ISO Italian candied citron, orange, lemon peel

Hello,

I just found cut citron peel at Fiesta Farms (200 Christie St., Toronto, off Christie between Dupont and Bloor), details:

Country Bake brand, 225g plastic tub for $2.89.

It does contain sodium benzoate and artificial colour, but it may work in your baking if you can't get it elsewhere.

(I had been on my way to Kensington Market, where another 'Hound had mentioned a dried fruits/nuts place on Baldwin, a few doors west of 190 - north side - which is supposed to carry the citron in bins - you could try there as well.)

Good luck!

Where to buy yellow zucchini in Toronto in April?

Thanks, Kagemusha and pearl3!

I was able to locate them at Highland Farms (Kennedy/Ellesmere in Scarborough) - Mexican and a little pricier than the green zukes, but worked perfectly in my dinner party marinated zuke salad this past weekend!

Cheers,

Sue

Where to buy yellow zucchini in Toronto in April?

Hello,

Does anyone know where fresh yellow zucchini (preferably local or heirloom-type) can be got in Toronto these days, particularly in the Scarborough/east end/north Toronto areas?

Where to buy Condorelli-brand Italian "Latte di Mandorla" (almond milk beverage)?

Hi everyone,

Just reporting that I recently discovered Condorelli Almond Milk at Lady York Foods (2939 Dufferin St., North York, ON) @ $4.99/litre. They also carry another Italian brand, ? Dolcon, but Condorelli is the best!!
(And an intriguing cocktail tip from the Italian radio host who was broadcasting there that day - almond milk with mint liqueur; although the LCBO seems to have discontinued selling this type of liqueur.)

Robinson's Lemon Barley water - where to buy in Toronto?

Amazing, bangers and mash - you are definitely onto something - I can walk there! Thank you!!

Thanks, Spelunk. This, along with the other hounds' advice/locations, could be the makings of a Robinsons "Quest for Lemon Barley Water" road trip! Cheers, everyone!

Robinson's Lemon Barley water - where to buy in Toronto?

Thanks, Marie! I've driven by the Choc. Box many times - will now have a good reason to stop in; the location is handy too.

Robinson's Lemon Barley water - where to buy in Toronto?

Thanks, katdog; I tried phoning but no answer as yet - perhaps they're closed on Mondays. Will try them again.

Robinson's Lemon Barley water - where to buy in Toronto?

Thanks, 001mum! I checked the Scottish Shop and they carry it but they're also out of stock till the end of the week - must be a popular item!

Robinson's Lemon Barley water - where to buy in Toronto?

Thanks, 001mum! It's a bit far to drive there, but shipping might be possible - I'll ask my Mum (who wants it).

Robinson's Lemon Barley water - where to buy in Toronto?

Hi all,

Does anyone know who else in Toronto carries the above product, besides Mrs. Bridges' British Bakery at Eglinton Square? Mrs. Bridges' is out of stock at the moment, and doesn't always have it in stock for that matter.

Thank you!

Pop-up garden centres in Toronto

I second the motion on Fiesta Farms! Great selection of plants, and amazing variety of pots/containers/gardening accessories as well. A family friend also mentioned that they have one of the largest selections of organic herbs/veggies in the city.

On a related pop-up garden centre note, does anyone know anything about Garden Court Nurseries at the corner of Bayview and Davisville (mid-town)? Driving by this weekend, I noticed it was all shut and a number of "SOLD" signs are on the wooden fencing that surrounds the centre. They had been there since 1953; anyone know if they have retired or maybe moved somewhere else?

Almond Milk

Thanks, liverwurst; I second your suggestion. I've just tried it this week (was on sale at Highland Farms for $1.99 last week) - great for drinking and on cereal too!

Almond Milk

Hello,

If you can track down some Condorelli-brand Latte di Mandorla (Italian for "almond milk"), you'll be in almond milk heaven! Another 'hound says it is available at the Cheese Boutique on Ripley in Toronto (South of Bloor West Village I think).

Where to buy Condorelli-brand Italian "Latte di Mandorla" (almond milk beverage)?

You're right, jules, it's not really a milk substitute like local almond, rice, soy etc. milk would be.

The ingredients:
- water
- sugar
- selected almonds (11%)
- emulsifier: sucrose esters of fatty acids
- anti-oxidant: L-ascorbic acid
- flavourings

Just a nice beverage to enjoy as a special treat!

Where to buy Condorelli-brand Italian "Latte di Mandorla" (almond milk beverage)?

It's smoother, creamier and overall has a more delicious and authentic almond flavour than the ones here, wouldn't you say, Dewster? Do try it!

Thanks, Dewster! Mmm - will check it out.

Waterbridge Belgian chocolate - shelf life?

Thanks, Ruth and Babette, for your concern. The choc. in question is easily obtainable. I had planned to make a recipe (choc. truffles) using some older, "dateless" choc. from my cupboard, namely a large, unopened bar (it's not that nice as "eating" choc. and so has remained quietly in cupboard for some time) and was just wondering if it would still be ok to use...

Have a great day :-)

Waterbridge Belgian chocolate - shelf life?

Thanks, babette! Admittedly, it is hard not to buy more chocolate than one can eat...sigh...

Waterbridge Belgian chocolate - shelf life?

Hello, chocolate lovers,

Anyone know about how long the above chocolate (I'm thinking of the big 400g bars) lasts, unopened - or even opened but well wrapped - in a dark cupboard? The packages don't have an expiry date.

Thanks!

Arz Fine Foods & Bakery

Hello, just wanted to mention that when I was in there a couple of years ago, there were some ladies in the dessert section who had driven all the way from London, Ontario to get some Arz baklava, saying it was the best they'd ever had! I think it's pretty good too.

Toronto’s Best Butter Tarts Aren’t in Toronto

Thanks, hungryabbey, for providing the MacMillans link! The tarts are just $4.95/half dozen; also look for their "homegrown" honey at $9.95/kilo and honeycomb pieces for $5.95 (I just dug out a recent receipt). Lots of maple syrup and preserves too. Fill up that gas tank and let's go! :-)

Toronto’s Best Butter Tarts Aren’t in Toronto

Hello, butter tart lovers; is there room for more?

If you don't mind driving into Durham Region, try MacMillan Orchards Ltd. in Ajax, at 733 Kingston Road East (on the south side, just west of Lakeridge Road). Delicious, square-shaped butter tarts by the half-dozen...plain, with raisins or with pecans. Mmm - worth the drive!

Casa Di Giorgio Ristorante (Mount Pleasant/Davisville) - closed or still under reno?

Thanks, Googs and torontofoodiegirl!

I surfed a bit and found a recent review of the Danforth loc. that mentions Nikki, who used to be a hostess at the Mt. Pleasant loc.:

http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/10/133904...

If, as googs says, the Danforth is now a bakery, maybe Nikki is at Queen St. now (if it is still open)?

In any case - I concur. It was a great place with reliable quality and superb service, and was always our go-to for birthdays and close friends' get-togethers...

Good restaurants in Scarborough.

Thanks, pakmode! I wasn't able to go for the group deal myself, but perhaps others were...

Cheers and bon appetit!

Casa Di Giorgio Ristorante (Mount Pleasant/Davisville) - closed or still under reno?

Thank you, bogie and torontofoodiegirl! I saw the note too; just wondered if anyone had more specific info. If it has been for sale then that's not a good sign, is it?

Casa Di Giorgio Ristorante (Mount Pleasant/Davisville) - closed or still under reno?

Hi, Uptown Chowhounders,

Does anyone know if the Casa Di Giorgio at 517 Mount Pleasant Road is still renovating or has closed altogether?

Ta!

Good restaurants in Scarborough.

Hi Kweenshaker,

Do try Mandalay Restaurant (Markham/Lawrence area):

http://mandalayrestaurant.ca/

It may well be the only casual, yet elegant dining option in Scarborough. Friendly, unobtrusive service, a warm atmosphere and medium-priced selections of Southeast Asian fusion dishes should please your palate - bon appetit!

BLOOD ORANGES...still around??

Thanks for the lower price advice, 02putt! I'm actually not fond of the veggies you also mentioned, but the oranges price sure can't be "beet"!! :-D
