Best dairy-free chocolate chips?
also if u live in the metroNY area...I had found parve choc chips at Fairway-in the organic section. Granted this was a while ago so they may no longer carry them (or they also may have crossed over into dairy!) They also were somewhat pricey-compared to TJ's. But now that I'm desperate, I may need to go back to them.
Kosh in Stamford, Connecticut
Wondering if anyone has been there in the last couple of months? Any updates/improvements/downgrades? Thinking of going on a Sunday w/mixed crowd of observant and non-observant ppl...
thnx!
Applesauce - make your own and kick your latkes onto a higher madrega [moved from Kosher board]
Agree 101% with u, having grown up w/homemade applesauce, I can never stomach the jarred stuff, even the unsweetened kind! Just to add 1 additional plus of making homemade applesauce, it freezes really well!
Pareve Chocolate Babka (not chocolate challah)
agree re Gracefully...I'm def not a very price aware person-usually if I see it and need/want it, just buy it. But I was walking by WEA one nite, late, hungry and stressed out so went in. Also was happy that they had a lot of heckshered food but thought they're prices were astronomical. Picked up a stonyfield yougurt and had sticker shock. Was appx $1.50 more than Fairway! Can't imagine they'll manage to stay in business that long-altho' for ppl who live in the new(ish) bldgs on WEA & 60-64th St, I guess it's a choice btwn this place and Western Beef.
I need NYC help please
Koshertopia just posted that Coffee Bean & Tea will be opening in Aug at Bdway & 39th St! I've never been to their LA locations but believe they have lite (dairy) fare so that may be an option for when u get off the bus.
Cooking Shoulder London Broil
Help! Thought I was going to broil a piece of "London Broil"...but now that I've opened the pkg I see it's 2 thick pieces (about 4"), each about 1-1/2lbs...so how should I cook it? Bake it? At what temp & for how long? (Right now it's marinating.)
Thanks!
New York for Shabbat
Believe Mike's Bistro was talking about offering prepaid shabbat meals...a)not sure if they are b)if it's only when they're already open for a private party.
Rytown Hilton? Stamford Hilton? Passover program
(It's that time of the year!) Wondering if any chowhounders had opinions re Ryetown Hilton (LeisureTime Tours)? Stamford Hilton (Gateways)? Particularly interested in food (variety, quality, etc), religious observance level, quality of chol hamoed activities.
Thanks!
riverdelight-Riverdale, NY...reviews?
Thinking of Riverdelight in Riverdale for Mother's Day...wondering if anybody had any feedback (never been there before)-food, ambiance, prices?
thanks!
Frozen Yogurt
There's also Scream gelato on the UWS and in Madame Tussaud museum...both under Rabbi Mehlman's (Ohav Shalom on W. 84th St ) supervision
Substitution for Cream of Mushroom soup in meat dishes?
Seem to coming across many (non kosher) chicken recipes that call for cream of mushroom soup...does anyone have any good substitutions? Would prefer not to use non-dairy creamer (for health reasons)...but think cooking mushrooms in soy/rice milks wld be too "liquidy"
TIA
has anyone used the catering from josh's place/above and beyond?
I recently attended a sheva brachot that was catered by them...and the food and service was excellent. Nice presentation, tasty food.
London Broil cooked day ahead?
Is London Broil good cooked a day ahead? (Want to make it and serve it-warmed up-the next day for lunch.) I don't have much experience cooking meats so hoping my fellow foodies can help! Also if anyone has a really good recipe, wld love the suggestions!
Thanks!
Mendy's Midtown

Diamond Dairy (NY) Closed?
Believe for the past week Diamond Dairy (in NYC Diamond District) has been closed. Rumor is that it's closed for good. Anyone know if that is true?
While it certainly wasn't fine dining, it did have its specialities (blintzes, potato pancakes!) and was good for a quick & inexpensive lunch,
Kosher Products at Costco in Manhattan?
agree it is impressive that they're not charging a premium in Manhattan-altho' most Manhattan residents will have to take a cab home w/all the packages! And if you're lucky enough to have a car in Manhattan, I heard they're charging for parking! Supposedly the charge is being levied by the bldg landlord, not Costco...but maybe if there's enough complaints, Costco will reimburse the parking fees.
Kosher Products at Costco in Manhattan?
Hi! Wondering if any Costco members had checked out the new Costco in Manhattan (116th St & 1st Ave) and what kosher products they have. I've seen and heard about the one in the 5 towns-know they have meat, poultry, baked goods, etc. Wondering if there's any chance the Manhattan one will carry similar items.
Reviews of Passover Hotel Programs?
kf- wondering why yr thinking of straying from Ocean Place...my family are also nevele alum (or shld I say survivors!)...and we've gone to a couple of different places since (mendy vim's program, hudson valley/granit) and haven't been thrilled w/any them. so we were thinking of ocean place...any feedback u cld give wld be appreciated!
Need an under $25 dinner in Manhattan for group of 8 with one kosher member
Also would suggest Cafe U....I think they would also have vegetarian options (u can prob see their menu online), nice decor, etc. It's on the Upper East side-think 98th & Lex. Another possibility is Mike's Bistro & Pizzaria-but not sure of the vegetarian options (u can def see that menu online). It's on the Upper West side, appx 93rd & Amst
Fresh Tuna
Don't know yr standards re fish & kashrut, but I'd try Fairway or Citerella. (THINK fairway is under R. Marmelstein)
MimicCreme
Which health food store on Staten Island sells it? This product sounds really interesting...maybe I'll corral a coworker who lives on SI to pick it up for me!
Thanks.
Doral Arrowwood vs Crowne Plaza WP brunch?
Which brunch is better, Doral/Arrowwood in Rye Brook or Crowne Plaza in White Plains?
Thanks!
Nice Manhattan Mother's Day Brunch?
Looking for a place for group of 10...most not kosher observers for brunch in NYC. Looking to spend $20-30 per person. Anyone have suggestions?
Thanks!
Mother's Day Brunch in White Plains area?
Thanks...that's a little pricier than we were hoping for, but I'll check it out.
Also got suggestions of Doral Arrowwood (Rye Brook) and Crowne Plaza who are both offering brunches for around $40...anyone have feedback on either of these places?
Thanks
Mother's Day Brunch in White Plains area?
Looking for restaurant w/good brunch offering for Mother's Day...looking for place in the greater White Plains area.
Any suggestions wld be appreciated!
Any restaurants in Westchester/Bronx/Lower Ct?
Looking for a place for the family to get together for Mother's Day...so want somethign fairly nice (not a pizza or bagel place). We're coming from Ct, NJ and NY so somewhere in Westchester, Lower Fairfield county or the Bronx wld prob be the best location. Anyone know of possibilities?
Thanks
The incredible shrinking tuna
Fyi, the King of the Sea is available all yr round..I usually pick it up at Fairway in Manhattan and they may be carrying it at all of their locations. (Interestingly enough at the store on 73rd St, the tuna is shelved in the "kosher" aisle, not with the other mainstream brands...had me wondering a few times if it wasn't really Seasons brand.)
I find it a good tuna altho' not as good as Kirkland...but if I'm going thru a heavy tuna phase I eat it for it's low mercury level claim!
Reviews of Passover Hotel Programs?
I spent Pesach at the Granit/Hudson Valley Spa & Resort...was my first time there after having been at the Nevele for many yrs. Thought the program was pretty good...crowd was mixed Orthodox...many women wearing sheitels but chol homoed there were also women wearing pants. Hotel was decent...my room which was the cheapest available was old, small, tiny bathroom, limited closet space (and incredibly didn't have a clock/radio...you'd think for $10 the hotel wld supply that!) but I did see a room 1 or 2 grades up that were slightly roomier, renovated bathroom, walk in closet...so to a degree I think you get what u pay for. And the Hochdorfs who run the pesach program did accurately describe the rooms when I made my reservations. The food was mixed...generally decent but not spectacular. Definitely plentiful and a good variety. Besides the facilities the hotel offers (golf, spa, tennis) they did have an organized hike ea day of chol homoed, free golf lessons, canoeing, hayrides among other stuff. They had shows the 3 nites of chol homoed...which ranged from bad to fair. Also had a number of lectures and exercise classes. Tried to show a couple of movies but believe that had limited success due to technical difficulties. Had a daycamp for kids but I can't give any feedback on it. Overall I wld say that even tho' it wasn't a fantastic experience, the Hochdorf's do try and will attempt to accomodate ppl if they can. (also fyi, it's a large program...900ppl!)
Looking for really good hamentashen recipe
that wild mushroom and cheese recipe sounds really interesting-certainly not one of the variations! Curious why you specifically don't recommend Millers crumbled feta...is there a specific quality that one should look for in the feta cheese? Is there any specific brand you do recommend?
Thanks!
