EN/KR Great Northbay Taco Crawl - Petaluma

Lolita's on weekends make Birria, Menudo, and hand made corn tortillas. The Menudo is excellent, as good or better than La Fondita.

Richmond – Pacific East Mall - Coriya Hot Pot City

I have been there twice in the last month. First was for a weekday lunch with my Brother and a friend. There was maybe three stations being used. We told our greeter that we had no knowledge of the their restaurant and could use some guidance. They were very helpful in showing us the stations of the foods, buttering up the grill, and mixing up our first dipping sauce. It's pretty much get a little bit of everything and give it a try, you'll know what to go back for. We were an a schedule, and felt we could have used more time, but ....

Second time was a few weeks ago when I met up with some old friends I had not seen in a while. Armed with a little more knowledge and about two hours on a Sunday afternoon, it was a much more enjoyable experience. We also asked for a split pot so we had the option of using both the standard broth and the spicy one, the spicy one is spicy. There were maybe 6-7 stations working, but nowhere near being crowded. Everyone was able to find something they liked. I enjoyed the marinated beef and pork grilled. I thought a few on the sushi items were not half bad. There's a regular soda fountain, but they also have the tapioca milk tea drinks there, all of it inclusive. One of us would only eat seafood and veggies, and she was happy with what was offered. We all thought it was a great value, and a fun way to catch up.

Fresh English peas?

I love English peas, and the best I have ever had come from a small vegetable stand, I think called Bob's, about 5 miles south of Half Moon Bay on Hwy 1. During salmon season I always stop there and load up. They are still cool from the foggy fields, and so sweet. Almost always eat straight from the pod.

Looking for Cherry Juice

Trader Joe's has some choices, I usually try to get Black Cherry juice. Make sure you check out the label and see that it is 100% cherry juice. Producers like to slip in apple and grape juice in there.

Grocery Outlet update Jan. 26

Melanie, Petaluma did have Carmelina brand, but they were packed in puree. I have used them a few time and think they are very good, especially considering the price.

There is a PGI seal on the large tins, but missing on the 400 gr tins. It appears the PGI designation means:

"In the case of the PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) the geographical link must occur in at least one of the stages of production, processing or preparation. Furthermore, the product can benefit from a good reputation."

From:

http://ec.europa.eu/agriculture/foodq...

Perhaps meaning the growing was done in the region and processed elsewhere.

Carmelina has a website and a toll free number, but they close at 4 so I was not able to talk to anyone.

http://www.carmelinabrands.com/index....

All in all they are a good value, but I would like to know also seeing that I have stocked upped.

Curious to know what day of the week you had lunch? 1:30 seems too early to discontinue the buffet. We have gone many times, but usually soon after the buffet starts at 11:00. It's a good buffet, hope you get a chance to try it.

Simply Vietnam in Santa Rosa

Simply Vietnam seems to be the best Pho in the Northbay at this time. I enjoyed a very good bowl of Pho today with some relatives. We all had Pho, two extra larges and one large. The extra large was just a dollar more, they are huge. I brought half home. My brother is a huge eater and did not finish his, his son, a big guy himself, barely finished his large.

Ok, so the bowls are big, but the broth meet my brother's number one priority, he loved it. I thought the broth was outstanding also. The noodles were not a mushy mess and all stuck together. Tons of meat, and the best tendon I have had anywhere. Fresh veggies, with a fair amount of basil for this time of the year, no brown sprouts, nice juicy lime, and the jalapenos were hot. All the usual condiments present.

Service was quick to seat us, take our order, and serve us as well. The place was re-opened about 3.5 months ago. It's nicely redecorated, very clean. Prices are inexpensive. The place is busy, many Asians in attendance, for good reason I believe.

I really like this place and hope to explore more on their menu.

They are on Dutton just south of College.

Btw, $5.75 for a large, $6.75 for a extra large.

Santa Rosa shopping news

I just got back from checking Asia Gourmet. This is a snazzy shop unique to the Northbay, afaik. I was greeted by Jay Jay and was told to not hesitate if I had any questions, and encouraged me to take my pictures.. They have a nice mix of the usual asian staples. Their refrigerator section has noodles, kimchee, fresh veggies including galanga. There a good selection in the freezer. There's a nice selection of pots, pans, woks. I thought the ceramic bowls were very handsome, seemed to be a good price for the set. The knives looked impressive, and at what appeared nice prices too. After cruising the store and taking my photos I had a nice conversation with Jay Jay. They have not fully filled all their shelf space and are encouraging recommendations on how to fill it. Beer and wine are not available at this time, but they are looking forward to fixing that in a couple of months. They are both new to the area and they are looking to find good, inexpensive places to eat ... I recommended they get hooked up with chowhounds.com

I apologize for the pictures, the lens was dirty and did not realize it until I got back.

Shanghai Flavor Shop in Sunnyvale

Well this takes me back to the late 80's when a coworker who just arrived from Taiwan told me about this place. I lived pretty close and used to go in there and pick up their boxed meal. Everything was in Chinese and no one spoke English, but no mind, I just asked for what looked interesting or something I had never had, it was always an adventure when I got home to eat it. The last time I was there was a few years ago, it's about the same, the prices are very reasonable, and it's still an adventure. A very interesting place.

Champurrado and Tacos from Delicias Elenitas (Santa Rosa)

Thanks Stephanie, that's the place. Guess I'll include Yahoo next time I do a search. It's a small place, and I have found the food a good value, and the people running it helpful, and wanting to please. I hope they can make a living there, there have been more than a few come and go from that location. I'd like to hear your opinion of it.

Have you tried the Menudo at Pupuseria Salvadorena? I'm always on the lookout for good Menudo, especially in the Northbay.

With the site's changeover, two letter names were not allowed, and that is my post about La Fondita.

La Fondita and Lolita's Market still have the best Menudo.

But, there is a new Salvadorian pupusaria on Southwest Blvd in Rohnert Park near the 49er. It looks like it's run by a Mom and Grandmom and they make a version of Menudo like I have never had. It's has a nice depth to it, but is sweeter and the robust chile flavor is muted. They use the good honeycomb tripe, and include the thick handmade tortillas that are outstanding. I don't recall the name of the place, and tried googleing, but nothing. I've had lunch there a few time and have been pleased with the burritos, pupusas, and plate lunches. It's not too far from Bear Korean, and Asiana Market.

Thanks for the report. Always enjoy your reports about the small places up here. I had one of the best bowls of Menudo anywhere at La Fondita, which must be within a stones throw of where you had those good looking tacos.

Old links/posts - any solutions ?

This is a serious concern of mine also. I have many pages bookmarked of places to try, and many of them have important information that cannot be discerned by the title alone. For some reason I thought getting this issue right was a priority when the development was being done.
