Birthday During SxSW

I haven't been back to wink in a while. The tables are so close together and the dining room gets LOUD! not always a bad thing but not great for an intimate dinner. I'd go with Carillon or LaV. Barley Swine has a lot of great plates (but always a few misses) and is good if you don't mind the communal seating.

Restaurants with lean red meat options?

FYI: http://www.latimes.com/science/scienc...

the government is finally getting ready to admit that they were wrong about food. saturated fat isn't the killer that they thought it was. Carbs seem to be the culprit.

So enjoy that juicy ribeye but only have a few bites of those mashed potatoes. :)

Barlata - what to get?

oh, I might have seen you there. Went back at 5:30 today but they only do happy hour in the bar area and I hate the communal seating... the seasoning was very off today on a few of the same dishes we had yesterday. guess they have some consistency issues... by the way the mel i mato was great, I loved the ice cream that came with it.

Barlata - what to get?

Thanks, I had several really nice dishes. The chorizo was excellent. that and the garlic shrimp were my favorites. Didn't have a bad dish. They had a condensed menu so it made choosing easier. some others we enjoyed were the arroz negre, the iberico tenderloin, pork belly, and the brandada. She enjoyed her chocolate mousse desert. I'll definitely be back :)

Barlata - what to get?

I'm going for dinner tomorrow night for the first time and was perusing the menu which turns out to be huge. Do you guys have any recommendations? it's going to be just two of us so I'm thinking 6 or 7 plates would suffice...

Anglophiles take note - your breakfast is here....

I had brunch there today. the bangers were great and mushrooms were good when I added a bit of salt. not a fan of english bacon (which is I guess canadian bacon?) and the eggs were a little overcooked for my taste. No free refills on my iced tea :( not a lot of seating but I'm eager to go back for fish and chips some friday.

they were out of pasty's which looked really good. hopefully they'll be available next time...

Who has best BBQ in San Marcos?

not a lot of choices... I've only been to black's and it is very inconsistent. the first time it was sublime (think LA bbq) but future visits had been mediocre.

New Reality Show Will Feature 4 Austin Restaurants

I liked how they were called out for their semi-customized menu. When I went I was disappointed that I got the same exact plates as my better half even though we made it clear we had very different tastes. maybe they should change their slogan to "kinda couture, but sometimes off the rack"

Trying to pick that one weekend brunch spot...

I enjoyed veranda as well. I don't go to many buffets but was pleased with the quality of the food here. didn't have a massive line either.

Fixe Austin's Southern House

I went last night and there were positives and negatives. the lobster/crawfish pot pie was very good and so were the quail grits. I also enjoyed the boudin very much.

The biscuits that they are so proud of were fine, but I just had much better ones at salty sow last week.

The beef tendon tasted like chicharrones. nothing spectacular. the hot sauce was very nice though.

Fried chicken was mediocre. If you like Lucy's you might like this.

Best Tamales by the Dozen in Austin?

I tried one of their strawberry tamales a few months ago. surprisingly it was pretty good... Thats a great little place, I should go there more often. My only problem with them is the lack of homemade tortillas

Thanksgiving at The Carillon

yes. our waiter told us that there had been no changes in the kitchen staff (I've only seen watkins at service one or two times). I enjoyed my meal the same as always

trace was the same. I was hoping for better luck since it was not a buffet...

Thanksgiving late lunch

Try to make reservations ASAP. I procrastinated and most places (including buffets) are already fully booked. We're going to Trace. Tried to get into trio, hotel ella, carillon, cru but no luck with reservations!

NY chowhound visiting Austin

bbq and texmex are probably the 2 cuisines that Austin does better then NYC. you can get really good bbq with a much smaller wait at la bbq.

also, noble sandwich would be a local spot you might enjoy

Trip Report: Kabuto, Bazaar Meats, Wicked Spoon

what is a typical price/person at bazaar? I went to his place in LA and I think it was <150pp. The food wasn't on par with e, but I didn't think it was horribly overpriced

BBQ between San Antonio and Austin Airport

lockhart is right on the way if you take the toll road. if you take 35 you can go to the new blacks bbq in san marcos. i've been 3 times and it has been maddeningly inconsistent (which is true of the lockhart places for me)

Which Churrascaria?

sorry, I'm still bitter from being dragged there by a friend for dinner a few months ago. for that amount of $$ we could have had a fabulous meal at any number of restaurants. I seriously would have rather gone to cici's then Fogo.

I completely agree with your description of the meats. I would rather go to texas roadhouse get a decent steak and have all you can eat peanuts at half the price.

Which Churrascaria?

If you're into medicore/bad food at a good value you should check out cici's pizza. $5 for all you can eat, if you have a big appetite that could make it $1/lb ;)

lunch for $40 should get you something pretty great...

Alize - review is coming, but first a question to the CH community

Looks like someone from the restaurant checks this board. glad they got it fixed. however, $4 duck breast is still available, get it while it lasts!
