Need Good recs for college students

For beer in PB, your best bets are:

California Kebab - great outdoor patio with an ocean view, good food and beer selection (including some brewed on premises).

Tap Room - very good selection of local beers, ok food.

Barrel Republic - 40+ "pour-your-own-pay-by-the-ounce" taps, but no food.

Reading that it has been purchased by the people behind Cabo Cantina destroyed my small shred of hope that it might be replaced by something interesting.

New Mariscos truck in University Heights.

'Loca' means crazy. I don't know specifically about this truck, but other places I've had a Tostada Loca it has been piled with lots of mixed ceviche.

They were growing Cascade and Nugget - not hops that we would typically use, but the beer was fine.

We picked hops at Star B a few years ago and made a fresh hop IPA with them.

SD Dish of the Month - October 2013 [Curry]

Fathom is a great little spot. Note that the Loco Moco is only on their weekend brunch menu.

Loco Moco purists would probably turn their noses up at this one, but I found it quite tasty.

I've had three curries in the past week, but all at home.

I did have Japanese curry sauce on a "Loco Moco" at Fathom Bistro.

SD Night Market

We stopped by around 7. It was very busy and energetic, but the food offerings didn't look interesting enough to justify a long wait in line (the vendors didn't seem that different from what you would see at a typical street fair).

We ended up having dinner at Tofu House instead.

best falafel

I had a falafel taco tonight at Cali Kebab that was pretty tasty. They only do the tacos on tuesdays, but they have a falafel sandwich on the regular menu. I've had the falafel appetizer quite a few times and it is variable - ranging from ok to really good.

Recs in Playas de Tijuana

We had a great weekend down in Playas. Here is a rundown of where we ate.

Mariscos Titos. We'd been here before on a Turista Libre trip, so it made for an easy first stop when we arrived. We had a fish ceviche tostada, which was good - even though the base had some mayo in it, which I'm not a fan of. We also had a couple of large tacos - camarón enchilado and pulpo enchilado. Also good, but a bit heavy. I think we would have done better to order the simpler tacos.

Tacos Aaron. Tacos Aaron does "tacos varios" - what seems to be the Tijuana term for tacos de guisado (stew). They have two trucks in Playas - one outside the Calimax in Colonia Soler, and the other just around the corner from our hotel (Dali Suites). We at there twice. First for lunch - we had birria, pollo adobado and milanesa. All very good - particularly the birria. We went back for breakfast the next day and had some egg-based tacos - chorizo con huevo enchilado and machaca con huevo. Both fantastic.

Cocteles Vallarta. A little mariscos stand by the beach on Avenida del Pacifico. We spent several blissful hours eating seafood and watching the one-man mariscos show. We had a mixed seafood tostada that was perfect, and some very good fish and shrimp tacos. We also had an "almeja preparada" (clam prepared michelada style with lime juice, onion, cilanro, clamato, hot sauce and a hit of maggi). The best thing we ate during the trip.

Other notes. We had some really good tamales from a vendor on Avenida del Pacifico - particularly the queso y rajas. We passed Mariscos Becerra a number of times and while it was doing some bar business we never saw anyone eating there. I didn't find a Tacos Franc in Playas. There was a Tacos el Frances, which I think is affiliated, but it was far enough south that we never got there. Horno 320, a wood-fired pizza joint, seems to be the current hot spot in the beach area. We went by it on Friday night and it was completely packed. We spent a pleasant few hours having beers on the patio overlooking the beach at Mariscos Ruben's & Charlie's. We didn't eat anything since we weren't hungry, but they were putting out some nice looking cocteles.

Overall it made for an inexpensive and really easy weekend vacation. On the way back, we were at home in Pacific Beach just over an hour after we left our hotel in Playas (go SENTRI!).

Breakfast Burrito and other Recs - we'll be in PB (yes, I know...)

It is hard to argue with the view at Kono's, but I prefer the breakfast burritos at Taco Surf.

I haven't had a breakfast burrito at La Playa Taco Shop, but their huevos rancheros are good. It is a good spot for lunch as well.

I haven't had enough grass-fed burgers to have a definitive opinion about them, but I will say that Burger Lounge tastes like an average fast-food burger to me.

Thanks for the heads-up on Mariscos Bercerra - I found a couple of articles on it and it looks great!

Do you know if Kokopelli still has the stand on Ocampo, or are they just in Foodgarden now?

Recs in Playas de Tijuana

My wife and I are going to head down from San Diego to Tijuana for the weekend in a few weeks - more specifically to Playas. On this trip, we're planning on just staying in that area, so I'm looking for any info specifically on good eats in Playas.

We've been to Mariscos Titos and enjoyed it, so we'll likely go back. When we were there, I saw a Tacos Aaron truck which I will look for again. I know Tacos Kokopelli opened a spot in Playas last year, but haven't seen much information on it - I'm not even sure it is still there since they opened the spot in Foodgarden in Zona Rio.

That's pretty much the extent of my current knowledge, so if anyone has any other info I'd love to hear it. Thanks!

Do you have a favorite Farmer's Market?

Of the four (!!) weekly farmer's markets currently operating the the PB/MB area, we patronize the Saturday morning market in the Promenade parking lot.

We like it because it is close, low key and has a good a selection of produce. It isn't a "destination" market, but it serves our needs well.

HATCH CHILE ROASTING THIS WEEKEND 8/25-26 etc.

We got a crate from Bristol Farms two years ago and were really happy with them.

We've since tried more of the chiles we got from Sprouts, and they have been better. I think maybe the chiles we selected that seemed best for making rellenos may just have been less hot/good than others. Still a bit of a bummer, though.

HATCH CHILE ROASTING THIS WEEKEND 8/25-26 etc.

We bought a freshly roasted case of chiles from the Genesee Sprouts and spent this afternoon processing them.

We made chiles rellenos with them for dinner, and they had virtually no heat (we bought "hot") and very little chile flavor. I'm hoping that some of the chiles are better, but right now I'm feeling pretty disappointed.

The brand on the box we got is "Young Guns Produce".

Thanks for posting this info. I also found this: http://www.melissas.com/Melissas-Maga...

which says that they will be roasting at the Sprouts in Chula Vista this weekend. Interesting that it wasn't on the other list of Sprouts locations...
