Per Se Lunch Res . . . Any Tips?

Is it very very difficult to get a lunch res at Per Se?

Four of us are planning a trip to NY in mid-February to celebrate 65th birthdays. We want to go to Per Se for lunch (dinner would be too much food).

Since we already have our flights I'm nervous about not getting a res. Is it a little easier to get a lunch res than a dinner res?

Manhattan Babka Survey

My original post was a long time ago! Thanks for keeping this alive, BKLYNGIRLRD! BTW about a year ago I did get some Greenberg babka by mail to give as gifts. The quality of the babka was embarrassing. And WG's service is abysmal. I'm done with WG. Interested to try Fairway's babka. Ess gezunterheit!

Breakfast on Monday in Midtown

Aargh. We have to meet friends on Monday for breakfast in midtown, specifically, between 39th and mid 50's, and east/west not more than 3 or so blocks from Fifth. Need recommendation for nice breakfast spot.

Brooklyn Pizza Survey — Cut Short

I had hoped to go to at least 3 or 4 or 5 places for pizza during my week in Brooklyn. But I got busy with work so the Survey got off to a late start.

On Thursday I went to Difara. It's cool that the old guy is there making the pizza, but wrt the pizza all I can say is . . . huh? I don't get it.

Last night I got a pie at Lucali's and I have declared the Survey done, over, it's not necessary to trek around in the windy cold any longer searching for pizza — winner is Lucali's, it's the best pizza ever for my money and my taste. And, yes, I had it with the artichokes (and onion and garlic).

Best Apple Sauce for Latkes

What is the best supermarket / health food store brand of apple sauce — for latkes?

Latkes and . . . ?

Our Hanukah Party menu:

• big salad
• chicken noodle soup
• latkes
• dessert (meringue cookies and chocolate sorbet)

Question: what to put on the plate in addition to the latkes. It's kind of a sad plate if it's just latkes alone. I can't think of anything (not meat or poultry). Any ideas?

Thank you.

Manhattan Babka Survey

I usually give to my favorite customers chocolate babka or chocolate coffee cake from NY at December holiday time. I began years ago giving Green's or Zabars chocolate babka.

The past 2 or 3 years I have given Delancey Desserts Russian coffee cake.

Everyone is always thrilled with the gift.

I am tempted to give this year Wm. Greenberg's chocolate babka. I haven't had it but I've had enough of WG's stuff to know he is an ace.

My question is . . . is Wm. Greenberg's chocolate (or cinnamon) babka really good enough to spend $33 for two of them plus a hugely inflated shipping fee (I live in Florida)? I am happy to do it if the product is over the top. Is Greenberg's babka that good?

Brooklyn Pizza Survey

I am house sitting in Red Hook in December for a week. I've never spent much time in Brooklyn so I am very excited. I plan to conduct a Brooklyn Pizza Survey.

My first two destinations will be Di Fara Pizza and Lucali. What should be #3?

help me choose! - Motorino, Keste, Lucali

I too vote for Co. over Motorino and Keste.

The pizza at Motorino and Keste is too gloppy for my taste.

Visiting Miami Beach -- what's best food to bring home?

Yes, we too are big fans of TooJay's.

Just checking if there is anything else we should look for. I've always heard the "appetizing" in south Florida is excellent, didn't want to miss out.

Also, NB, doesn't have to be "Jewish-style" it could be any cuisine, anything at all so long as it's special!

Thanks, smartie.

Visiting Miami Beach -- what's best food to bring home?

We are coming down to Miami Beach this weekend for a wedding. Any suggestions for good local food to bring home to Orlando?

When I go to NY I bring back top notch rugelach, babka, whitefish salad, Nova, herring, scallion cream cheese, bagels, bialys, baked goods from Bouchon.

So, show me what you got Miami. What food should I look for?

Thanks.

Best of the "nouveau" pizza places- Keste, Co., Motorino, etc.?

I vote for Co.

I do not like Motor at all. Too much puddle of sauce in the middle of the pie. Too wet. And the red sauce is too acid.

Haven't tried Keste.

Locanda Verde -- WOW

I went back to Locanda Verde tonight. It was just as WOW as last week, especially the ricotta and the duck breast. And . . . here I will eat a big serving of crow -- our waitress in the front room was superb.

Locanda Verde -- WOW

So last night the wife and I were walking around Tribeca. We'd flown up from home (Fla.) earlier in the day. We were looking at the menu posted out front of Bar Artisanal. Guy with a dog walks up to us and says this place is good, but the best spot in neighborhood is Locanda Verde.

I have been seeing Bar Artisanal in the press for years so I wanted to try it. We went in for a drink and a flatbread. The whole experience was mediocre.

We went to Locanda Verde. We had a couple of drinks at the bar and got a table after 45 or so pleasant minutes.

WOW -- LV now replaces Balthazar as our go-to place when we come to NY. What made a huge difference was the fresh air. All the huge windows were open to the sidewalk. It was cool. We were sitting on the west side basking in the setting sun over NJ. It wasn't so loud as we had read (prob because of the open windows). It wasn't so crowded as we had read (prob because of the sidewalk seating). Billion dollar setting, ambience, conviviality.

Food was totally outstanding: nuts at bar, filleted sardines, lamb pasta, homemade duck sausage pasta, sorbet.

Bartenders were okay. Waiter was pretty lame. And, yes, it is annoying to insist that we order everything at once. To counteract this next time will delay and delay ordering.

Can't wait to go back!

What food from Boston area should I bring home to Florida

When I am in New York I usually bring home stuff from Zabars: nova, cream cheese, white fish salad, herring, babka. What is the corresponding good stuff in Boston which I should bring home? I am coming up in a couple of weeks. Doesn't have to be fish, etc. -- anything which is special in your area. Thanks!

Lunch by the MET

Hey it's an upscale neighborhood, relax and splurge a little and enjoy. You can eat popcorn the next day if you feel like you've got to even it out.

I love E.A.T. It's rather overpriced but every dish I've ever had there is excellent, and they've even improved the bread.

Popcorn & Truffle Oil & Truffle Salt

I've recently started making popcorn. Today I flavored it with butter, white truffle oil, parmesan, salt.

My friend has been urging me to switch from salt to truffle salt.

My question is: the truffle oil I use is white truffle oil. The truffle salt I see in the store is black truffle salt. Is there a contraindication or is it a-okay to use white truffle oil with black truffle salt.

Also . . . anyone have other rockin' ideas for flavoring popcorn?

Did what's-his-name (the guy who used to have the pizzeria in the 12th Street store Motorino is now in) have a puddle in the middle of his pies?

Duck Confit at Balthazar

I had the Duck Confit at Balthazar in February. I was blown away. Best I've ever had.

I order the DC there every couple of years. It has always been excellent, but this time it was better still.

Anybody have a clue what they might be doing. I have their cookbook so I have the recipe, but mine surely doesn't taste like theirs.

I get my duck legs from Hudson Valley Foie Gras. Balthazar's duck legs seems larger than that of HVFG and too D'Artagnan. Anybody know where Balthazar gets its duck legs?

Pizza at Motorino

Motorino Margherita: Is it deliberate, the puddle of sauce (which makes the middle of the pie so soggy)? Went there last Wednesday for the first time. I was quite disappointed. Also, the beet salad was boring, too many beets, no subtly, not enough other stuff going on.

Espresso at Joe

Yes, Joe's espresso was bitter in a (to me) toxic way I've never experienced before. I can see that maybe this sort of espresso roast works in a drink with a lot of milk. But do people really drink this type of espresso straight for pleasure? Okay, I get it -- I don't like American-style espresso roast. I love a good Italian-style espresso. Now I understand, got it, thanks.

Espresso at Joe

I had the espresso at Joe (the one on Waverly) last Wednesday (the day it was rated "outstanding" in NYT). I thought the espresso was the worst I have ever drunk. Worst. I don't get it. Is there something wrong with me?
