Tra Di Noi or Emilia's? Best cake bakery on Arthur Ave?

Thanks, JohnAM. Had a luscious fresh strawberry, yellow cake and whipped cream birthday cake specially made at Artuso's and it was delicious! I appreciate your help.
Also, we ate at Tra di Noi. The food was good and fresh but certainly not amazing. $11.95 for an iceberg lettuce salad is a turn off, even for two people. Fried calamari appetizer very skimpy at $12.95. And beware -- the blackboard specials are much higher priced than the regular menu, and if you don't ask, you will surprised as I was to find the simply grilled fish (nicely done) was $25.95. We had a lovely time, the service was nice, but I doubt we will return.
Thrilled by the ravioli we purchased for the next night's dinner at Borgatti's, as well as the Teitel Bros. amazing hunk of parmesean and the sweet and delicate Casa Della Mozzarella mozzarella.
All in all, a great trip. Thanks for the help.

Tra Di Noi or Emilia's? Best cake bakery on Arthur Ave?

I live on the Upper West Side in Manhattan, and have fallen in love with Arthur Ave.! Teitel Brothers, Casa di Mozzarella and Borgatti's are making me forget about my longings for DiPaola (sorry Luigi and Salvatore).
For my husband's birthday Saturday night -- Tra di Noi or Emilia's (didn't like Roberto's, sorry)?
I'd like to bring my own cake for dessert -- who has the best Italian Cheesecake or Strawberry Shortcake? (I will do De Lillo if that is the consensus, but was not impressed with their capuccino a month ago, and took that as a bad sign.)
Thanks so much for your help!

Made late reservations for an Upper West Side Restaurant Week birthday dinner on Friday night for 4, came up with these two possiibilities.
Anyone tried either of these restaurants lately? Many thanks for your experience and/or advice!

Midtown Dining on a budget? Help!

Thanks to everyone for the great suggestions. Arriving late, my friend traveled to the Upper West Side (where I live) and we went to Pasha for Turkish food. I am a Pasha fan not just for the food, but because the tables are placed far enough apart to hear one's dining companions speak, there is no piped-in soundtrack, and a lovely skylight overhead in the dining room!

I really appreciate Chowhounders' responses to my challenging inquiry! If I am ever in midtown for dinner, now I will know what to try. Many thanks.

Midtown Dining on a budget? Help!

Great suggestion! Not sure we can make the earlier time, but a wonderful idea. I'll take a look at the $35.00 menu. Many thanks.

Midtown Dining on a budget? Help!

Thank you so much, Kathryn. I'll check it out. Any other recommendations, perhaps not Chinese? (Whoops, sorry, I know I said "any cuisine" but eat far too much Chinese take-out at home to feel happy about that choice).
Maybe I am on an impossible quest?

Midtown Dining on a budget? Help!

A good friend staying at the Warwick (56th btwn 5th and 6th) and we are seeking a spot for dinner in walking distance from her hotel this Friday night. In search of moderately priced (under $50pp inclusive) dinner nearby that will not disappoint, hopefully more than that. Any cuisine is possible.

40th birthday celebration?

You are certainly right! I mentioned The Modern because I think that is just about the right tone, ambience, etc. I don't think they are looking for anything too casual. Please let me know what else comes to your mind, 280 Ninth.

40th birthday celebration?

Dear Chowhounders,
Approximately 8 - 10 friends are gathering from across the oceans and the country to celebrate a dear friend's 40th in February. Part of her birthday surprise is that she is being transported from Ireland to New York for the fete. As the New York friend, I am supposed to come up with some dining choices, and turn to you for help (I will give credit where due). The last dinner she and her girlfriend had and loved in New York was at The Modern. So far, I've suggested Eleven Madison Park, Gramercy Tavern and Del Posto. I think Le Bernadin may be too seafood specific for the group. I would love to know what you think of those, and any other suggestions that come to mind... What do you think? Many thanks!

65th birthday dinner for six?

My friend wanted Union Square for her big birthday -- we called the first morning the reservations opened for the date in question, but alas! shut out! We are on the waiting list there, but need alternatives. Help? Price range: around $100/person all inclusive tops. Food: no particular type of cuisine, anything great, probably leans towards Italian if anything. Ambiance: A space where conversation is possible -- it will be a table of folks that like to talk. Also, must have windows (no underground a la "81"). Would prefer the west side, up or downtown, but will travel for sure. Right now, our backup reservation is at Beacon which one of the crowd recommended, but after reading this board, I'm scared...
Any suggestions? Many thanks.
