Midtown cocktail bars?

Hi, I'm visiting NY for the first time with my wife next week. We have a lengthy list of cocktail bars to hit, but none of them are in midtown where we're staying (54th and Broadway). I found some ideas from old threads, but several of the places have closed since those topics were posted.

Any suggestions? I am really into the classic cocktail revival and we also love tiki drinks.

Thanks!

By the way, how is Calvados drunk on its own?

Inexpensive Calvados suggestions?

Actually, I have had Applejack in the past, but I currently use Laird's Bonded in recipes calling for it.

Inexpensive Calvados suggestions?

Hi, I'm looking for a fairly inexpensive bottle of Calvados that will primarily be used for mixing cocktails (just want something versatile). I have a list of several brands that I can find for $40 or less. I was hoping to get some recommendations. Thanks!

Daron Fine Calvados
Roger Groult Reserve Calvados
Chauffe Coeur VSOP Calvados

Are any of these cachacas worth buying?

Fair enough, thanks for the info.

Are any of these cachacas worth buying?

So I bought a bottle of Agua Luca a while back and I don't really care for it. Too earthy and almost tequila-like for me. Luckily, my wife likes it in caipirinhas, so it will be gone soon. We don't have a big selection in Michigan, but Binny's in Chicago has a few to choose from and we have relatives there who can pick some up. So, what would you suggest from this list for caipirinhas? Thanks for any advice.

Rio D Original Cachaca, Cachaca 51, Cabana, Ypioca Gold, Leblon, Ypioca Crystal, Ypioca Toucano Rum

First bottle of cachaca--disappointed

I picked up a bottle of Agua Luca--cool bottle. Opened it up and was disappointed to smell a faint resemblance to tequila, which I do not like. Sipped a little and also was reminded of tequila. I made up a caipirinha with limes, superfine sugar, and ice. It was okay, but not nearly as good as I was expecting.

Am I crazy to be reminded of tequila? It certainly wasn't like rum, which is what I was expecting. It's always disappointing to buy a fifth and liquor and then not really like it. Especially when it's something most people haven't heard of and probably won't want to try. I'd really like to try other cachacas--too bad I can't find the airplane bottles of it.

Best Ginger Beer for a Dark and Stormy?

D&S's are just about my favorite cocktail right now. I've only tried two ginger beers. The first was Reed's Extra Ginger. I found it way too strong, and totally undrinkable. So did my wife. Then I hunted down some Barritt's and loved it. No need to try anything else, the Barritt's is awesome. Of course, I used Gosling's Black Seal (80 proof) rum. I tried the overproof 151 and it is just not the same at all.

What should I do with this Dubonnet Rouge?

That's not a bad idea. I love a good Manhattan--will try it out.

What should I do with this Dubonnet Rouge?

So after reading Eric Felten's "How's Your Drink," I decided to pick up a bottle of Dubonnet this past weekend. I made two cocktails, the Dubonnet Cocktail and Dandy Cocktail.

Dandy Cocktail
Ingredients:
1½ oz rye whiskey or bourbon
1½ oz Dubonnet (red)
½ oz Cointreau
1 dash Angostura bitters
Lemon and orange peel
Directions:
Shake with ice and strain into a cocktail glass.

The Dandy wasn't bad, but it definitely isn't going into my regular rotation!

Dubonnet Cocktail
Ingredients:
1½ gin
1½ oz Dubonnet (red)
Dash of bitters (optional)
Directions:
Shake with ice and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with lemon peel. Or build drink on the rocks in old fashioned glass.

This just tasted awful. I like gin in a lot of cocktails, but I don't want it to predominate.

My wife and I also had some Dubonnet in aperitif glasses, and I really like it. I could definitely drink it that way, but wondered if there were any other "classic" cocktails requiring Dubonnet. Thanks!

What to do with Gosling's 151 Rum?

That's too bad. I've just discovered two wonderful ginger-y drinks the Pimm's Cup (I make them with ginger ale) and now the Dark and Stormy.

What to do with Gosling's 151 Rum?

Well, I couldn't wait. I made up an authentic Dark and Stormy tonight and it is excellent! The Barritt's Ginger Beer is understated compared to the Reed's, which is a good thing. Excellent drink that I'll be partaking in a lot this summer. :)

What to do with Gosling's 151 Rum?

I actually called the Barritt's distributor in Michigan and found that it's sold at Canopy Bottle and Gourmet in Brighton, MI, not too far from me. I went in yesterday and grabbed a six pack of the cans. Also grabbed a bottle of the Gosling's Black Seal 80 proof! Might as well try Dark and Stormys this weekend the right way! I'm actually glad I went through all this, because my new liquor shop has a great selection and isn't very far from me.

Still don't know what to do with the 151, though. :)

What to do with Gosling's 151 Rum?

Well, my Dark and Stormys turned out to be a disaster. I searched high and low for Barritt's Ginger Beer, but had to settle for some Reed's Ginger Beer. I tired that by itself and was not fond of the taste at all. Added 2 oz of the Gosling's 151 to a highball with ice and filled up with the ginger beer. Didn't like it at all. I think the primary culprit is the ginger beer. Have to see if I can find the Barritt's before I try again.

What to do with Gosling's 151 Rum?

Nope, Michigan prohibits returning alcoholic beverages, so I'm stuck.

What to do with Gosling's 151 Rum?

I was under the impression that Gosling's Black Seal Rum was hard to come by, so I grabbed a bottle in a local shop when I saw it today. I want to make some Dark and Stormys. I didn't realize the Black Seal came in three different proofs (80, 140, and 151). I got the 151, and it turns out I wanted the 80. So can I just halve the amount called for in a Dark and Stormy, or will that not be the same effect? Not real sure what to do with this overproof rum. Thanks for any advice.

What have been your best and worst liquor purchases?

Best: Campari, bought about a month and a half ago. It got me out of my rut of G&Ts and single malt Scotch. A Negroni is my current favorite cocktail.

Worst: E&J XO Brandy. My first bottle of brandy. I didn't like it straight and don't like it in a sidecar, either. The only thing I can do with it is mix it with Kahlua and milk to make a White Russian variation. Can't taste the brandy at all that way.

I'm not sure if I just don't like brandy, or what. I'm gonna try Cognac next and hope I like it better.

Is there a GREAT Bloody Mary Mix ???

I'm sure it's not the best, but I like Mr. & Mrs. T's regular bloody mary mix. I have bloody marys rarely and often had to throw the mix out when it sat for too long. Mr. & Mrs. T now sells their mix in 12 oz cans, which are convenient when the mood strikes.

a classic man's cocktail?

This thread is awesome, some great ideas for cocktails I've never heard of.

Here is my list:
Glenlivet or other single malt Scotch and water on the rocks
Negroni
Manhattan (I usually drink these on the rocks, though)
Original daiquiri
Gin & Tonic
Classic whiskey sour:
2 oz bourbon or rye whiskey
¾ oz oz fresh-squeezed lemon juice
1 tsp superfine sugar
Serve on the rocks

I also really enjoy a Tom Collins in the summer. Not sure how manly that is, maybe more gentlemanly.
