Scarborough Gems

Im glad you liked it! Athens Pastries has been a favorite of mine ever since I was very young, I remember going with my mom to the location on the Danforth, she'd give me the money to run in and she'd circle the block because parking was horrible there. My favorite thing to do, maybe its a habit more than anything, is to eat the pita layer by layer, eating the crispy philo before I get to the soft, cheesey, tasty interior.

Im so glad they opened the location at VP/Sheppard, and the best thing is the quality hasnt dropped at all. I still havent been to Seraphia but I still plan to, maybe Ill go today...

Krispy Kreme burger!!

Ill settle for something incredibly epic made with like 100 pounds of bacon, hell, Id take Bacon Wrapped Krispy Kreme donuts over the burger.

They should bacon wrap everything, like the waffles and ice cream, imagine that! It would be like a "Baconed Alaska". (term coined here if not already created!).

Those guys do need to come here, although I think they did an episode at Stockyards didnt they?

Krispy Kreme burger!!

truth is, nobody here can come up with their own damn idea so we steal popular things from the US, like deep fried butter, and others. I think the dudes from Epic Mealtime should create an awesome food item. IF you havent seen their stuff, watch them on Youtube, like the 140000 calorie burger!

Krispy Kreme burger!!

Id be tempted, just to try it, but Im not sure. My only worry(lol) is if the burger patty itself is homemade or some cheap frozen puck, that and how much does it cost(any more than $10 and its a bit too much lol)

Best Steak Restaurant in Toronto - Suggestions?

I thought it was pretty high end, although I admit I wasnt paying attention to the menu much at the time when I went. Its a shame it closed, it was a pretty nice place, small, intimate, nice decor, great wait staff. I dont know where The Keg falls on the Steakhouse scale, im guessing right at the bottom, but this place(non chain) was definetely 2 or 3 steps above that.

Where can I learn about different Olives?

The best thing would be just research it online, all the information is easy to find, then you can just shop for different varieties and test them out to see what they are all about.

Best Steak Restaurant in Toronto - Suggestions?

Hey, have you considered trying Barclay's, located I think in the Warden and Lawerance area. Its a really nice steakhouse, Ive been once and got the prime rib and it was awesome. Its a very small place, but Id consider it pretty classy.

Ive never heard that place mentioned on here, has anyone here tried it?

Tell me about East York

Well I was raised in EY and there are certainly some good options, most of which are probably on The Danforth. Its a great area for walking around, nice atmosphere, nice cafe's and bars with patio's, and some of the best Greek Food anywhere. Id recommend a few places based on my experience on the Danforth:

Athens Pastries: Great Tiropita/Spanakopita(cheese pita/spinach and cheese pita). and delicious Loukomades(Timbit sized fried balls of honey soaked goodness, delicious!)

Messini's: Best Authentic Gyro's in the city. Great takeout, order a Gyro to go, costs under $5, comes with real spit roasted Gyro meat(I think Chicken or Beef, maybe lamb?). the meat is tossed in a pita with lettuce, tomato, onions and tzatziki. Great lunch or late night eats, usually open til 3am or 4am on the weekends!

Ill leave other restaurants on the Danforth to others, but you basically have anything you could want up there, from fast food to more classy to whatever you might want.

Another thing Ill recommend is St Clair Ice Cream Factory. Its located just a little east of the Canadian Tire near Main St. This place is a definetely a gem in the summer, I believe they used to offer $1 a scoop for any flavor of ice cream, and they have like 30 flavors. Big servings for cheap prices and the ice cream is great!

California Sandwiches coming to Scarborough

Id guess itll be open by September at the latest, I cant imagine the inside needing much more work. I might even go as far as to say 2 weeks or less...

Dinner for two dudes near the ACC

Im not sure what you are gonna grab before the concert but after when you guys are stumbling out, you guys will probably want to grab some street meat! A nice Italian or Polish sausage loaded with toppings. Cheap and effective.

Who has the best Gyros in the Toronto!?

I agree with Davwud, if you want an authentic Gyro, you gotta go to Messini's.

Brunch Sunday before the Jays game

What kinda food do your guests like, I mean, Fort MacMurray is a very blue collar town. By that I mean they may be more comfortable with steak or burgers or pub food, nothing too fancy. Im just saying that cuz im a blue collar guy myself and If I were to go to another big city, Id love to try the best burger they have something, or if its a special occasion go to a nice steak house.

I guess brunch is a bit different, but Id imagine some kind of buffet style would be great for them. I cant think of any specific to recommend but im sure others can!

Let us know what they might be interested in!

Brunch Sunday before the Jays game

I hope you are talking about next weekend cuz they are in Baltimore this weekend...

Goody’s Diner – Finally an Ontario candidate for Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives… and it’s in Scarborough

the Chilled tall glass of coke sounds so good, you just dont see that anymore. Its just a small touch that makes a big difference, and this place seems to put the love into everything they do. I still havent been there yet, but based on everything people say on here it sounds great.

My issue is If I go, it would be after work more then likely, and since Id be alone Id be getting takeout, so im just wondering if all these great meals can be ordered as takeout? The steak sandwich sounds great(I know its not the same thing, but Real McCoys will always be my favorite) but Id love to try this. Same with their burgers.

And breakfasts.

Too bad the place is only Monday to Friday, I wouldnt typically be able to get there for breakfast but Id love to try it sometime!

Scarborough Gems

Will do, where abouts is it located?

And dont forget to get cinnamon on your loukomades!

in need of an ice cream truck for sunday!

ahh I remember this thread, I gotta ask tho, how much did the truck cost??

Scarborough Gems

dude, you dont know what you're missing, Id say(and I think many would agree) that Athens Pastries makes the best Tiropita and Spanakopita in the city, its just so good. Not to mention they have these Loukomades(kinda timbit sized honey balls, crisp and bursting with honey, absolutely delicious).

They have been on the Danforth for as long as I can remember, located near Logan, but a few years ago they opened a location on Victoria Park south of Sheppard(north of 401) in the plaza directly south of Johnnys Hamburgers(beside the popeyes chicken and TD bank).

Do yourself a favor and stop by this week, the prices are decent and the food is nice and fresh. You will love the Spanakopita and you gotta grab a dozen Loukomades too!

Ontario Corn...is it at the markets yet?

Yea Googs, it should be from the same farm, but I go to the Birchmount location myself. I actually stopped by today for another dozen!

The Burger's Priest - Queen and Coxwell

Whenever Ive taken money out there Ive felt like maybe I should buy something, so I usually do., Now I bring cash lol. That lady in the store is quite the talker too!

Ontario Corn...is it at the markets yet?

The corn guy has arrived!

I stopped by today and the truck was there, on Birchmount north of Sheppard. I had to stop by and grab a dozen, and now after downing about 4 corn, I just gotta say it was still very good!

I have had sweeter corn from these guys but this corn was very good. The corn cobs were maybe a bit on the smaller size, but the kernals were nice sized and the taste was great. Today they had a tri-color(peaches and cream type).

The prices are the same as last year, $3 for 6 corn, $5 for a dozen(I may have grabbed 13 or 14, dont tell!).

The guy selling the corn said they work Monday-Saturday, starting from around 12pm until 6pm or whenever they sell out. They should keep selling their corn until around the first frost, so Corn Season is officially here!!

Also, there are a few trucks throughout Scarborough at the following locations:

Meadowvale and Sheppard
Brimley and Ellesmere
Birchmount and Sheppard(north of Sheppard on Birchmount)
Kingston and Markham

And, the corn is grown by Sweet Ridge Farm

Best Steak Sandwich

I think people around here just think a steak like that is better with some kinda potato, mashed or baked, hell even fries.

Ontario Wild Blueberries

Aww you dont need bear spray, bears are good people! just give em their space, dont be afraid and act naturally!

Bears arent vicious animals unless you P them off, but if youre just calmly hiking you should be ok. Its only the rare psycho bears that cause problems, but thats the same with people!

Ontario Wild Blueberries

it might sound a little silly and extreme, but maybe you should plan a blueberry picking excursion, I mean, take a nice little hike, pick as much as you can find, then you get the blueberrys for your jam and a wonderful experience as well!

You just gotta find a good location, im sure someone on the interwebz can point you in the right direction!

The Burger's Priest - Queen and Coxwell

Thats why you dont go during peak hours, If you go after the dinner hour, like after 7, you wont face those problems, but not everyone can go at those times. Same with the lunch rush, I mean, you can expect lineups anywhere at those times. Just my opinion anyway, whenever I go(and its not too often) Im typically in and out in 10 minutes...

Scarborough Gems

How would you guys compare it to Mary Browns' Fried Chicken? I havent been to CNJ in years, there used to be a location at Coxwell and O'Connor and Id stop by for lunch when I was in school, but it has since closed down. I did really like the place at the time, mustve been 10 years ago, but it was good value and good food for sure.

Ontario Wild Blueberries

Well, I actually went away 2 weekends ago to a little spot off of Highway 7 East, maybe 45 minutes north of Napanee, and there were people selling Wild Blueberries at the roadside, along with fresh baked Blueberry Pies and other baked goods. I didnt stop by but they are definetely around right now, and if they are over there(maybe 1.5 hours from Peterborough) im sure you will be able to find em somewhere.

Good Asian in the Don Mills/Eglinton area

Hmm, You have Congee Queen at Don Mills and Lawerence and I think its Congee Star just a little bit north of Eglinton in the plaza with the Swiss Chalet and Harveys. If you want Canadian Chinese food, I recommend going south on Don Mills near Flemingdon Park, in the same plaza as the McDonalds and I think some grocery store, theres a place called Mulan's, and they have good cheap takeout.

Where can i find the best chicken shawarma?

I dont think they handle the big lineups that well, last time I was there I ordered my 2 chicken Shawarma but the lady put it together without me asking what i wanted on it, so I had to tell her I wanted it spicy with no onions or turnips and with some hummos, so they had to make me 2 fresh Shawarma. It was delicious when I got it though, but I didnt like the confusion of ordering.
