Any special MA or NE foods to look for try out/buy?

How has no one mentioned split top hot dog rolls? I don't know if they have those in NJ, but I know they're pretty hard to find outside of NE.

And you can't make a proper lobster roll without one!

Menotomy Grill - Arlington (anyone been?)

I was surprised I hadn't seen this mentioned earlier. For those missing the Chez Henri Cubano, the special Cubano at MG is marketed as an "homage" (or something close to that) to the Chez Henri Cubano.

In reality it is a VERY close facsimile of the CH Cubano. Apparently a former CH chef is now working at MG and the sandwich is, in my estimation, about 90% as good as the original (I don't think the cheese is quite as good). Also, unfortunately, it's served with a simple side of fries, rather than the plantains and greens, which is, admittedly, a significant difference. But for those lamenting the loss of the CH Cubano, this is a pretty good stand in.

Best Whole Foods in Boston Area

I prefer the Woburn WF precisely because of it's small size. I don't usually do 'regular' shopping at WF. I'm usually there because I need a small number of specific items that are worth the price/special trip at WF.

For that reason, the Woburn WF is great. I can easily park, get the 5-10 things I need, and get out quickly, usually without any lines at the checkout.

Cinquecento--Much Anticipated, Very Meh

FWIW, we went for brunch a couple of weeks ago and I had the heavily black peppered Carbonara as well. It wasn't really my cup of tea either, but it would appear that's the profile they are going for with that dish.

Best Liquor (and wine) Stores in Greater Boston

Burlington Wine and Spirits in Middlesex Commons (Market Basket shopping plaza) in Burlington has an excellent craft beer selection. I can't speak for their wine selection/prices/knowledge, but the size of selection of their craft beers is one of the best in the area.

I also like that much of their selection is refrigerated. They probably have 12-15+ coolers dedicated to craft beer, in addition to significant shelf space. One downside is they don't seem to have many beers by the case.

They are also extremely friendly and willing to order things that they don't have on hand. Great addition to the area.

Chicago Style Pizza in Boston?

We've just resorted to making our own with the recipe taken from this Chowhound thread:

Take the recipe described by 'stevel6'. This gives as close a pie as I've found to what I've had in Chicago.

Freh fish lexington area

For every day, 'high turn over fish' like (salmon, tuna, cod, etc), we have found the Burlington Market Basket to be very good. They have a high enough volume that they get fish in every day and it's usually very good /very fresh (as good or better than, say Whole Foods). Occasionally I'll go in looking for a particular fish, and it might not look as good as I'd like, in which case I usually choose something else that does look good.

I won't say that it's on par of a stand alone fish monger like New Deal or Fresh Pond, particularly for less common fish choices. However, with the prices at MB, we're able to have very good fish regularly, rather than just once a week or for a special occasion.

Best Local Brews you can't get anywhere else, and Best Lobster Mac&Cheese

Flatbread Company in Davis Sq. Somerville has historically focused exclusively on MA/local beers (Jack's Abby, Clown Shoes, Wormtown, Pretty Things, Cape Ann, etc). They also have options from other New England states (Baxter, 'Gansett, Allagash?). There are probably better overall tap lists elsewhere in the city, but if the focus is purely on local brews, this would be a pretty good choice.

They don't serve Lobster Mac & Cheese (or any Mac & Cheese), but there are plenty of other restuarants in Davis Sq, pehaps someone else might be able to recommend a good LM&C in the Sq.

The Area's Worst Food Towns

C&L Frosty's is the burger place, and it's underrated IMHO. Flat top burgers/fries/ice cream/etc with picnic tables outside. Their ice cream is meh, but I'm a fan of their burgers. Sherborn also has the Sherborn Sandwich Shop which has pretty decent sandwiches, or at least it did many years ago. But you're right, that is ALL of it.

The Back Deck, Boston

Any idea if they are serving brunch yet?

I'm disappointed about the less than stellar reviews so far, but I'm still holding out hope that the 'Eggs Diablo' on their brunch menu can at least attempt to imitate the greatness that was Daddy-O's 'Huevos del Diablo'.

I've been waiting 12 years to have that dish again.

March 2012 Openings and Closings

I think this is very true. If you are looking for great beer and good food, there are plenty of places in Boston and Cambridge where you can find that, a dozen or more of them with better food and better beer than the YH.

Where I think the YH may have a niche though are on those occasions where you want to go out and watch the game (or games). I find that on weekends like this upcoming one (March Madness), if I want to go out and watch multiple games (I don't mean 1 TV above the bar), I'm stuck going to schlocky sports bars with sometimes decent beer, but always terrible food.

The list of places where you can watch playoffs, or College Football, drink craft beer and have decent food in this town is very short. The YH might be at the top of that (admittedly niche) list.

Crispy-edged pancakes near Winchester?

We moved from Belmont to Winchester a couple of years ago, and we still go back to Deluxe Town Diner in Watertown when we want good breakfast. Depending on what part of Winchester you are in, it's only about 15-20mins. I wouldn't say their pancakes have crispy edges, but they're still dang tasty.

Beer restaurants in Boston?

Again, not sure where the dividing line is between restaurant and bar, but Foundry on Elm in Davis square has a pretty great beer list. Flatbread Company, also in Davis, has an excellent selection of local (mostly Massachusetts) beers (and BOWLING!!).

Second Wegmans Plans to Open: Burlington

Ha! One of the images looks directly into my office window. Someone must have turned on my light the night they took the picture. :)

Burlington can definitely use some more decent restaurant options, hopefully with a good beer selection. Though I shudder to think what will happen to traffic with a development of that size. Holiday season 2012 is going to be a nightmare..

Source for Brisket

I have always gotten mine at Market Basket in Burlington. I've never had to order them. Each time, I've wanted and asked for whole brisket (Flat & Point), but they seem to get just the Flat from their distributor. Some times they charge me $3.99/lb since it is just the flat cut. Occasionally they will only charge me 2.99/lb which is their price for the whole brisket, which is what I asked for, even though they don't stock it.

They have always been delicious!

Native corn

Got a couple of ears of native corn in our CSA share from Warner Farm last night. Cooked it up and ate it immediately. It was fantastic!

Best (NON-Buffalo flavored) Wings in Boston?

The Tavern Wings at Warren Tavern in Charlestown.

Salty, crispy, and great with a shot of lemon. They always come out finger scorching hot from the fryer, which I love.

Chez Henri at the Bar -- Well Behaved 7 year old ok?

We have taken our 3 year old to the 'bar' at Chez Henri multiple times and have never had a problem when sitting at a bar table. The bar area of Chez Henri is a (small) relaxed bistro type atmosphere, not your typical 'bar'. If you would take your child to any restaurant that has a bar in it, this would be no different. We do always go right at 5:30pm (when they open) so that we are sure to get a table and the staff has always been extremely friendly and accommodating.

I agree with the other posters that children probably aren't allowed to sit AT the bar, so if you get there around 6-7pm when it is sure to be crowded, you are taking a chance. Though you could do worse than go around the corner to Temple Bar if Chez Henri is full.
