Casa del Ranchero - Barberton, OH

Nuevo is not the same owners as Momocho.

Another really incredible place is Taqueria La Loma. on Darrow Rd. in East Akron. It used to just be a taco truck outside of a Mexican grocery but they outgrew it and now have a small tacqueria. It is awesome!!

CT - out of season lobster roll

We're traveling to spend Thanksgiving with family in Bristol, CT. We'll be there all weekend and I MUST HAVE a lobster roll. I know it's the off season and all the best shacks are closed up till spring. But do you know of a place where I can get a killer lobster roll even in the winter? We're willing to drive a good distance. In fact, we may be heading to Boston over the weekend so could hit a place en route.

Thanks!

Best BBQ

I have a friend in town from Brazil and he will be traveling from Ohio to Texas and is eager to eat some authentic BBQ during his road trip. His final destination is Dallas. Looks like his route will take him from Memphis, TN through Little Rock, AK and then on to Dallas along I-30W and I-35E.

Anyone have any kick ass BBQ suggestions in the Dallas-Fort Worth area?

Ohio to TX - looking for BBQ

I have a friend in town from Brazil and he will be driving from Ohio to TX (for a conference) and is eager to eat authentic bbq throughout his road trip. Looks like the route goes right through Louisville (or just a quick trip east to Lexington) in KY and then on through Nashville, Jackson, and Memphis.

Any kick ass KY & TN bbq suggestions along that route?

General Cookbook for an 11 year old

One book that doesn't have pictures but is really cool is Michael Ruhlman's "The Elements of Cooking." (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASI...). It's like a glossary of ingredients and techniques. It's really awesome.

Another great source could be the America's Test Kitchen series. There are color photographs of every dish and there is an introductory paragraph that explains why a recipes works. I have this one and it's great - http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Americ...

Applause for Authentic Mexican in Akron -- La Taqueria Rancheros

yep - they are still there and he expanded. it is a bona fide eatery now with several tables and a liquor license. the food is killer - the fish tacos and carnitas are delicious! no very vegetarian friendly though - FYI.

Restaurants in Canton, Oh

the giesen haus is a pretty cool german place (http://www.geisenhausohio.com/) and bombay sitar is a great indian place (http://www.bombaysitar.com/). there is also a BBQ joint - locally owned - several locations - called old carolia bbq (http://oldcarolina.com/).

a possible night time/couple spot might be bender's tavern (http://www.bendersrestaurant.com/). it is a bit farther from your hotel but it is the oldest restaurant in canton. the food & drinks are good and it has some great charm - very dark, high plush booths. very cool.

and here's a thread re. canton from a while back - http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/359990

Casa del Ranchero - Barberton, OH

i have not eaten there but a few friends always rave about. i am partial to el campesino on rt. 59 in stow kent. if that is within your driving range check it out. the margaritas are NOT electric green like many other local mexican joints. they have a really varied menu and my favorites are the mexican tacos (just steak, cilantro and onion...mmm!) and the fish tacos. pretty tasty. def my number 1 close mexican joint.

Visiting Cleveland, which restaurants I should not miss ?

if you're looking for bbq you could always try hot sauce williams. the ribs and pulled pork are good (sweet, ketchup based sauce) and the fried chicken is tops. i think there are three locations but i've only been to the one on superior.

i agree with the bar cento recommendation. it is relatively inexpensive, they have a KILLER beer selection and the food is delicious. right across from the west side market too!

Clevelanders: Where do you buy your meat?

the north union farmers market at shaker square is fantastic. it's indoors in the winter and there are numerous local farmers selling meat. new creations has GREAT heritage pork and i have bought chicken, eggs, duck and goose from plum creek farm. i also like the great american lamb company and have bought numerous cuts of lamb - all of which have been delicious. and chef's choice meats is excellent. really, really excellent. WSM is good but i am wary of some stands that can't give me a straight answer of where exactly the meat is coming from. obviously it's more expensive to buy directly from the farmer but it is totally worth it for us as meat is not something we eat everyday. plus, it's fun to shop at the markets and support someone in your community.
