San Diego CLOSED Restaurants: Thread Four (2014 edition)

Ciro's in Pacific Beach closed this past weekend. The soon-to-open Iron Pig Alehouse has the same owner, so perhaps the closure is related to that.

Ciro's had a new ownership posting on the door for a while with a the business name "Crushed". I found this website:

http://barcrushed.com

No idea on the status, or whether it is even still happening, though.

Can $3M food hall rival Pike Place?

We'll see. I think the location definitely has more promise than the failed SD Public Market. The area already has a number of other places that are attracting what I would think to be a market-friendly crowd - it doesn't have to stand as a destination all by itself.

San Diego's Local-Mussel Dishes

Interesting - the place by the Hyatt? I bike past that place sometimes and ate there once - my impression was mediocre fried seafood.

Looks like Cardinal Snapper to me.

I really hope Iron Pig is good and does well - and maybe sparks something in that area. I think there is a lot of potential for more local-centric food/drink in PB inland from the tourist scene.

Some recent and upcoming places in the PB/MB area:

"The Local PB" opened in the spot that used to be Nick's. It looks like they did a really nice job with the remodel, but every time I've walked by it has had loud dance music pumping from the top floor.

"The Promiscuous Fork" opened a new location on Crown Point diagonally across from Rocky's.

"Draft" opened in the Belmont Park complex.

"Iron Pig Alehouse" (bbq and craft beer) is supposed to be opening on Garnet in the spot that was once a German deli and then a sushi place.

"Twisted Manzanita Ales" is opening a tasting room on Mission Blvd between the Duck Dive and Dirty Birds.

Anything good close to the Otay Mesa crossing @ Tijuana?

I've only been to El Mazateno one time and really enjoyed it - good food in a bustling atmosphere.

If it were me, though, I'd cross at San Ysidro instead and grab a cab out to Playas. Or a quick cab to Mercado Hidalgo.

Make sure you activate your Sentri online before you go - we forgot :-)

what does San Diego need in its dining scene?

I'd add Phuong Nha Banh Cuon to the non-pho, non bahn mi Vietnamese.

The "pour your own" place is Barrel Republic. They seem to be doing quite well, despite being just two doors down from Taproom. The main downside of Barrel Republic is that they don't serve food. They were doing food trucks out back, but stopped a while ago.

There are breweries a block north and a block south of there, albeit not right on the boardwalk.

From what I've heard, China Inn closed because increased rent made their business no longer tenable. That's happened with a number of longstanding PB spots (Zanzibar and the Tiki come to mind).

There is a fair bit of change afoot in Pacific Beach right now:

Izakaya Pacific Beach has opened in the space previously occupied by Kafe Yen. We've been once and liked it enough that we will return.

Single Fin Surf Grill now occupies the old Liars' Club (RIP) location. Haven't been there yet.

Nick's closed a while back and the building is being extensively remodeled. I've heard that the new owners are the people who run The Local.

Moondoggies is closed and has a change of ownership notice in the window - no idea who the new owners are, though.

Green Flash closed and is being quickly turned into a place called something like the Baja Beach Cafe.

China Inn closed and the space is currently for lease.

Need Good recs for college students

For beer in PB, your best bets are:

California Kebab - great outdoor patio with an ocean view, good food and beer selection (including some brewed on premises).

Tap Room - very good selection of local beers, ok food.

Barrel Republic - 40+ "pour-your-own-pay-by-the-ounce" taps, but no food.

Reading that it has been purchased by the people behind Cabo Cantina destroyed my small shred of hope that it might be replaced by something interesting.

New Mariscos truck in University Heights.

'Loca' means crazy. I don't know specifically about this truck, but other places I've had a Tostada Loca it has been piled with lots of mixed ceviche.

SD Dish of the Month - October 2013 [Curry]

Fathom is a great little spot. Note that the Loco Moco is only on their weekend brunch menu.

Loco Moco purists would probably turn their noses up at this one, but I found it quite tasty.

SD Night Market

We stopped by around 7. It was very busy and energetic, but the food offerings didn't look interesting enough to justify a long wait in line (the vendors didn't seem that different from what you would see at a typical street fair).

We ended up having dinner at Tofu House instead.

best falafel

I had a falafel taco tonight at Cali Kebab that was pretty tasty. They only do the tacos on tuesdays, but they have a falafel sandwich on the regular menu. I've had the falafel appetizer quite a few times and it is variable - ranging from ok to really good.

Recs in Playas de Tijuana

We had a great weekend down in Playas. Here is a rundown of where we ate.

Mariscos Titos. We'd been here before on a Turista Libre trip, so it made for an easy first stop when we arrived. We had a fish ceviche tostada, which was good - even though the base had some mayo in it, which I'm not a fan of. We also had a couple of large tacos - camarĂ³n enchilado and pulpo enchilado. Also good, but a bit heavy. I think we would have done better to order the simpler tacos.

Tacos Aaron. Tacos Aaron does "tacos varios" - what seems to be the Tijuana term for tacos de guisado (stew). They have two trucks in Playas - one outside the Calimax in Colonia Soler, and the other just around the corner from our hotel (Dali Suites). We at there twice. First for lunch - we had birria, pollo adobado and milanesa. All very good - particularly the birria. We went back for breakfast the next day and had some egg-based tacos - chorizo con huevo enchilado and machaca con huevo. Both fantastic.

Cocteles Vallarta. A little mariscos stand by the beach on Avenida del Pacifico. We spent several blissful hours eating seafood and watching the one-man mariscos show. We had a mixed seafood tostada that was perfect, and some very good fish and shrimp tacos. We also had an "almeja preparada" (clam prepared michelada style with lime juice, onion, cilanro, clamato, hot sauce and a hit of maggi). The best thing we ate during the trip.

Other notes. We had some really good tamales from a vendor on Avenida del Pacifico - particularly the queso y rajas. We passed Mariscos Becerra a number of times and while it was doing some bar business we never saw anyone eating there. I didn't find a Tacos Franc in Playas. There was a Tacos el Frances, which I think is affiliated, but it was far enough south that we never got there. Horno 320, a wood-fired pizza joint, seems to be the current hot spot in the beach area. We went by it on Friday night and it was completely packed. We spent a pleasant few hours having beers on the patio overlooking the beach at Mariscos Ruben's & Charlie's. We didn't eat anything since we weren't hungry, but they were putting out some nice looking cocteles.

Overall it made for an inexpensive and really easy weekend vacation. On the way back, we were at home in Pacific Beach just over an hour after we left our hotel in Playas (go SENTRI!).

Breakfast Burrito and other Recs - we'll be in PB (yes, I know...)

It is hard to argue with the view at Kono's, but I prefer the breakfast burritos at Taco Surf.

I haven't had a breakfast burrito at La Playa Taco Shop, but their huevos rancheros are good. It is a good spot for lunch as well.
