband is a huge ChowHound and loves loves loves buying all kinds of fresh produce and coming here to figure out what to do with it. However, as a result we have bags of kale, chard, lettuces, shoots, and sprigs. In an ideal world, we would be wise in our produce usage and not push bags to the back of the fridge (which all too frequently becomes a romaine lettuce graveyard). However, this being reality, we often get ready to make a salad and pull out a half-forgotten uncared-for head of dead lettuce.

What I'm wanting to hear are some tips on storing produce. Do you prep your lettuces as soon as you get it? Do you trim your radish from their leafy tops right away? How do you store your kale and chard?

I have one friend who keeps her lettuce in a salad spinner in the fridge - that seemed like a good idea b/c the lettuce could breathe, I suppose. We usually just keep ours in the bag until we use it, and often several of the leaves have wilted by the time we go to use it.

Thanks for your help!
