Best restaurants in London (for lunch)

Thank you all so much for your recommendations! I will be visiting from new york city, and while alain ducasse does have a restaurant here, it really isn't all that spectacular (one michelin star). I would really like to visit one of his more revered establishments. What is the dress code at Alain Ducasse (and Ramsay)

Best restaurants in London (for lunch)

Hi. I will be visiting london in a little over a week, and would like to visit a very nice restaurant for lunch during my stay. I have looked at Hibiscus and Gordon Ramsay. Does anybody have any recommendations? I would like a place with great food of course, good service and a really beautiful space.

Thank you for all of your help!

Lots of strawberries, need more ideas please.

I'd definitely make a bunch of strawberry cocktails. You could try making a strawberry syrup by adding the strawberries, some orange juice, lime, ginger, vanilla, and sugar into a pot and just let them simmer and steep. I'd then strain and add some sparkling wine or water, maybe even champagne and some vodka and pour over ice. Enjoy the strawberries!

Vegetarian Tasting Menus?

@nmprisons I had similar thoughts about Le Bernardin, and you're probably right.

For dinner, Eleven Madison Park offers a four course menu priced at 125 and an eight course tasting menu for 195

Vegetarian Tasting Menus?

Le Bernardin may also be a good option (after reading the post that Per Se will not be open during your stay here in the city). It would be perfect for you as a pescatarian, and I am sure that if you called in advance they would be able to prepare something for your partner. I know they always have a pasta dish on the menu and could probably exclude any seafood components. Eleven Madison Park is probably my favorite restaurant in the city and I know they can accommodate vegetarians. Daniel comes in at a very close second on my list (maybe even tied with EMP) and the food there is soo satisfying (and delicious).

Vegetarian Tasting Menus?

I would strongly recommend Per Se especially given the occasion. A more casual option would be Blue Hill, as they can easily accommodate vegetarians. I have been to both restaurants, and while I am not a vegetarian myself, I got a gift card for my vegetarian friend for Blue Hill and she said it was wonderful. She also enjoyed her time at Dirt Candy (though much more casual).

Romera

Yea I read about him in the design issue. Well on the website under the contact/reservation information, they do not have a date posted for when they will begin accepting reservations so I assume they already have.

Has anybody been? Thoughts?

Masa

I would agree. I know the food in Tokyo is great, but I really do not think that there can be so many stars there. Though most foreigners/travelers (much of masa's customers) would abide by michelin rather than the NYtimes.

Masa

The NY Times reviews tend to have a fair emphasis on service and decor, whereas, say, Michelin focuses almost exclusively on what's on the plate in front of you. NYT really emphasizes on how a four star restaurant must serve great food but also deliver a wonderful experience. It really depends on what you look for when you go out to eat at one of these restaurants. I feel that If i am spending several hundred dollars I should be catered to and treated extremely well, in addition to eating delicious food and sitting in a beautiful space. I hope that the reduction of a star will serve as a type of "wake up call" to the restaurant (though I doubt it will). For 500 dollars a person you should not be told to wait outside of the restaurant.

This being said, I doubt that the restaurant's Michelin rating with decrease, as even mr. Sifton said "Masa is the city’s greatest sushi restaurant. That is not nothing".

I too am not a fan of Sifton. I really don't like his reviews (I love Bruni's). Though nevertheless I do support this decision of his. It really destroys the image of how Masa is untouchable and extremely exclusive. I'm glad he did it.

I wonder how Mr. Takayama feels. I would be furious.

Restaurants in Japan

Have you been to it?

Restaurants in Japan

I believe the new location is in the Intercontinental. What are some of the high end japanese places in tokyo?

Restaurants in Japan

I meant similar caliber in the level of cooking, and the restaurant does not have to be french. I didn't know Gagnaire had a restaurant in tokyo, is it good and would you recommend it? Is it michelin rated (even though i know how controversial the tokyo michelin guide is)?
Your input has been very helpful and I really appreciate it. Thank you!

Restaurants in Japan

There is no special occasion, I will just be traveling to Tokyo and during my time there would like to visit one of the top restaurants.

Restaurants in Japan

Are there any restaurants of similar caliber that you would reccomend?

Restaurants in Japan

Did you enjoy Les Creations de Narisawa? How does it compare to Chateau Joel Robuchon?

Restaurants in Japan

Thank you all for your responses. Has anyone been to or hear good things about Les Creations de Narisawa?

Restaurants in Japan

Yes I am talking about the 3 star restaurant in the Ebisu garden. I suppose i wouldn't mind spending over 200, but i really dont want to go further than 300. How is the l'atelier? Is the La tour D'argent in tokyo worth it? Are there any other 3 michelin star restaurants that I would be able to dine at (given that i am a westerner that cannot speak a word of japanese)? I also heard that Michelin's tokyo ratings were not so accurate, so really any of the top restaurants, 3 michelin or not, would be fine.

Restaurants in Japan

I will be visiting Tokyo in two weeks, and would like to go to a fine dining restaurant during my time there. My sights are currently set on Chateau restaurant Joel Robuchon due to its proximity to my hotel, though really any restaurant that is considered one of the best in the city will do. I am looking to spend no more than 200 dollars per person excluding beverages, tax and tip (by the way, i have never visited the city before, and what is considered a "good tip" at a fine dining restaurant in tokyo?) Are there any recommendations? I do not speak japanese, so if anybody could recommend a restaurant where atleast somebody speaks english, that would be wonderful.

Thank you!

Extended menu at per se?

Thanks for your thoughts and comments! The only category where the two compete in is food, as the service and decor is better at per se. Also, per se seems to cater much more to their clients and have a lot less restrictions (i.e. photos are aloud). So with this in mind along with your comments, I suppose I'll be going to per se!

Extended menu at per se?

Has anybody on this thread been to Masa? Would the 500$ be better spent there?

Extended menu at per se?

Do you think that it was worth it? and also did they give you a copy of the menu of everything you had that evening?

Extended menu at per se?

So i've heard from multiple sources that it is possible to have additional courses or an extended menu at both the french laundry and per se. Is this true? I plan on going back to per se for my second time in about two months and I would like to know in advance. Also, is there a particular table or section of the dining room that is considered to be the best place to sit?

Thanks!

Graduation Celebration Dinner

Congratulatons!

Blue Hill has a 5 course tasting menu that (when I was last there) is priced at 72 or 75 dollars. However, as stated by RGR, tax, tip, and drinks will probably put that over your limit. A more casual and less expensive option could be DBGB, which was on the nyeater list. I've been there twice, and the food is tasty and satisfying, though the room can get really noisy. I know some (if not all) of the jean-georges restaurants in the city (of course aside from the flagship) are offering a spring promotion, with dinner priced at 38. unfortunately, the promotion is only offered on certain days at various times (usually like monday-thursday, 5:30-6:30 and 10:00 and later) but a la carte options are available aswell. I would recommend perry st. - its very clean and refreshing, and the food is executed well.
You may also consider scarpetta, though that may be on the pricier side.

Enjoy your meal!

EMP Dinner: 4 Courses plus Duck or Tasting Menu?

Hi daisy. I actually just went to emp on friday for lunch, and it was really amazing. They really have stepped it up -- once again. I am planning on going to dinner there sometime in june, and i believe i will get the tasting menu. I feel like the extra 60 or so dollars for the tasting menu is worth it. Given that you are going to spend the money and that you are already there, you might as well go all out. If you do get the tasting menu, perhaps you could request the duck for one of your courses. You should probably ask them when you make the reservation if this would be possible. If this doesn't end up working out, the 5 course alternative will be plenty. Enjoy your meal!

Gilt and London

Yes - I did mean Gordon Ramsay at The London. From what I have seen and heard, the dishes at Gilt are often too complicated and contain too many components, many of which are unnecessary. I really do not understand many of Michelin's decisions...and they were so wrong about so many things this year (along with last year, and the year before).

Gilt and London

How are these two restaurants? I haven't been to either, and i'm always wary of two michelin star restaurants that have a 2 star nytimes rating. I also think that it is irritating that london's prix fixe is priced the same as Le Bernardin's. All thoughts and opinions are welcomed.

Thanks!

NYC Michelin Stars 2011

While the food may seem somewhat "familiar" at Daniel, the execution of nearly all of the dishes is pretty close to perfection, and the food is all very, very satisfying. I prefer Daniel over per se, probably also over JG and Le Benardin.

If we're talking familiarity, I do not know why we are bashing Daniel and JG while not saying a word about LB.

The quality of the ingredient at LB is obviously very high, but while the food is great, it is rather boring. Of course their clientele - mostly businessmen - must be accounted for, and most of the businessmen i know going on business lunches do not enjoy too many surprises.

Also a comment on the location of the three star restaurants. Yes, per se and masa are 20 feet apart from each other and JG is on the opposing side of Columbus Circle. But aside from Masa and per se, the youngest of the three star establishments is 14 years old. Tribeca and the LES have only recently become "chic" (i'd know i live in tribeca).

I agree that there should be some more geographic diversity, but really not too many other restaurants deserve three or two stars. C&S and Craft should probably have a star each (let's be real people - the spotted pig has a star), Del posto should stay right where it is and I personally think that EMP should have atleast two stars.

I went to Corton a week ago, and my meal was solid. On my first visit i received atrocious service, but michelin only rates "what's on the table". I had an excellent lamb dish there, and the brioche dessert which i've had two times is one of the best things i have ever had.

Why has London had two stars for this long? seriously? I've never been and probably will never go, as it has only two stars from the NYT and is charging the same price as LB.
