BlueHerons's Profile
Bourbon House, Mothers, Deanies, etc
Coops Place was both, dirty and a great atmosphere.
As the wife of a long time restauranteur, I know what I'm looking at. Old oil, horribly dirty bar, floors, tchotckes, etc. The atmosphere was great because the staff and the patrons were so friendly and the music was great. Dark bars have nothing to do with gross as I too enjoy a dark bar.
On the flip side, the oil at Deanies was very clean. It just has that smell.
It was all I could do to get this group to Mothers. Would have loved to have hit up Parkway or Johnnies. Only my son and I went to Coops Place.
Yes, I would absolutely go to Coops again.

Bourbon House, Mothers, Deanies, etc
Thanks to everyone that gave me great advice last week on my question for a group of twelve.
Day One: Mothers & Coops.
At Coops Place, we ate what was recommended by the bartender, gumbo, ettouffee, both excellent. Gross interior, and I am far from a prude but the food more than made up for this. Great place, great atmosphere.
We had lunch at Mothers and I got the oyster po'boy which was excellent and my son ate the crawfish ettouffee. Both outstanding. The others in our party did not enjoy the ham and debris po'boys. Their Bloody Marys are also excellent. I think the trip at Mothers is to get what they are famous for.
Day Two; Gordon Biersch and NO Greek Festival.
Lunch at Gordon Biersch outside was really good. I've eaten at GB in other cities and it is a great chain. Had a bacon cheeseburger and regular fries. The Garlic fries are too much.
New Orleans Greek Festival; OMG omg omg the best Gyro I've ever eaten. We went to the Greek Festival (on Bayou St. John) to run the NOTC Greek Festival 5K and then to chow down on Greek food and Abita Beer. They cooked the lamb whole on the spit, pulled it off, piled it on a grilled pita with Greek yogurt and sweet geezus it was one of the best things I've ever eaten.
Day Three; Daisy Dukes and Boubon House.
Daisy Dukes for lunch and had another oyster po'boy. Excellent.
This was the night our now group of 17 went to Bourbon House for dinner and it was a great experience. Starting with our reservation which was originally for 12 and daily grew to 17. We all sat at one table on one of the indoor balconies with an excellent view of the restaurant, Bourbon Street, and the line at ACME next door. I had the BBQ shrimp and let me tell you, I wanted to put my face in the plate. It was a large amount of shrimp and a shortbread biscuit. Service was outstanding. Highly recommend.
Day Four: Cafe du Monde and Deanies Seafood.
This is pretty simple, beignets and coffee at Cafe Du Monde and fried seafood at Deanies. Yes, I got the oysters.
I know this review isn't as extensive as others but I wanted to head back and at least mention where I had been. I didn't pay attention to anyone elses meal because I was too interested in the company I was with.
I think the trick to New Orleans is to order what the restaurant is famous for and stay away from the fly by night traps.

Dress code guidance, please
I think there is a big difference between jeans and sneakers and jeans, heels, and a really dressy top.
Moderately Priced, Group of Twelve
Thanks everyone. I received some bad advice on the Napoleon House and they do serve dinner Friday and Saturday.

Moderately Priced, Group of Twelve
I am looking for something moderately priced ($15-$20 entrees) for a group of 12 people who would feel right at home at Margaritaville. I'm afraid if I don't find something, we'll end up at Margaritaville (not slamming the restaurant, I have one where I live in Myrtle Beach).
This would be for Saturday night May 28th. It is a combined birthday dinner.

Restaurant plans in Charleston and Savannah; How should I change my "eating itinerary?"
Poogan's for brunch only.
Hank's for seafood.
Sunday Brunch - casual dress - Charleston or Folly Island, SC
I eat Sunday Brunch in Charleston about once a month and my favorite two spots are Poogan's Porch and Jestine's Kitchen.
Casual is fine in both places and I've been even less casual than that.

"Destination" Restaurants in the Southeast?
I would definitely say SeeWee in Awendaw/McClellanville, SC. It is a seafood meat and three which is indigenous to the south specifically.
List of things to eat/food experiences to have in South Carolina
I'm a big fan of the Boone Hall oyster festival. Usually the last Sunday in January.
Yes, it is crowded but go early and bring your oyster knife and a chair.

We call it Chicken Bog further up the SC Coast. As far as cookbooks, get a copy of Charleston Reciepts. It is the oldest Junior League cookbook in the nation.
Red Velvet Cake - Charleston, SC
Any of the bakeries in the local grocery stores will be able to make you a red velvet cake.
Fleet Landing Charleston SC
My personal experience is that Fleet Landing has lousy food. I've tried it three times and all three were a bust.

"Sexiest" restaurants on South Beach?
I like Tantra and don't think it is forced.
That said, Wish and BED are the two things that come to mind.
Litchfield/Pawleys - What's new and what's still great?
Bistro 217
Chive Blossom
Bove
Franks
Landolfis
I don't believe Chef Orobosa has re-opened as of yet.

Sticky Fingers BBQ............
I think it is probably a little better than eating ribs at Applebees or Outback Steakhouse.
For a chain as large as they are, I think they do okay.
Not everyone has a Sweatmans in their back yard.
Restaurants for a Sat. nite in Charleston with no reservations needed??
You can usually eat dinner at any of the good restaurants bars without a reservation. I know we have done this at Penninsula Grill on many occasions as well as at Hanks with no problems.
You may have a bit of a wait for a bar stool on Saturday night.
Broward - All you can eat sushi
Sunday brunch at Nikki Beach is the only thing I can think of that is good.
What are Miami's must-try restaurants and foods?
I love the view at Smith & Wollensky but they do not offer a happy hour at the South Beach location and it is very expensive. Average wine runs about $17 a glass and bottles start at about $60 before tax and tip.
When we go and try to be a little frugal (you'll find that is actually joke), we eat our largest meal of the day for lunch and do drinks and appetizers for dinner.

Wanna eat like a local
Here is my list.
Bistro Mezzoluna
Coco Asian
Southport Raw Bar
Aruba (I've had excellent meals here and they have an outstanding happy hour on Friday night, roast an entire pig and it is free)
Charley's Crab
Season 52
Big City Tavern
Cafe Martorano
The Floridian
Le Tub
Rustic Inn
I think what is so surprising to me is that places like Charley's Crab and Aruba usually have crappy food because they have the outstanding water view (CC ICW and Aruba is on the Atlantic) but they have excellent food.

Food Wine Festival in Myrtle Beach in May
Save your money and drive to Charleston for their F&W festival.
Looking at participating restaurants, Greg Norman's isn't participating and they the festival is showcasing their chef.
Also, most of the restaurants are owned by either the Brittain family or Divine Dining who now owns Divine Dining.
Foodies next rec (Myrtle Beach)
Prossers is the only buffet I'll eat at and it is excellent.
Do not miss and wear your big pants. I can promise you will grossly overeat.
Charleston's Best Restaurants for NYC Foodies?
Current Gullah food is a joke. Traditionally the slaves were given the leftover parts of the animal after the slaughter so along with abundant seafood, as much rice as the slaves wanted, and pig brains, intenstines, feet, etc made up the Gullah diet. Chitlins smell vile when cooking.
Gullah Cuisine is a marketing ploy to get people to think they are eating something unique when all it is is a southern meat and three.
Jestine's Kitchen has better fried chicken.

I love Maurice's BBQ! My favorite in the state!
Lizzard's Thicket has always been my favorite for Sunday-after-church.
Love Motor Supply Company.
Myrtle Beach update help needed! May visit looming....Name your 5 favorite places!
When Wallace Lee died, the family sold the restaurant. Think it has been about ten years ago.
Not a fan of Collectors Cafe.
The best Thai is The Blue Elephant. The owner is a Thai MD, Dr. Paul. Make reservations as they only have a few tables and will turn you down if they are too busy and too busy is five tables. Weirdly it is in the only strip mall in Murrells Inlet.http://www.blueelephantthai.com/
E Noodle is also excellent Asian and it is in Myrtle Beach.http://www.enoodlesmb.com/
Love Salt Creek Cafe.
Will not eat at Biminis since Rick passed. Whomever owns it now does not understand the concept of soap and water. It is nasty.
Mr. Fish is the best seafood on the beach. http://www.mrfish.com/

Charleston before the Bridge Run
danna, as a runner with about twenty marathons under my belt, let me just say that carb loading stuff is more old wives tale. Really a couple of beers and you are set.
That said, downtown will be a madhouse the weekend of the run. Really packed and miserable.
My suggestion would be just to head over to Poes for a burger and a couple of beers.
That's where we'll be:)
