Thanks 1Buckeye! Good to read your recommendation as a Texan transplant. These college visits are wonderful but too short to really get the true flavor of the locale. Read the other day that Charlottesville and GreenBriar(?) were very nice places to live. The topic was 10 great college towns to live in. Not necessarily college living but non-collegiate residents.

Thanks! Will look up Bizou. We tend to favor diners (of course being from NJ, diner heaven). I know our daughter is in search of great hush puppies...go figure!

New Branchburg (Somerset County) Indian: Masala Art--any early reports?

One of the better local Indian restaurants. The service is friendly and very helpful. We have dined in and taken out. I am a fan of lamb and they do it so well regardless of which lamb dish. They have the most moist and tasteful tandoori chicken around! My children always order tandoori chicken and they even noticed that it was tasty and moist here! Well worth a try and returning!!

Anything But Serene to One's Taste Buds - Explosion of Deliciousness!

I am envious that you had dinner at TSC! Thank you for including a copy of the dinner menu. The offerings all sound so-o-o-o-o-o yummy. Did anyone in your party try the lobster and shrimp pot pie?

Anything But Serene to One's Taste Buds - Explosion of Deliciousness!

Sorry for misleading, The Serenity Cafe (TSC) is not Thai. I would say it is basically American fusion. After all, America is the incorporation of many cultures, so is the offering at TSC. Gary is the owner-chef. It is my understanding that he was the sous chef for Jeffries (now closed, was also located in Toms RIver). I never had the opportunity to dine at Jeffries, but friends claim it was another great spot. TSC serves lunch and dinner and does catering. One can order complete dinner packages or platters for Christmas with pick up on Dec 24th. Again, wish I lived closer. May have to have my husband do a "run" one day for a special occasion.

The menu serves up selections of roasted tenderloin or prime ribs of beef, crab cakes, salmon, shrimp dishes, vegans, etc. The sauces add to the offering. It was my first time but wanted to bring it to Chowhounders' attention.

Anything But Serene to One's Taste Buds - Explosion of Deliciousness!

Wished we lived closer to Toms River, NJ so that we can return frequently for meals at The Serenity Cafe (TSC)! "Who'd a thunk" ??!! Went to TSC this past Thursday with 7 other people and we all had different selections, from seafood to beef to vegan dishes. There was nothing left on the plates, and let me confirm, there was enough to take home but we all consciously devoured our respective lunches. Oh wait, we also found room to order dessert, too! And not just any dessert, but incredible creations that just played with one's taste buds. I am salivating remembering that lunch. The service was friendly and informative. They did not try to rush the patrons through the meal, but appeared to encourage one to sit back and enjoy the gourmet experience. I ordered the Coconut Shrimp in Tropical Mango Sauce. Subconsciously, I was expecting heavily breaded small fried shrimp that would be smothered in a sweet sauce. HELLO! My taste buds were awakened to lightly breaded shrimp with that wonderful fusion of the tropics (coconut and mango) taste. Wow, the shrimp to bread crumb ratio was definitely in favor of the shrimp. I even shared half with my husband who devoured his Thai seared tuna. Is it possible to dine out while on diets??!! Well, if one goes to The Serenity Cafe, one can. Unique selections, incredible combinations, and reasonable prices for gastronomical creations...what a terrific find in Toms River!!! Something good from the Jersey Shore!

The Serenity Cafe is located in a strip mall, but don't let that throw you. Walk through the door you enter a warm and inviting dining room. We were there for lunch and it was light and inviting. I imagine dinner would be just as warm and inviting...maybe even romantic. Reservations would be a wise thing for lunch and dinner or prepare to wait. But worth it!

Nom Wah Tea Parlor – Surprisingly Good Dim Sum at One of Chinatown’s Oldest Restaurants

Our parents used to take us to Nom Wah but we never ate there, only purchased boxes of delicious almond cookies. Years later, as an adult, I wonder if my parents avoided eating there because of the fast-paced mahjong tiles clacking nearby. Recently walked by and saw that it was still there and even asked my sister if it could have survived all these years just selling cookies? When she visits from Kansas next, we will definitely try it. I had lived in HK as an ex-pat and had an opportunity to try some incredible dim sum, both "local" and "high end"...so am looking forward to trying Nom Wah! Thank you, Lau! By any chance, has anyone tried the hand pulled noodles place located at 1 Doyers St?

Boston Chinatown: Best Chinese restaurant for food, value and service

Thanks to all for the responses. My inquiry arose after reading about the various restaurants on their respective web sites and reading the reviews. We did go to Gourmet Dumpling Cafe at 52 Beach St. There was the expected 20-30 minute wait. But once seated, friendly wait staff served us and the selection reminded me of the Chinatown restaurants in NYC when I was growing up...not westernized Chinese food, but delicious, tasty food my mom would have enjoyed!!! We had sesame chicken that was so-o-o-o tender and delicious, mango chicken that was to die for, real yummy pork and crab dumplings, and pigs feet in noodle soup that knocked my socks off!!

Boston Chinatown: Best Chinese restaurant for food, value and service

Is there such an animal in Boston Chinatown? Most of what I have read identifies good food with lousy service or fair service with lousy food or lousy service, fair food with a high price tag! HELP!!!

Fusion (New Restaurant) in Flemington, NJ

Went by last week and saw the space for rent. Found out that it closed its doors at the end of Dec 2010. Have eaten there three times; once within opening week when the service was impeccable and the food outstanding; returned several months later and found the same. The last time I was there was 2 years ago and the portion size had gotten smaller while the prices went up. The wait time for the food was also very long. There were four of us and when our order arrived, we couldn't remember who ordered what.

Trader Joe's - I don't get it.

I concur with the majority of the opinions regarding TJ's...more hype than anything else. I still prefer to find a well stocked Asian food market where the produce and prices are consistently good! If one is looking for organically grown /produced, go to WF or a local natural grocers!

Chinese New Year Pastries

I have found a great recipe for the deep fried sesame seed balls (filled with chopped coconut, peanuts and sugar or red bean paste or my Dad's peanut butter/crunchy, of course). I am reaching out to find out if anyone has the recipe for its savory counterpart: deep fried crescent shaped pastry filled with a mixture of cooked salted port, dried shrimp, black mushroom, and bamboo shoots. We called them "taydoi".

Zhongzi/Joongs From Grand Street Lady w/ Pictures. Not Mei Mei, But Still Good

Sorry for the absence of a response until now. The lady was on Grand near Mott, but not on the corner. She was located in a shaded doorway along Grand. She also had a colleague on Grand but closer to Canal. My sister and I had to walk up and down Grand and Mott to locate her. Worth the effort. Have not been in Chinatown since the summer, so do not know if she is present during the winter.

Theater District Restaurant to take a vegetarian to?

Davrish, Mediterranean/Greek/Turkey on 47th near 7th Ave. We went there last month for their brunch buffet and found it reasonably priced, delicious, filling, and they were able to accomodate a special diet in our group. Nice atmosphere (locals and tourists) and attentative waitstaff.

Zhongzi/Joongs From Grand Street Lady w/ Pictures. Not Mei Mei, But Still Good

Wanted to provide an update on the jong lady. Yes, she is now located in that section of Little Italy that has been taken over by CHinatown. The jongs were $1.50 each, big and delicious but missing the egg. Like everything else, the price has gone up and the filling has gotten less. Still a good buy!!!!

Zhongzi/Joongs From Grand Street Lady w/ Pictures. Not Mei Mei, But Still Good

Has anyone seen this nice jong master since Feb 18 and where? Is this the lady who used to sell from the church that has since been converted to a senior citizen center and Chinatown museum off a Mott?

Eating her jongs bought back memories of my childhood when my mother and her friends would make them during the weekend at our home. How I miss those times and how my tastebuds miss those jongs. My sister and I have tried to make them and it is very time consuming but rewarding. I would still like to purchase them from this lady though. She was better than Mei Mei!!
