Sour Cream–Banana Bread

I too used Greek yogurt in place of sour cream. Decreased sugar to 1/4 cup and it still was plenty sweet. Bananas are very sweet when ripe so a full cup of sugar is simply not needed.

A perfect counterpoint to a spicy meal. Crisp, fresh flavors, great crunchiness. Like other reviewers, I used walnut oil instead of pricier pistachio. Leftovers good the next day too.

Slow Cooker Split Pea Soup

Perfect for polar vortex days. Cooks up nice and thick. Added sliced soy sausage at end in place of ham and served with sourdough roll.

Vegetarian Butternut Squash and Swiss Chard Polenta Lasagna

This was fantastic! A welcome change from pasta-based lasagna. Great flavor combos.
One issue: I didn't understand why the polenta should be spread on a 17x12 sheet if the baking dish is 13x9, so I spread half the polenta in the 13x9 dish, covered it with a layer of waxed paper, then spread the second half. At assembly time, I just removed the polenta that was on the waxed paper and then inverted it onto the baking dish to form the second polenta layer. Seemed simpler than what's described in the recipe. I also added mushrooms to the chard mix, since I didn't have quite enough chard. Will make again.

Chocolate Swirl Pumpkin Bread

This is very good *provided* you cut the sugar by 2/3. I used 1/2 cup and it was plenty sweet, even with bittersweet chocolate. 1.5 cups sugar is insane. Instead of swirling the chocolate in the bowl, I spread it on top of the batter in the pan and used a knife to swirl it through the batter. Very attractive loaf.

Roasted Tomato, Chickpea, and Swiss Chard Soup

Perfect as a thick soup for a fall evening. Like other reviewers, I added more spice. I also used smoked salt instead of regular, which complemented the roasted tomato flavor.

Kimchi and Shrimp Fried Rice

Loved this! Used more lime juice and more sesame oil than called for and it was wonderful. Added 1 cup green peas for color. Don't skip the eggs, they're a good counterpoint to the spice in the rest of the dish.

Furikake Wonton Crisps

These are amazing! Fast, easy, versatile. Didn't have any furikake, so I used a variety of toppings -- smoked paprika, sesame & smoked salt, smoked salt alone. It seems the salted ones brown faster than the unsalted.

I don't have much experience with yeast breads, but this one was quite easy to make and had a great texture and taste. I used lemon juice instead of milk in the glaze, which worked well with the filling.

Kimchi Soft Tofu Stew (Soondubu Jjigae)

Wow, was this ever easy and delicious! Used store-bought kimchi. Added the egg and that provided a nice texture nuance. I liked having the rice on the side; it balanced the spice of the stew.

Fantastic recipe for lemon lovers! The only change I made was to cut the sugar in half for both the base and the meringue (which I do routinely for all recipes). A refreshing counterpoint to a spicy main dish.

Slow Cooker Steel-Cut Oatmeal

Good recipe, with some tweaking. Unless you want really soft, creamy oatmeal, use less liquid; I didn't use the coconut milk at all. We like our porridge a bit crunchy. Apple or orange juice is a good alternative to all the water or to half the water, depending on your tastes.

Delicious on a cool fall night. Doesn't take too long if you plan your steps ahead of time. Go easy on the salt; the cheese and olives give plenty. The mild polenta is a suitable counterpoint for the spicy veggie layer. Relatively healthy comfort food!

Mushroom and Carrot Bulgur

Thanks to the reviewers who suggested more carrots and mushrooms. That, and more wine, made this very tasty. The nuttiness of the bulgur compensates for the lack of herbs and spices and provides a counterpoint to a bold main dish.

Lemon Meringue Pie with a Graham Cracker Crust

Recipe calls for far too much sugar. I used none for the crust (the crackers already have a lot in them), less than half for the filling and meringue and it was just right. Easy and flavorful otherwise.

Celery and Olive Orzo Salad

Not half bad! I added more celery and spiced it up with some hot sauce in addition to the pepper. Made it the night before to allow the flavors to mingle. Don't skip the mint, it gives this salad a fresh, springy touch.

Butternut Squash Lasagna

Takes a while to prep all the components, but the result is definitely worth it. I followed others' suggestions and made 1.5x the béchamel, which was a good quantity. Didn't have chestnut purée, so I sliced some whole ones, which I think added an interesting texture that you wouldn't get with the purée. Peppered the sauce and veggies liberally, but didn't add any salt to either, since the cheese has plenty.
