What are you baking these days? May 2013 Edition

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies--I used the recipe for 3 ingredient PB cookies but then put in semi-sweet chocolate chips. --And two more steps: 1) I rolled them in sugar before baking them, even though they weren't meant to be PB Blossoms...
2) I took them out of the oven early and put them in the freezer (a lot like some of the Fudgy brownie recipes) because then the middles stay gooey

What Food Trend are You So Sick Of?

--Green juice.. fresh juice smoothies.. carrot juice.. tomato juice.. but mostly GREEEEN JUICE.

AND coconut butter.
AND greek yogurt or Euro yogurt or AUS yogurt or protein yogurt.. it's one thing to eat it as part of your day--it is another thing to put it into every recipe/item possible.

What would YOU do?

I think it would depend how much food I had that day. I always, always have breakfast, but if for some reason I didn't have it--then I would take some for myself. Save the rest.

However, most likely I would just leave it where it was and not eat some. And not mention it. I would feel guilty eating in front of starving people. And by starving, I mean hungry.

Enough with the 'green juice'!!!

Yes because blending up fries would be gross.

Enough with the 'green juice'!!!

I'll be honest, I had to look that up... and I do love melon: so that sounds so good. When someone asks me if I want some green juice, I am going to say "yes, but only if it is a midori sour!"

Enough with the 'green juice'!!!

I find myself surrounded by colleagues/friends that are obsessed with green juice... moreover, I attempt to be polite and gracefully decline a sample, but usually they always want me to try it or to preach about the benefits. --I know there are many, but I eat spinach with/in at least 2 of my 3 meals a day.. so I think I am covered!

Anyone else surrounded by people who are "born-again" green-juicers?

What discontinued products do you miss?

All from childhood..

Special K cereal bites... they were little granola type squares in an individual serving bag.. now you cannot even find a picture of them.

And yes, also the cinnamon roll at McD's that I would order as a kid--even though I hadn't a thought about how it was probably full of ingredients that were horrible for me...

Quisp--one time our uncle gave us this, found randomly at the store, a cereal that he remembered from his own childhood, but we never found it again. Probably good, it was all sugar.

Wow.. good idea! (Although I am somewhat frustrated with myself for not thinking of that on my own.)

What do you prefer to eat with your hands out of the bag or box ...

I am a one-person household. I eat what I want, in whatever way I want it, and when I want it.
I definitely eat almost everything out of the package/container/bag/box--that being said, I eat mostly fresh items that do not come in containers... so when there is one, I like to use the container to its full-potential!

Mostly... this happens for cereal, granola, seeds, and dried fruits.

Oh, I too am sorry that you did not like them. I buy them every chance I get. I have never noticed a vinegar taste, but I love all types of vinegar too... so maybe I just don't recognize it anymore.

On a side note, after buying them for years, I have only noted the mushrooms have gotten smaller... but I still love 'em. If you find another great brand, do let us know.

Sunkist fruit gems =LOVE and a great comparison

(Also I tried making chocolate-covered mandarin slices.. using the TJ Mandarin slices and everyone at work loved them!)

Want or need

I will agree--I mandate that if I am going to buy something I don't need then I have to use cash for that item. It is my hope that by seeing the cash 'go,' then I commit to really wanting it. Usually I am more likely to make an impulse buy on Friday night when I feel like "I am so glad I SURVIVED another week." Or if my "clients" really, really, really drove me nuts--but I have gotten better at not letting work-agitation affect my choices.

Also, I agree with HillJ: often if something is "new" or a limited flavor.. I want to try it. I just love trying new foods, products, flavors, etc.

Trader Joe's Yay/Nay Thread - April 2013 [OLD]

It is shelf-stable--before it is opened. However, I noticed after a quick google search that it appears they used to/do have a 'fresh' version. Mine did not.

I have never had Cap'n Crunch, but I usually don't eat cereal so I am impressed at Puffins (especially because it is a pretty "healthy"/hearty indulgence). They are very big and puffy too. I noticed the PB ones are bigger than the cinnamon ones. I prefer the big puffsters!

HELLZ YAY--Kale chips--I know this is old to many, but I figured why would I pay so much for what I make often on my own... because it tastes like MAGIC. I ate a bunch and now I am hiding the bag from myself so that I can still have some for tomorrow.

Nay--Kimchi--Sorry I think this went downhill. Although I am used to the 'real-deal' so I am probably biased.

Yay--Prep salads---I never purchase these, but I am impressed how much they pack into them.

Yay--Dried Mandarin oranges--as noted earlier.. sweet and juicy.

Yay--Puffins Peanut Butter--are these candy or cereal? They could definitely work for either. I could see myself taking them to a movie.. although they are rather big and crunchy so maybe not.
Meh--Puffins Cinnamon--Cinnamon is my favorite, but these taste like pumpkin-pie to me.. and I don't like pumpkin pie.

Yay--Organic Strawberry Lemonade--they were giving out samples of this. It was delightful.

(On a side note, this is the second TJs where I could not find the 'bits and pieces' from the fruit-leathers.. maybe they don't have that anymore?
And they also did not have any of the Srircha.. all sold out.)

I agree--YAY--mandarin oranges, and I never buy dried fruit, but I saw what Amy said and figured.. why not.

Your Top 5 Trader Joe's Products?

This is helpful. I also use these threads to know "what not to buy"--anything that is too good, that has the potential to be gone in 1 day for someone else, is not what I want to be spending money on.

Yes, I think it is a healthy-indulgence (due to price) because I know I could get a bale of seaweed at the local chinese grocery store for a few dollars.

YAY--the wasabi seaweed sheets. I had only had the regular flavor before, and thought it was no big deal (and not much substance for the money--because you could get hooked easy). Definitely the wasabi version is flavorful and fun, although I won't be buying that often.

NAY--the Blondie mix. I didn't buy it, but they were sampling it, and I noticed it was thin, did not have that much flavor, and very very crispy. I am not a crispy-person.

Do you recommend a particular model/brand? I have a very small apartment and find it unbearable to turn on the oven during the warm months--this would be ideal. (Moreover, I love roasted veggies!)

How do you take your coffee?

Yes, it is definitely better if you add the cinnamon yourself. I have tried 'cinnamon-flavored' coffees, and I never care for them.

"Do not eat raw"--Angel Food Mix

I am glad to hear you have survived it raw or slightly raw because they also said "DO NOT UNDERBAKE" (in all caps and bold!) and in part due to the fact that is very light colored regardless and prepared in a bundt pan... it was pretty hard to tell if there were any parts that were undercooked.

"Do not eat raw"--Angel Food Mix

Do you indeed make it from 'box' kind (or from scratch)? If from the box, do you figure the warning is just overly cautious?--I would understand if so, because in college, we definitely sampled the cookie dough with the same warning.

"Do not eat raw"--Angel Food Mix

I have never made "boxed" Angel Food cake before (only the real deal), but I noticed it says "Do not eat raw" on the batter. I looked at the ingredients, and I don't understand why Angel food vs. other cake mixes... should not be consumed. You only need to mix it with water... it isn't like those cookie-dough tubes with raw egg. Does anyone know why Angel Food would say this?

(Unrelated note--Boxed Angel Food is definitely not nearly as good as the real thing. Oh well.)

How do you take your coffee?

Black-Black: spicy and sweet.

Blackest-black coffee with a touch of cinnamon (or the tinniest bit of unsweetened cocoa powder) and a tiny bit of natural sweetener.

Yes, people always look at me oddly, but they also often comment that it smells good.

The Hawaiian BBQ chips (original version.. not reduced guilt) are the ones that I go down the aisle.. look at.. nod.. and then carry-on. I am not even a 'chip' person; I just like anything smothered in spice. ... Too good to buy.

A good quick fix is.. (in case you haven't done this)... put a chocolate chip inside each raspberry.. keep in the freezer for a quick, no-bake chocolate-break!

OR Pop-up Bowl... MESS

I did not mean to buy the Orville Redenbacher's Pop-up Bowl kind of popcorn (I wanted a regular bag), but unfortunately I did. --When you try to open the bags, popcorn flies everywhere.

We tried multiple bags.. read the directions multiple times... still the popcorn flies everywhere. I wish they would go back to a regular bag, not this Ed Debevic's hat..
