Graduation Dinner in Irvine

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a graduation dinner in Irvine. I will be graduating at UCI on Friday the 14th. There will only be about 8-10 people in the dinner party. Would like something nice, but it doesn't have to be extremely fancy. Thanks in advance.

Anaheim/Yorba Linda Area

My friend needs to find a spot for a rehearsal dinner for 25. The group is all in their 20's and though I'm not sure of her budget, I know she was considering either WoodRanch or Don Jose's. Which is better? Are there any other similarly priced options in the area? A bar is a must. Thanks!

Help! Need to bring fruit to a party

I was going to make turkey ricotta meatballs, but the hostess has asked me to bring fruit! One can I bring that is innovative, yet meets the hostesses' requirements???? P.S. I live in So. Cal so that is where the fruit will be purchased. Any neat presentation or recipe ideas? Has to travel an hour to the destination.

Australian Staycation

Hello fellow 'hounders. I know it sounds lame, but I am planning a surprise Australian 'staycation' for my SO. He really would love to go to Australia, so I am planning to re-create that. What types of food should I have? Also, where can I pick up foods/ingredients that are specific to Australia? I am located in South OC. Thanks!

Pizza Hut Pasta

I recently tried the chicken alfredo and it was pretty good. Nothing special, but the corkscrew pasta was cooked perfectly, and there was lots of grilled chicken. It is really good reheated the next day.

chili's

Honestly, they are my favorite mini burgers! I have tried them from a lot of different places, but they still remain my favorite. They don't have any special toppings, and they come on the same type of buns as their regular burgers, but the meat is seasoned perfectly! Give them a try; they shouldn't disappoint.

OC Steakhouses

I heard that this weekend is the last weekend for Turner's New Zealand. May want to call ahead and check for sure if it is; the owner says that people are flying in for the last dinner of Saturday night, so it may be impossible to get in.

Meatball Sandwiches in OC

Hi all. Did a search for great meatball sandwiches in OC but most of those listed are in LA. Any recommendations for good meatball sandwiches in the OC? Would prefer south OC, but have meatballs, will travel! Thanks.

So Orange County - Butcher and Latin Market Search

There is a small Mexican market next to Hennessey's Tavern in Dana Point. The facade looks like a liquor, but when you walk towards the back, they have lots of fresh meats and ethnic goodies.

chain foods that surprised you...

I would have to say Baja Fresh. I went there this past weekend and my boyfriend had the Baja Burrito (jack cheese, pico de gallo, guacamole) with chicken. I have never seen him eat so fast in his life! The burrito looked delicious; everything was layered perfectly and there was a TON of meat. It was wrapped up nice and tight in a really fresh tortilla. I went for a plain chicken salad (dieting). Just plain; only lettuce and chicken. I was really surprised when I received the salad! It was huge with a large amount of juicy chicken chunks. The salad was really fresh and the chicken was really delicious. It was so big that I had to divide into thirds. A really fresh salad with really generous portions.

The Shamrock shake is back! It is my favorite shake; mint and chocolate, but they usually only have it in the month of March.

Admit it... There's Some Dishes at Chain Restaurants You Like

I have to say, I really enjoy the new Big Mouth Bites that Chili's puts out. They are just basic sliders, but they taste really good!

Need Awesome Chili Recipe

So I did a search here on CH and didn't really find anything. Maybe I'm a tard, so forgive me if you have read the chili recipe quest a million times. I am going to a chili cook out on Saturday and need an awesome recipe. To be honest, I don't eat chili and have never made it, but want to give it a shot. Something somewhat simple though. Also, I am open to using ground turkey. Thanks!

What's with the SPAM monopoly?

Umm, it's Spam. I don't know who else would be that eager to jump into the market. Plus, it's the name and history that makes it a tradition. It's kind of a kitsch thing.

Macaroni & Cheese Party...

Ten different types of mac & cheese?? Do tell! Mac & cheese makes me thing of chicken nuggets and veggies. It's a pretty heavy dish so I would probably go with light apps and sides. Salad and maybe some protein; mini burgers or satays.

Big Bear Recs (Jan 08)

I had great mexican food at El Jacalito in the village. Stillwells had good happy hour food and a pretty good Sunday brunch. I haven't eaten at the Old Country Inn in over a year, but I had some great pasta the last time I was there. I also ate at the Italian restaurant in the village (can't recall the name). The food was decent, but nothing special. This link may help: http://www.bigbeardining.com/bigbearr...

Blackwood American Grill - Corona

The Blackwood American Grill just opened in Corona. It is located off the Magnolia exit near the 15 freeway in a business complex. I was really surprised to see this type of restaurant in an area that is prone to Chili's and BJ's. The interior of the restaurant is very upscale and beautiful. When I visited on Thursday night, the restaurant was pretty empty, with the exception of a handful of businessmen at the bar. The restaurant has low-lighting, but not to the point where you can't see the person next to you. It gives off a very upscale yet relaxing ambiance.

We started with the crab cakes that were served with a wonderful mustard dressing. The crab cakes were nice sized and delicious. One of my companions had the Kobe beef burger which was cooked perfectly medium and very tasty. It was a very good sized burger. My other dining companion had the sake and miso chillean seabass. The fish was absolutely perfect! A really great piece of fish. The only complaint was the rice that accompianed it was a bit overcooked. I had the Blackwood salad with rotissere chicken. The salad was very good and the chicken was perfectly tender. We finished of with the banana creame pie, which is a mini version of the real thing. It was heavenly. I'm not a big dessert eater, but even I couldn't stop eating it.

The service was very attentive! The waiter was extremely kind and helpful and our drinks were always full. Definately give this place a shot if you are in the Inland Empire or passing through.

Best college-age cholesterol hangouts?

I had friends in college who always HAD to go to Del Taco near campus when drunk. They would order burritos with cheese, red sauce and sour cream. That's it. No beans, no meat. I can put down a lot of food when drunk, but I always thought that one was a bit weird.

Fake wedding cake trend?

I think it's rude to complain about something in another person's wedding. You are there to celebrate the couple, not your own dining preferences. Plus, they are paying so they should serve whatever they want.

To the OP, I understand from a baker's perspective because what you do is an art. I just think that budgets, especially in today's economy, are what become priority #1.

How do you feel about rare tuna?

This inspires me to try raw or rare tuna. Here's the thing. I don't any fish, and I many any. Not shrimp, not salmon, not even canned tuna. I really want to learn to enjoy fish since it is so healthy. Being that I am not a fish eater, is this something that may break me in the right way?

Chains opened on Xmas Day?

I was wondering if anyone knew of any chain restaurants (sit down style) that are open on Christmas Day? I expect a lot of the nicer restaurants to be closed and that's fine. Just looking for something casual. I know that TGI Fridays opens at 2pm on Christmas Day. Any others? I'm on the West Coast in So Cal.

Is it really expected that one order wine in fine restaurants?

This is a great thread! I recently took my boyfriend out for his birthday dinner. We aren't cheap, but we aren't picky with food so we usually always eat at bars or casual restaurants. I wanted to take him somewhere really nice for his birthday and we picked a great restaurant in Laguna Beach. Neither one of us really drinks wine, more of cocktail drinkers. I was horrified when we got to the restaurant and I found that I failed to do my research; beer and wine only! We both felt way to embarrassed to order beers, so we decided to order wine. I didn't want to appear inexperienced or cheap, so I just order the mid-priced wines. The wine was great and the server was helpful, but I wish I would have realized that you can't really worry too much about what the server thinks. I will keep this in mind for next time!

near the Ritz Carlton, Dana Point [Moved from California board]

I second Tabu Grill! I took my SO there for his birthday and had the most amazing dinner with some excellent wine. Very small and very intimate setting. There is a prep bar where many people were dining alone and chatting with the chefs.

What are your favorite condiments with EGGS?

My younger brother loves scrambled eggs with paprika. I have no idea where he got this. I think we happened to have a container of paprika in the back of the cupboard (I don't know for what) and he threw it on his eggs. This seems really, really odd to me.
