little india recs
Over the last few years, Little India has changed. I notice that often when an Indian store closes, a Pakistani one opens. You are probably right that the clientel has moved to the suburbs.
Las Vegas Style Buffet in Niagara Falls - Too much to ask?
The buffett at the Seneca Casino is the one people are talking about. I have been there more times than I would like to count and it is consistently good. There is a very wide range of food starting with limitless shrimp and crablegs, salad bar, moving on to prime rib and a big selection of American classics. That includes pulled pork, mac and cheese, collard greens, candied yams mashed potatoes and on and on. You also have a Chinese section, and usually either turkey or ham. You then reach the Italian selections with three or four pastas, pizzas, sausages, meatballs and God knows what else! I know I've missed quite a few things( if you can believe it). To end it all, they also have a very large selection of desserts. Not everything is fantastic, but enough of it is to make it worthwhile, considering it's only three blocks past the border and has free valet parking! If you get a Casino card they knock two dollars off the price. Anyway, go and have a good time!!
Goody’s Diner – Finally an Ontario candidate for Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives… and it’s in Scarborough
Decided to treat myself to a burger at Goody's yesterday, but when I got there they had braised shortribs on the menu! I could not resist those, especially on a cold windy day so that was what I ordered. They were fantastic!!!!! Served in a small enameled cassserole, big meaty chunks of shortribs over top of creamy mash potatoes and corn with grilled red and yellow peppers tucked down the side. On top were 3 onion rings. The meat was extrememly tender and tasty, probably the best shortribs I have had.
By the way, I always find the conversations about being located near the jail very funny. There is a very girly bead store right across the road from Goodys which has night classes that let out at 9:00 pm. So man up guys and stop being so proud of yourself for venturing in to such "dangerous territory"!
ISO : Cheesecloth
Do you need larger quantities than you could get at the Dollar store?
Dutchpot on Queen E
I noticed the Dutchpot has opened, has any one been yet? I hope the foods as good as it used to be! I love the roti at Cool Running on Main but I'd like somerhing a bit closer.
Another Young Thailand?
I was driving up Parliament this morning when I noticed Young Thailand had opened. It's on the west side between Gerrard and Carlton, I think where Flamingo used to be. Anybody know anything about this?
Brazilian in Niagara?
If you don't get any recos. for the Brazilian restaurants, I would highly recommend Seneca. They have a very wide variety of items, many of them high end Big salad bar, unlimited shrimp and crab legs and usually prime rib. They also haveall the southern classics, chicken, ribs, collard greens, mac and cheese, sweet potatoes and on and on. Plus a chinese section, and an italian section. Plus deserts!. You see a lot of families coming just for the food, since you can get to the Buffett without actually entering the casino. I don't remember the price, but I know it was cheaper than Niagara, and even less if you get a free Casino card. We started just passing the Niagara casinos because the parking is ridiculously expensive as is the food. If you get there hope you enjoy it.
Casino Niagara
I find it way too expensive for what you get. I didn't think there was very much choice. If you have passports, drive three blocks further across the bridge to Seneca Casino. Free valet and self parking, and a much wider choice at Thunder Falls Buffet. Actually the only thing I liked a Casino Niagara was the Sticky Toffee pudding, and believe me you can't eat your money's worth of that!!!!!!!!!!!!
Niagara Falls, NY - right board?
How about Como's on Pine street in Niagara Falls NY? Very old school Italian, good for lunch. There are a lot of restaurants right by the outlet mall on Military Rd.. but I'm not familiar with them. I must admit, I usually eat at Seneca Casino buffett. Free vvalet parking and good choices. I also would post this on the N.Y. board, specifying the area around Niagara Falls.
Where to buy 'back bacon'?
I think what you are looking for is pea meal bacon. It's similar to Gamon rather than rashers of bacon.
Looking for---- Amaranth grains and sour cabbage
Just spoke to my friend. The cabbage is indeed for cabbage rolls. The leaves come vacuum packed in liquid, and it is pretty much a whole head of cabbage. My friend is fron Saskatchewan and apparently this is quite readily available out there!
Looking for---- Amaranth grains and sour cabbage
Thanks for your responses. I will check on the sour cabbage. I'm pretty sure it's for his family recipe for cabbage rolls, but I will check to be sure.
Looking for---- Amaranth grains and sour cabbage
Wanted to correct a possibly wrong impression! These items don't have to be found in my area, just letting you know where I am located. I will travel somewhat.
Looking for---- Amaranth grains and sour cabbage
Told a friend I would find these things for him, so, has anyone seen Amaranth around?Where in central east Toronto would I find it (Leslirville to be exact) Also he is looking for sour cabbage for an old family recipe. Any ideas?
Ace Baguettes - bake at home
Actually, the best deal is at the Weston Bakery outlets. I can't remember the price but it's way below Costco's
Ugli fruit
I guess it depends on what island you're on, Ugli fruit in Greneda is definitely the same as Pomelo! It does not have the bitterness of a grapefruit, but it also is nothing like tangerine. It has the size and colour of grapefruit, but elongated and somewhat pointy at one end. It also has quite a thick skin and can be segmented. I can't eat the membrane or the pith, but I love the fruit anyway!!
Ugli fruit
Try any Chinese grocerie stores you may have in Kingston. The Pomelo's they sell are the same as the Ugli fruit I used to get in Grenada. They also seem to be available most of the year.
FRESH DONUTS IN TORONTO
The thought of the Donut Factory being reviewed is almost more than I can deal with!!!!!!!!!!!!

Black Forest Cake
I'm in charge of finding a Black Forest cake for a friends birthday. Any suggestions about where a really good one is to be found? I will consider most any area to get to if it's really great cake.
ISO Downtown cheap-but-tasty dim sum restaurant with carts
I was at Pearl Court in east Chinatown a few months ago for Dim Sum. It actually was much bettter than it had been for a while! Try it. I haven't been to the Grannd for a long time, but it always looked so dreary and not quite clean. I will definitely go back to Pearl Court.
Ribs again
At the risk of starting a flame-out, what's the current thought about where to go for Ribs. Thats what a friend wants for his birthday dinner, so I thought I'ld ask. Any suggestions?
Any breakfast places in Toronto that make HOMEMADE PANCAKES from scratch?
I agree with the Ontario Bistro suggestion. They make great pancakes , actually their breakfasts are thr best!! Lately I've been having a bowl of yougurt with fresh fruit, some granola and a drizzle of honey. YUM. Friendly service and great food!!!

Indian food on Gerrard Street - where to start?
Personally I like Regency on Gerrard although it has it's critics. We go for the buffett. I'm not an expert in that cuisine, but I find that I can try a variety of things and decide what I like. We use to get excellent Dosa's at Siddartha vegetarian restaurant, but it has closed. Dosa's are apparently a South Indian dish and not everyone does them. Lahore Tikka House and most of the new restaurants are Pakistani and seem not to serve the same dishes. Hope you find something you like.
New burger joint opening at Jones and Gerrard
What is the language barrier here that is causing the problem?
Need take out recommendations in the South Riverdale area.
Tommaso's Trattoria on Eastern Just east of Broadview. Very good Italian food. They do a lot of takeout. It's at 400 Eastern ave. 416-466-0988

Where to go for large takeout order of dim sum and whole roasted pig downtown?
If you want to stay in the same neighourhood as Ka KA Lucky for convenience, what about Pearl Court for the Dim Sum? IT's just around the corner on Gerrard east of Broadview. I have to admit to not being there for DIm Sum for a while so I don't know what the quality is like these days. Also, there are a few bakeries there in case you wanted to pick up some sweets.
Deep Blue Fish and Chips?
I did not add that link. The place I'm writing about is on Broadview just below Danforth where Deep Blue was!
Deep Blue Fish and Chips?
It has been closed long enough that there's a new restaurant in it's place. I think the new place is called Peter's Place. I don't remember how many restaurants have opened and closed in that location!!!
Is anyone eating steak at the Tulip on Queen?
Are you really recommending that a vegetarian use the blood from a steak as her spaghetti sauce? Depending on how strict she is, I would think there would be other things on the menu she could eat.
New burger joint opening at Jones and Gerrard
Apparently, Ted, the original owner of Joy Bistro is opening it. He has bought the building as usual, but I don't know what else he has planned. Remember Joy Bisto did start off well, until the neighbourhood got so trendy. It will be interesting to see how this goes!
