Helene Darroze or Marcus Wareing? [London]

Helen Darroze is amazing!!!! I love the small dish selections and have had things there that no one has ever dreamed of (fois-gras ice cream as an apetizer ... it worked!!!) and they were executed to perfection. The dishes are creative, and thoughtfully presented. No drama, great service, perfect place to taste many new things that you will never be able to recreate again. She is a genius! I would go here over Marcus anytime ...

Best and Worst Recipes You Made From a Cooking Show

Another vote for Ina Garten. Usually simple and delicious recipes, I especially like this Ginger Chicken (very few ingredients and EASY):

The worst experience has been suffering through even a few minutes of Sandra Lee ... those ridulous curtains that match her clothing are more annoying than her voice and recipes ...

What was the first thing you learned to make?

Didn't anyone have an Easy-Bake-Oven? I am old enough to know I had one of the originals, which was actually just a light bulb providing the heat (yes I took it apart after I ran out of cake mixes) ... My 1st Easy-Bake-Oven cake was memorable as it came out with what seemed to be a fried egg at the bottom ... the art of stirring wasn't real clear back then ... went on to greater dishes, but refuse to bake till this day ... I do love all the bakers in my life though ...

Your mom's weird cooking ... and other stories? (recipes encouraged)

Mom made many things on a budget to feed 6 kids ... My favorite was her "sukiyaki" with Minute rice ... When I first ordered sukiyaki at a restaurant, I sent it back thinking they gave me the wrong dish as it wasn't sliced celery, watery beef broth and a few canned bean sprouts ... Other than that anything that could be made with mushroom or tomato soup was dinner ... imagine thinking pizza was Wonder bread with tomato soup and a slice of American cheese melted on it ... better yet (and even with a more sophisticated palate) I still dream of what we called American Spaghetti ... spaghetti, tomato soup and some weird dried bright orange American Cheese powder that I understand they don't make any more ... There was always the Friday special of tuna in mushroom soup with canned peas over Minute rice .... Mom called it tuna casserole, we had many other names for it ...
