Restaurant reviews for mid-March weekend in Paris

I dined at Comme Chai Toi and also really enjoyed the food, the unpretentious atmosphere and the excellent customer service. Out of all the restaurants and establishments in Paris, I had out-of-this-world customer service at Comme Chai Toi.

What foods do you find disgusting?

I absolutely hate bananas.
Meat grosses me out.
Eggs yolks are nasty (unless I am baking with them.. then I can just not think about them being yolks).
Anything DRY or bready (unless it is soft).
Pasta just is not for me.
Indian spices make me vomit--I have no control over this gut-reaction--I just instantly feel sick.
Cheese and milk and most dairy.. although I think that's due to health-related issues.

Really though, bananas are the absolute worst.

Reserving Vegetarian/vegan meal for flight?

They were two different options for my carrier--regardless, I will definitely bring high-protein snacks.

Reserving Vegetarian/vegan meal for flight?

I appreciate the info about the Indian Veg meals. For some reason the smell of Indian spices makes me nauseated.. so I went for the Asian Veg. I will report back how it tastes.

Bookmarked: Gooey Butter Brownies.
I have never used the site that this is on... and I don't have any butter or a 'mix,' but I will definitely make these in late July..

About Paris, France; Regarding sites like Yelp, Trip Advisor, etc.?

I agree with you that the photos can be helpful. I sometimes like to "check" the photos from TA with the restaurant's Facebook page (if they have one, or gallery on their website) to see if there is a difference between the actual and the ideal.

About Paris, France; Regarding sites like Yelp, Trip Advisor, etc.?

I don't use TA for the restaurant reviews.. except maybe to see where to avoid. Meaning: if tourists have it on their top list, even as another tourist, I just don't want to go because I will be surrounded. (Unless it is highly, highly recommended by CH.)
Or (no offense to children) if it seems quite common for families, then I also want to avoid it.

I trust CH more. Plus JT's website, Parisbymouth, and Lebovitz's website. Talbott, I actually was reading your reviews/blog long before I realized you were on CH. Good show!

Famous Regional Food you find embarrassing or disgusting?

On occasion they are fine--in particular if they are made of sweet potatoes, but I don't really ever 'want' them.

Regardless, if I am at someone's house or in a social-setting and that is what is served, I always eat what comes "on the table." (Except meat as a whole.)

Famous Regional Food you find embarrassing or disgusting?

I doubt it--I just googled 'Tarte,' and it looks like it is sitting on a crusty-thing. I don't like anything crusty or bready or dry.

Smoked salmon. I am pretty sure I could eat this every day and never get tired of it.

No pie. Especially not pie crust. I can make a decent pie and even a decent crust, but I do not possess a taste ever for pie.

Famous Regional Food you find embarrassing or disgusting?

"American" food. Sorry that probably is a large region (called a nation).. but I have never liked burgers, hot-dogs, anything fried, ... AND

PIE. YUCK.

Supernatural brownies were my top choice. One summer I went through over a dozen brownie recipes and even had a taste-off. My friends wanted to kill me because I made them try to pick a winner.

The Supernatural brownie recipe was finally de-throned by "Nancy's brownies"--although I have no idea who Nancy is.. they win. I had them on vacation (at relative's house), and I drove from the airport to the grocery to get the almond extract for these brownies. ---Beyond incredible!

Nancy's Brownies

1 cup butter
4 squares unsweetened chocolate
2 cups white sugar
4 large eggs at room temperature
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
3/4 teaspoon almond extract
1 cup white flour
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
2 cups miniature marshmallows
(1 cup of nuts optional)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and lightly flour a 13x9 cake pan and set aside.

Melt butter and chocolate squares carefully in a large saucepan. Set aside to cool slightly, then...

Gradually mix in, with large spoon, whisk or spatula, the white sugar, eggs (one at a time until blended), vanilla, and almond extract. I beat this well by hand until smooth. Gradually fold in flour, just until combined. Fold in chocolate chips, marshmallows, and optional nuts.

Bake brownies in the prepared 13x9 pan. The original recipe calls for 30 minutes, but I bake about 35-40 minutes, until brownies start to pull away a bit from the sides of the pan, and a cake tester comes out clean. Cool.

Well I am learning so much for next-time! Besides the need to switch banks.

Hopefully I will be eating so well in Paris that I will forget all about eating these fees. I will just try to enjoy everything 3% more than planned.

Peanut Butter Brownies (that are flourless)--I cannot stand those "healthy' substitutions like beans or chickpeas--EW. This one just uses peanut butter! YUM.

I made it for a cook-out and no one knew they were 'gluten-free' or flourless. They loved that they were fudgy. And I have made many recipes from that site (Six ingredient Fudge crinkles are still #1).

Yes, Masha your post really lifted my spirit; I really appreciated that because US Bank had said to bring travelers checks for back-up ... but then after calling four branches yesterday, they alerted me to the fact that they no longer issue travelers checks.

Therefore, like your card, my card will work. And I will have Euros on hand for smaller shops, for coffee, and small purchases.

Yes, that cannot happen. I have one card. And know no one. I would have to just keep calling until the card company 'made it' work.

Reserving Vegetarian/vegan meal for flight?

Has anyone reserved a veg. meal for a flight? Was it edible? Or did you regret making the reservation? --Was/is it always pasta?

I ask because I am flying on an international flight that includes meals. I want to know if people have had a 'good' (at least edible, I don't expect greatness) meal for the vegetarian/vegan options.. or if I should just plan to bring my own dinner. I also don't like any pasta dishes.. so that is why I figured I would ask if it typically is pasta.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Thank you: I rather hate Disneyland, so I am glad it is not that. I realized in the last few days (when people on Tripadvisor imploded with paranoia) I take a lot of risks everyday and in fact I took a bus out of the South-side past 10:30 pm (maybe midnight) alone back when I was 16..

I have not used a debit-card before. I think once I use it a few times in the US then I will be more comfortable using it there. Also, I don't want to be careless but worse comes to worse, money is paper--I should not compromise my experience due to others' supposed events/encounters.

Thank you for your response. US Bank (or US Bancorp) has no international affiliates. Clearly after I return, I will be opening or switching to Chase because as long as I return without major issue, I hope to go back or to another country next.

For now, I don't care as much about fees since I cannot avoid them. ---But I will look for BNP Paribas with the hope that it will receive my 'American card well and hopefully they have an safer ATM inside the bank in the fifth arrondissement.

Yes, I have made the 'Behemoth Crumb Cake' that is discussed on the thread posted by roxlet... if you decide you like good crumbs, then make it. But you might not want to think about the butter-content.
