Thanks--I wish I could plan out my shopping-trips, then I'd do that.

NAY-Angelcots--Sorry I know someone had good luck with these, but mine had no taste. Just over-ripe with no sweetness or much of anything.

MEH-Fresh figs--these were okay, but I am starting to think it is just better to buy the frozen figs because usually the fresh figs are such a crap-shoot.

Wow, I can never get the pastrami-style lox... unless I go right when they open in the morning. It is always out. Today they said they were out all day, and it will be back Saturday or Sunday. So if you can find it available, eat it for me.

Vegetarian and Vegan BBQ foods

I have to agree--homemade veggie burgers can be very delicate and hard to grill. If you don't want to buy Boca burgers or TJoe's prepared burgers (very tasty!) or some other pre-made burger (WHF has great ones in the prep-foods section), then I would definitely make veggie-kebabs.

I am addicted to eggplant.. so I'd probably bring an eggplant dish. Usually I just think about whatever veggie/vegan dish I want to eat and make 2-3 times the full serving size.

Come to think of it, I used to really like Smart Dogs.. but I am not sure if you can have soy.

(BTW--sorry your family is not accepting of your lifestyle choices. I had the same experience for years; however, I just continued to bring tasty veggie options.. and overtime they came to understand. Later I had to go gf for medical reasons and once again they kind of just didn't get it ("You mean you're not going to eat your sister's birthday cake?! THAT'S RUDE"... Umm, what.)... but once again after bringing dishes and talking about what gluten is, it all sunk in. --Let your dishes speak for you, and hopefully over time they will come to enjoy veggie dishes too. If not, just move away from them. Which is kind of joke, but coming true for me.)

YAY^YAY=0% Frozen Greek Yogurt. I've had ice cream for almost every lunch and dinner (or mashed potatoes) for over a week now (major oral surgery)... so I consider myself an expert. After $80+ worth of ice cream, I have to say this is my favorite at Trader Joe's (for the record: the new Cashew Milk Ice Cream by SoDelicious at WHF is #1). I am not a big dairy person.. but the tart flavor on this is very fresh, and I might be coked-out on pain-killers, but I think I can feel the 6 grams of protein per serving promoting healing within my mouth as I eat it.

Oral Surgery.. GF, vegetarian, dairy-free

Thanks, I know that I should wait.. I took a couple of sips today because it was really helping digestion pre-surgery, but it kind of burned in my mouth.. probably due to small amount of alcohol, so I figured I better stop.

Does anyone know: would it be bad to drink Kombucha while I have these open sores in my mouth? Since Kombucha has 'bacteria' in it and is raw.. would that lead to an infection?

Discontinued at Trader Joe's: January 2015 - June 2015

I think the Pastrami Salmon gets sold out really quickly. Go in the morning.. or if you are making a hike to get to your TJ's call ahead of time.

YAY-Soy Vanilla Ice Cream--This tastes like froyo to me. And it gets creamy like froyo if you let it sit for about a minute.

Oral Surgery.. GF, vegetarian, dairy-free

They didn't give me a choice about sedation. I brought it up, and they said no-reason. Moreover, it was $4k.. so it probably would have just been more money with drugs.

Unfortunately I cannot stand bananas.. but maybe I will consider it since I hate them already so they couldn't possibly be turned into a 'sick-food' since I already hate them.

I cracked and bought more df/gf ice cream, but I am totally done now. No more ice cream!!! (FYI: the new cashew-milk ice cream is incredible!!!!)

Oral Surgery.. GF, vegetarian, dairy-free

There was no anesthesia or sedation. They rubbed on numbing-stuff on my mouth, but I was awake and fully aware for the whole 2 hours then drove 1.5 hours home. So I don't think that's what is affecting appetite. I had a lot of gf/df ice cream today--kind of grossed myself out on it but the cold felt so good.. so hopefully I can lay off that tomorrow and/or swear off ice cream for a long time.

Thanks everyone. So far I am making it without a blender.. I am moving and have to get rid of everything next month, otherwise I would buy one. I had no food yesterday after the surgery because I was having trouble swallowing even liquid. Then I woke up today and didn't even want hb eggs. Midday I had two non-dairy yogurts and some df ice cream. Otherwise I am just not at all hungry and struggling to keep track of 3 sets of pills (not to mention usual vitamins too). I might run out for applesauce and (hate to admit this) babyfood--because then I'd have a bunch of little pureed veggie options.

Each one of the detox soups listed 'full-fat coconut milk' or maybe it was even coconut cream... so they didn't really seem low-calorie at all. But I hate coconut regardless, so I don't think I will be buying them.

Seems like I am always buying ______________ when I grocery shop

If you live near a Trader Joe's, the radishes there are more expensive than generic grocery-chains, but they are very clean, and they also have a great taste on their own. Otherwise, sometimes I find that they are very dirty and taste like dirt more than a radish.

Eggs
Radishes
Fruit--especially watermelon

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I will definitely see if I can find a blender because I don't think I'll have the energy to drive out for prepared smoothies or anything that I need. A local gourmet market is doing a deal of 6 'soups' (they are detox oriented made of only pureed veggies and fruits) for $29.99... which seems crazy expensive, but I think it might be worth doing because otherwise I will just end up having broth all week.

I am sorry that I even mentioned eggs. Maybe a separate dialogue can be started--to respect that this is a thread about TJ.

Trader Joe's YAY/MEH/NAY Thread-June 2015 [OLD]

Thanks for the discussion. I will say the one thing that I am annoyed about--and it is/was my fault for not checking it.. is the expiration date. I just bought them yesterday and the date is the 20th.. which would be fine--I know eggs are good for weeks after the date--but they already kind of smell not-fresh. This is the first time I have purchased eggs at TJoe's, and I don't think I will again. The smell is just off-putting.

Oral Surgery.. GF, vegetarian, dairy-free

Hello,
I am preparing my pantry, freezer, and kitchen for about two weeks of soft or liquid diet following major oral surgery. I won't have anyone around to prepare foods or drive me to the store.. so I am trying to stock-pile no-prep items to survive for two weeks. I don't have a blender or a processor.. so instead so far I have purchased boxed broths, clear soups, jello, dairy free yogurt, dairy-free ice cream, and popsicles. And I hope hard-boiled eggs will help too.

Those of you who have had oral surgery, let me know your suggestions. I found old threads about post-op from wisdom teeth (already had those out and already), but I wasn't gf, dairy-free at that time. So let me know if anyone has good ideas for soft liquid no-chew, no-prep items.

YAY-Frozen Figs-I still love these because I am dying for fresh figs, and these save me. I'd rather have one of these than ice cream or a baked good.

MEH-Sweet Potato Tortilla Chips-These finally made it to the midwest. ... but they are really bland. They need to add spices or something. For the fat and calories, you might as well buy the other chips.. . or just get the Popped Kettle Popcorn chips.. still the best! I wouldn't buy them again unless the entire chip aisle was empty. Or if I had a bland friend hosting a bland party, and I wished to bring her a bland chip.

MEH-Watermelon. I had been at another grocery store... and decided I might as well just drive to TJ's to get a watermelon and the rest of my groceries there because the price at TJ's would be better. After sitting in construction and heavy downpour, the watermelon had no taste. Tastes kinda like a cucumber?

NAY/MEH-Cage free organic eggs. I have never had organic, let alone cage free eggs in my life. I decided to hardboil both in my DASH and see if they would taste different. ... Umm no. I probably could have gotten twice as many eggs for the price. That being said I am going to go read 10 articles about cage free organic eggs and see how much better it is for me.

YAY-Diverse greeting-cards-Now I think I have Yay'ed the greeting-cards probably too many times, but not only do they have all types of subjects/holidays on their cards, but at my store they also display all types of humans (and animals from around the world too) on a weekly basis.

YAY--Savon de France Oatmeal Exfoliant Ginger Almond Soap--Wow just look at that title! Don't you want to rub that title all over yourself? Even in the package this thing smells wonderful. I might be transported back to France if I smell it too long.

Yes, they had SMORES Flavor.. I really miss Smores now that I am gf, so I didn't get it today, but I am confirming they had all three flavors in the midwest. And they are 11 cents cheaper than Meijer and Jewel.

WHAT. Quest Bars are the only bars I will eat. They don't taste fake, and they (IMHO) have acceptable ingredients (if you avoid the ones with fake sugars). Last year I went abroad, and traveling alone they were a god-send because if I was stuck in line then I could just grab one out of my bag instead of losing my spot to go get lunch.

You can also split the bar into two, ball-it up, and then warm them, and they turn into a cookie.. Google it, if interested.

The 'fresh' bakery items are mostly NAYs.. except these are YAYs:
--the flourless chocolate cake--I've brought this a lot to events because I know it is insanely rich, and I can eat it.
--the package of two gluten free brownies (IMHO these are better than the sea salt brownies.. from what I remember those were just dry hunks)

These frozen dessert items are YAYs;
--chocolate ganache cake--this was my old go-to take a party cake, it seems like such a steal due to the price
--all types of macarons (prefer the vanilla ones)
Also in the frozen section, I am also told that the frozen raspberry torte is good, and the lava cakes are supposedly good, and people do rave about the croissants.

YAY-Radishes. First of all, radishes were one of the few things that have stopped me from 'only' shopping TJ's. I must have radishes! So it is nice to not need to drive to two stores for groceries. --Although these cost more than my usual store, the radishes at TJ are actually clean and have a consistent taste.

Recently when I think I am still hungry after dinner then I put some eggs in my Dash egg-cooker. Since it takes ~10 minutes for them to become hard-boiled, usually I realize I am not even hungry by the time the buzzer goes off.. so I put them in the fridge for breakfast. Win win.

Also, I am out of shrimp, but this WW recipe sounds good.

I am back on a new stir-fry kick. I load up my freezer with frozen veggies and make stir-fry for most dinners with either shrimp or eggs or both. I use Bragg's Liquid Aminos in place of sauce.

However the big change that I have made for the past two weeks is working-out immediately before dinner. It really helps. I try to come home from work, change, and get out the door before I know what I am doing to myself. Don't think--just do.
