Trader Joe's YAY/MEH/NAY Thread - August 2015

YAY/MEH: Brownie Brittle. Okay, I never liked the original, but this is gf.. so I decided to make it my treat of the week. Dunked in coffee it gets softer--which makes it a YAY. Plus 3 pieces=100 calories.. so that's about 33 calories per piece which isn't bad if you stick to one. However, I doubt I'd buy it again.. especially because I took them out and counted, and while the bag says five servings, there were only four in my bag which makes the price per piece pretty steep. Regardless, it is probably still easier to buy this whenever you need your brownie fix than to buy the two-pack of gf brownies because those (after 8 seconds in the microwave) are chocolate-death in a MEGA tasty (albeit high-calorie) way.

Finally someone agrees that they are NOT gummy at all--just hardened sugar. Enjoy your refund!

Yes, I agree that it is unexpected that it is gluten free because I think the original brownie brittle has gluten. .. Regardless, I am just going to pretend that TJ's has gluten so that I don't buy it--it seems like everyone likes it.

Earthquake Kit Seattle

Ugh, I just moved to Seattle. I didn't even know to build one of these, but I guess I will be stockpiling water, tuna, and vitamins soon. I had/have a Red Cross Emergency Preparedness Backpack with MRE's and packets of water and first-aid supplies and vitamins at my parents' house. Perhaps it is worth it to have them ship it to me?

Alright I am adding to my guesses--I think they will also have more "barks" this year besides their usual peppermint bark.

Weight Watcher's Foodies - The Heart of the Summer Edition! July & August 2015

Alright, I can somewhat chew now. Lately these tips/strategies have been working for me:
1. Workout of any type each day--because after I workout I don't feel like putting junk into my body
2. Be very mindful and deliberate while preparing meals. If I take longer and put more effort into prep then I appreciate the food more.
3. Buy extra "snacks"--and by snacks, I mean a variety of vegetables and fruits. I didn't miss any sweets or processed food because I kept a variety of veg/fruits in my fridge (pepper slices, root vegetables, mushrooms, watermelon, blueberries, etc.).
4. After-meal. If you think you're still hungry after your lunch or dinner then make two hard boiled eggs... I have a Dash egg cooker that is very fast but after they cook, I always place them in cold water in the fridge.. which means that takes about 20-30 minutes to become ideal for taking off the shells. Anyway, usually by the time the eggs are chilled in the fridge, then I realized that I am not even hungry and don't want to eat them. Which means--BONUS--my breakfast is made for the next day.

Where are the WATERMELONS?!!!?!?

(BUT I NEED IT!!!!!!) I acknowledge that I am dependent on watermelon.

Where are the WATERMELONS?!!!?!?

Maybe the reason why there are none is because I ate them all. Not really. But last week or so I was going through one every day or every two days by myself.. that being said that would only amount to ~7 melons max.

Maybe it is good that there is a shortage. I might burst with water.

What is your perfect breakfast?

I'd have to say challah french toast with maple syrup. NO, THAT IS WRONG: a cinnamon bun--a really soft and fluffy one so that way after you've consumed it you don't feel terribly full. Also a bottomless cup of coffee.

Does this look like a paella?

I have not been to Spain for probably thirteen years.. but NO that does not look like paella. Even Americanized paella at Tapas Places usually looks much different than that.

YAY-Heavenly Marzano Tomatoes--To me, these taste great. They are kind of crisp when you bite them and a great shape. It's hard to believe there are 22 (according to the servings/serving-size in the bag) in there, but I could definitely see them becoming a regular snack because they are small but hearty.

Where are the WATERMELONS?!!!?!?

Jealous, PharmaChick. I just snagged one at TJ's, but they also only had four. I live out in the western suburbs.. so I don't know why they aren't making it out here.

Where are the WATERMELONS?!!!?!?

Where are the watermelons? Is this just happening in the midwest or are other people experiencing ZERO whole watermelons at the store? I love watermelon, and it is 90+ degrees.. so I really want some.. but I have gone to three stores, gone to other nearby suburbs.. and I cannot find any watermelon.

Discontinued at Trader Joe's 2015

I have seen it in the Midwest and west coast.. I've looked at it, made longing eyes, and walked away. IT BETTER GO NOWHERE though because I want it on my birthday. Can you not find it?

AGREED--it tastes like G.H. Cretors from Sams' or Costco, although the one at Costco is way too giant for one person. The Trader Joe size is better. Regardless, the taste is MUCH MUCH better than Oke-doke junk.

I promise: it is good. I normally don't even like cheese very much. Plus it is much cheeper than Garrett's Chicago.. some people think that it is Garrett's.. I don't think it tastes the same, but it is still fantastic.

It probably won't happen because it would be too much of a mess, but a TJ's bulk section would be grand. I think though that most of the popular bulk items they try to already carry.. so I guess that they probably don't need it.

Some WHF have house-made versions of those. And you can buy it in large pieces or small pieces by the pound. Keep your eye on the produce section because usually in the fall I would see them randomly start to appear in a pile.

Try the Chicago Mix popcorn.. if you happen to also like cheddar popcorn. And don't miss the "kettle-popped quinoa flax popcorn chips" whatever the name is (in the black bag) or the Herb & dill popcorn. I actually think TJoe's does popcorn pretty well.
What a great dog!

Have you tried swirling the fig butter into your yogurt? I think that counts as a dessert for me--it's just excellent. (Or just eating the fig butter out of the jar works...)

Be careful--I would check them before you bite into them... I bought them for a good long time and then one time bite into one: entirely not cooked, entirely slimy pink raw in the middle. ...Never bought them again (and after being a vegan for years... I went right back to being a vegetarian).

So for the protection of your stomach and husband--just be careful.

Paris in the HEAT!! AC in the restaurants???

Seriously--go to Mariage Freres for tea/meal if you get hot and exhausted. It was one of my best meals of the trip, and the tea is so much better than tea in the US. Moreover the waiters are used to serving tea... so if you take a long time than they won't think anything of it.

Paris in the HEAT!! AC in the restaurants???

Most that I visited last year about this time seemed very cool. Also I believe Printemps, Galeries Lafeyette, and BHV were well air-conditioned. .. So worse comes to worse, go shopping. I would say also that down in the Catacombs .. it was very cold (granted I was in line for four hours).

-Powdered Peanut Butter--TJ's version of PB2
-Cookie Butter Joe Joe's--Oreo-type cookie with cookie butter between the cookies
-Cookie Butter Bread pudding--I see a lot of people buying the new caramel bread pudding, so I think they will try to make more versions of this
-More fresh pressed juices
-Cashew milk ice cream--I think they will rip on the brand that just came out with cashew (non-dairy) ice cream
-Individually wrapped Tummy Gummies
-Maybe more flavors of gelato

What regular or seasonal products do you think TJ's will introduce next?--This is not what you 'wish' they'd introduce.. just things that you actually think they will release.

Your favorite junk food or guilty pleasure?

Pretty much only ice cream and gelato right now, and I even had a milkshake recently. I had oral surgery a few weeks ago, and now I just had more dental work this week.. and two more appointments next week... so I would freakin love some popcorn right now--crazy caramel+cheddar corn or even better: kettlecorn. Also I can't have gluten anymore, but I would love a regular Kitkat--Glutino biscuit things don't compare. Although I will say, I love the new Walker's biscuits gf cookies. Freakin butter-bombs, but so good. --But they require chewing, so I'd totally go for a milkshake instead. Good thing I don't want to actually travel the distance to get one.

Also I find it hard to find gf fries, so if/when I can get them, I love'em. I have a new appreciation for fries after not having them for months.
