Vegetarian-ish grub for road trip through Bham

Flip's sides are fried in duck fat. I hate it too, b/c they are so good, but I haven't been back since I learned that news. Nikki's is great, and as mentioned above, it is the only meat and three that my vegetarian friends consider "safe." I would drive off the interstate to eat Bottletree's, Sunday brunch. The menu changes, but it is great for vegetarians. They also buy local produce whenever possible.

Birmingham -- Pepper Place

I have been to the Farm Stand in previous years. It is a good way to supplement your farmer's market buys during the week, though their selection isn't as large as at Pepper Place.

I started a thread about the Slow Food Fair yesterday, but it was apparently removed. I went last year when the tickets were $50, and it was well worth it. I don't know if the reduced ticket prices will affect the quantity of food, but I imagine the prices were lowered to increase turnout and most of the food/drinks is donated. Last year, I left full of food and drinks. I remember one highlight being Jim and Nicks cooking a whole hog at the farm that was delicious. Plus the booths were pretty spread out, so it didn't feel like I was waiting in line the whole time. I would definitely recommend that you check it out!

Brew Pubs in Birmingham, AL?

Yes. They also have high gravity Mondays, where you get your first two high gravity draft beers for $5 each. It is a great way to try out some of the new (to us) beers.

Hyderabadi-style restaurant in Birmingham

I had lunch there before Christmas and really enjoyed it. I can't remember specifically what we ordered, but do remember really liking everything my friend and I ordered except the eggplant. (I think it was based in some sort of very heavy beef broth.) But as said above, the naan was great. The best I have had in town.

A Brooklynite Invades 'Bama.

The Yellowhammer is in Waverly, AL, just outside Auburn on the 280 side. http://www.yellowhammerrestaurant.com/index.html

Urban Standard - Birmingham, AL

When do they serve brunch?

Urban Standard - Birmingham, AL

I went there once soon after it opened and had the Super Foods Salad. It was fresh and good for a lunch spot. I have heard that their grill cheese and pimento cheese BLT are really good. I also read recently that they are now open at night, so I am not sure if they will have the same menu at lunch and dinner. I like the atmosphere, and I have some friends that work near it who love it and go several times a week. The plastic plates, cups, and forks really bothers me, but they do recycle them, so I guess that is better than nothing.

Best of B'ham??

If you like Indian food, Silver Coin in Hoover is the best in town. There are a lot of fun brunch places in town. Cosmos in Five Points has a bloody mary bar and good food, but be willing to sit awhile. The Birmingham Weekly is a local, free paper that comes out on Thursdays. They have weekly picks of things to do including lots of listings for wine tastings and food events. There are a lot of food and wine opportunities in the summer and fall, so its a good resource to keep track of what is coming up. Finally, if you haven't been to the farmers' market at Pepper Place, check it out. It is on Saturdays from 7-12 through September.

Best of B'ham??

"Cool people" in Birmingham is very relative. What part(s) of town is closest to you? This should help with both restaurant and happy hour recommendations. Also, what are the places that you have tried that you like best so far?

Pepper Place Birmingham

If they have them, get their strawberries! They are perfect right now.

Private Party in Birmingham

Rojo has a side room it reserves for private parties. It is casual dining and a fun atmosphere, and you can order from the menu or pick items from their catering menu for buffet style.

Christmas dinner in Birmingham

This isn't somewhere I personally like to eat, but I know Ruth's Chris is open on Christmas. I imagine they have a "traditional" menu for the holidays.

Late night in Bham?

Marty's serves food very late at night. Obviously, its a bar and not a restaurant, but the sandwiches are great.

Birmingham

If you eat on the bar side of Highlands, you will be fine without a coat or tie.

Birmingham

I have a friend that stayed at the Hotel Highlands a few weeks ago, and he said it was really nice. (This is the old Pickwick Hotel). If you stayed there, you could walk to Chez Fonfon for dinner.

Birmingham, AL - Help

Yeah, if you stay in the suggested hotel, you should be fine. Everything is really close, and you could always take a cab back to your hotel if you ended up venturing a little further away.

Birmingham, AL - Help

You'll be fine downtown or you could pick one of the hotels in Southside. If you stayed at the Pickwick, you could walk to all of his restaurants. (I can't attest to the quality of the rooms, but the location would be great.) You might want to try both the restaurant and the cafe at Bottega if you want the full Stitt experience. Ocean is really good and is in the same area. If you want to grab a beer (and it isn't 100 degrees), I would suggest the Garage and/or Rojo. Both are in Southside and have really great patios. When are you planning on coming? Some of his restaurants are on vacation either right now or around labor day, and are closed on Sunday and/or Monday so plan your trip accordingly. Have fun!

Tuscaloosa Restaurant for Romantic Evening

Its been awhile, but I would suggest the Globe in Northport. It is consistently good, and the atmosphere is great.

Birmingham - Favorite "cheap" eats/dishes?

Have you tried their fried pickles? They are great.

Further Birmingham discussion - what about these places?

Cosmos is always slow. Its part of the charm. Their spinach salad is one of my favorite salads in town.
Lucy's is a nice coffee shop. Its been there forever and thankfully has been able to survive Starbucks (at least for now).
I really like New China Town. I'm veg, and their sesame tofu and vegetarian mongolian chicken are very good.
I am sure the kabob place will have a menu like Als/Purple Onion/Pyramids. Boring. I'd try George's on Green Springs in lieu of those options.
I can't speak for the burgers, but Chez Fon Fon has the best fries in town.
