reasonably priced brisket
Man if whole foods brisket is $7/lb I don't even want to know how much their steaks are. Brisket should never be over $5/lb if you do your research. Don't need to go to byerlys or whole foods to get good brisket. Try a market that has local farmers. But, be careful with grass fed brisket....it can be dry as its often lower in fat content. Fat is good with slow cooked meats.
Fall off the bone ribs [split from MSP]
(Note: this post was split from the Minneapolis-St. Paul board at: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/846521 -- The Chowhound Team)
Want to make fall off the bone ribs cheaper than any restaurant. Get Brisket of Love spice from the Spice House. Add that the night before. Then put it in about 8 hrs before you want to eat at 200 covered in foil. Then add your favorite sauce (if wanted). Throw on grill at high temp or oven at Broil for 5-10 min. Voila. Just as good as most rib places...the bones just pull out. Granted not much smoke flavor but you can buy smoked salt to add some flavor.
Visit to Minneapolis
One can eat in the bowling alley too downstairs. I have never had to wait there, even on a Friday at 12pm.
As a side note, they have or at least had a mistake on their menu where the lucy with the most on it was the cheapest....dont know if they fixed it though. I think it had roast beef on it maybe..
Great steak for a decent price
Try the St Paul College culinary school (Tues-Thurs). Three weeks ago I got a filet for $9. Try and beat that. Granted, these are students but it was still a good steak and easily worth significantly more.
What happened to Midtown Global Market?
If you don't want to get approached by a panhandler, good luck walking any major pedestrian street in any major city anywhere in the world. People have and always will beg.
I love MGM, but do agree the past few times it has been a lot less lively and I have seen a few open booths. The Sunday Brunches are awesome value and I have always had a special place for Manny's Special Torta....but I am thinking the economy is probably affecting it as much as anything. And gas prices. I drive maybe 20 minutes to go there. Parking is always free with $5 purchase...which if you can't find something there...good luck anywhere.
I personally love ethnic diversity and wish the area around Hennepin and Lake had restaurants with this sort of flavor that were open late at night.
New York-style pizza in the south metro?
I always found it fascinating how long people were willing to wait for Andreas...granted....its good...really good..but great...I dont think so...more times than not its a little doughy...but they do have a fantastic selection.
For a great deal go to Ginellis on Tuesday in skyway...On tues before 11:30 its like $2.22 for a slice.
On a side note, just bought some dough from Byerlys..threw it on the grill...really good stuff...for homemade that is....and kind of fun
Haute Dish, tonight
I ate at HD on Saturday evening. First off, I was told that they were out of Tater Tot Haute Dish. Thats fine if its like 10pm or you have an extensive menu....but when its just barely past 8pm and the restaurant is half full....its a little alarming. Granted the staff did give us a free round, but it seems a menu with such limited (granted that is fine) menu would be able to provide anything until at least 10pm.
Il Gatto closed
First off...why did they mess with Figlio? Granted it had a few opportunities...but its like coaching in pro sports...Why not try and fix things rather than always scrubbing and throwing another dart. Il Gatto never made me feel the way figlio did...and I think its pathetic to even include a restaurant like Burger Jones with either of them. I would rather have the Nook, Matts, or 5 guys before I would even consider BJ. Burgers are like pizza. Its very easy to make it edible. Its very hard to make it exciting or unique.
I think the availability, price, and selection that food trucks are beginning to offer could teach Uptown a few things. IMO Chino Latino is to cool what Justin Bieber is to sex object. I am sure someone believes it...it just ain't me.
Surdyk's Liquor infuriates Surly Nation!!!
Good link Danny....I have to agree with that article. Abrasive is WAY better in comparison to its competition than darnkess. I think the fancy bottle, limited quanity, and hipster movement has allowed omar to do what he wants when he wants. Can we blame him...I don't really know. Its America so that makes me believe we can say he should be able to do what he wants within the law to be profitable, but we also like to gripe about things as citizens of this used-to-be-great country.
Personally, I think Surly is at its peak locally....so it will be intersting to see how the new brewery and increased production impacts loyalty. You can justify high prices on small batches...but can you when its 2 times its previous batch? Raw materials should get cheaper as vendor relationships improve. Just funny to see people lining up to be volunteers for this place. Have they not heard of food shelves?
Surdyk's Liquor infuriates Surly Nation!!!
good rec Brad, that is a great beer as well.
Surdyk's Liquor infuriates Surly Nation!!!
Yep. Wet Hopped. I think it was $11.99 a 6 pack so a little less than Wet.
Surdyk's Liquor infuriates Surly Nation!!!
Try Brau Bros Hundred Yard Dash. Its possible better than Wet. And local. Support Local!!!!
Why I love Surly and go on tours more than I want to admit...and buy hundreds of dollars of their beer. The reputation and almost obsession I think is a little bit more than they deserve. I think it proves a mass shortage of brewers in the area. I hope they are just the first of many. Competition is good and if another guy came in that was more craft than Summit and less elitist than Surly they might win a good share of the market.
Surdyk's Liquor infuriates Surly Nation!!!
Surly Fans are almost too patriotic sometimes...which causes this. They will just buy whatever Surly churns out....Basically the newly introduced to craft beers....Surly is hands down the best brewer in the midwest but I think Abrasive and Wet are way better than Darkness. I think the popularity has kind of created a "hipster" following to things like Surly. Its great to like it, but I think people should try some Belgian beers like Westy 12 before they tout Surly. It might be one of the best in the US (along with the likes of Bells) but I dont get the craze sometimes. With that I just bought a flat of Wet (6 4pks). And yes my hypocrasy is tasty...sweet hoppy flavor.
Surdyks is a joke in my book. I can get wine regular priced (after getting 15% off case deal that most liquor stores offer) for CHEAPER than their advertised "wine sales". Their prices are high, and their selection isnt that much better than any well run liquor store. I go to Liquor Barrel and they beat Surdyk's for ease, selection, and price on craft beer with no question.
Quality Takeout near intersection of 394/100

Quality Takeout near intersection of 394/100
I have tried Mort's several times...and granted a few were off-times (ie. 2:30pm) but I was surprised how dry the pastrami I had was. I LOVE deli's like that so I have given it a few other chances. Not bad per se, just not even as good as what I had in any major city deli like Jakes in Milwaukee or Shapiro in Indianapolis.
Appreciate the comment and time taken. I will give it another try....I do want the place to suceed.
Quality Takeout near intersection of 394/100
I live in Golden Valley and was wondering if anyone had suggestions for good takeout (chinese, viet, thai, italian, sandwiches, etc) around the intersection of HWY 100 and 394? I am open for any type of food, but am not a big fan of americanized flavorless deep fried mush that we often call chinese food.
Willing to drive a little distance for good food. Also, open late helps. I could even travel as far as the north side of downtown. Suggestions?
Going for a sunday meal Morts or Good Day. Which is better
Depends what you are looking for. I am not a huge fan of Mort's as I think their pastrami and corned beef has a lot to be desired for the price (or at least compared to other big city jewish style deli's). I have been there 4 times and maybe once was it a really good experience. Just my .02 though. I would probably do Good Day. But both are very different...hard to really compare.

Osseo Meat Market & Deli -- best old fashioned skin on hot dogs, and other stuff
I drive there from Golden Valley every few months. They have a decent selection of brats/sausages/jerky as well as cold cuts/cheeses (often forgotten). They also have a very large frozen section. Some people might complain about paying $10/lb for steak when they can get it at cub cheaper...but you get what you pay for. I don't buy my steaks at grocery stores...particularly ones that add solutions to their meat to make them more tender (shady).
I agree their hot dogs are great. They even have a few varieties. I love the cased ones on the grill, but get the chicago ones for chili cheese dogs. As the OP said, bacon is TOP NOTCH. Thick cut, multiple varieties (smoked, cajun, pepper). I have never found a bacon that grills better on an open fire.
One time I got a rib eye and had then cut thin (almost shaved) slices for me to make a philly cheese steak. This place is hands down way better than Hackenmeuller (sp?) in my opinion. If nothing more, its refreshing to see the same faces every time I go in. That speaks to a good business that cares about quality and service. But....please open on Sundays :-(
Twin Cities best onion rings?
Used to be Mady's Bowling on Central and 42nd(?). Seriously I would drive there just for the rings. Epicly good. I prefer the thinner slices over like a ultra thick slice of onion though.
Locally made American cheese
Its not local but Boars Head does a fine yellow and white american cheese. Byerly's has it...and they also have some smoked wisconsin cheese that is fantastic on burgers..ie smoked provolone, swiss, etc. Both are not branded I believe and around $5/lb.
I love good cheese and all varieties and only eat american on burgers and grilled cheese but something about it on a burger...I have had every other cheese and still go back to american. It doesnt have to be fancy to be good. Carr Valley is fantastic cheese. I buy it regularly....not sure about melt though if its a cheddar. Great cheese though. You can also buy bricks (2lbs) of Tillamook at Costco. For a basic cheap cheddar or sharp cheddar I dont think that price can be beat. $6.79 or around there.

Walkerswood jerk?
When I went to Jamaica I came back with Lasco brand All Purpose Seasoning. Its fantastic to add in almost anything and is very low % of salt...in fact might be the last ingredient listed (which I personally like). I bought it a few times off ebay even. I recommend this as well. Great even on fries or potatoes.
Terrible Service at Victory 44
I find it funny people try to disparage a post on chow. It was their experience. I would not say its totally an anomally as others I know have experiences similar results. I once went in 45 minutes before close to be told they were shutting down due to lack of business. Just some strange things that I also haven't experienced at other similar restaurants in the city. Love the food, just want them to have service that matches the food. But lets not try and discredit someones experience. It misses the point entirely. But apparently its what the world is coming to. Arguments are becoming our politicals landscapes national pastime....why not foodies
Terrible Service at Victory 44
I have had hit or miss experiences with the wait time. I agree, some organization is needed. Service is one of the things you expect from V44 as well. Sometimes I wonder if they are just understaffed or don't anticipate influx in volume well.
With that said the food has always been good, with the exception of some bacon frites that had to be sent back b/c they were cold. Other than that great restaurant but yeah...a little better service will keep it there for years to come.
Roast Beef: Maverick's vs. Wally's or other?
Mavericks is great. I like the fact they have fresh sides (fried per order)...and their roast beef is always tender and juicy. I have been there 10 or so times and only one bad experience (dry beef). From my trips I have found its best to go on typical lunch times so that the meat isn't sitting there. Also...good milkshakes and I just love that everytime I go there someone is walking into subway and getting a deflated bread sandwich with overlysalted nastiness covered by veggies.
Black Sheep Coal Fired Pizza: MSP
I love punch flavor and ingredients...but I totally agree with the soggy middle. It creates a rather unappetizing final product and is not something I have experienced to such a scale in similar restaurants in milan, rome, etc.....
Great Pizza....but something that is noticeable to others I have eaten with as well.
Grilled Cheese North of Milwaukee on I-94
burger, custard. I am sold. Although I rarely buy burgers out (unless its a juicy lucy here in the twin cities) I love both. Wisconsin is a very underapreciated foodie state. Presentation is in my opinion the most overrated aspect of food quality. Its comes to great raw ingredients, which the state has lots to offer.
I think it is Kopps. THANKS SO MUCH for everyones replies. I greatly appreciate your time and effort.
Grilled Cheese North of Milwaukee on I-94
Joypirate that does look very similar. You might be spot on. No place to sit down...check. Counter style...check.
Has anyone actually eaten here? Is it worth stopping by? I am going to Milwaukee to see some music over somerfest and am looking for DDD's type places. Not fancy, but epic good. The types of places that might be a little dirty but the food is something you dream about for years to come.
Grilled Cheese North of Milwaukee on I-94
Thanks so much for everyones suggestions. I think the place was more of a counter style restaurant where you ordered then sat down. I believe I might have even eaten in the parking lot. It wasn't a formal lunch/dinner place where you have a waiter if I remember correctly. It was like a stop on an exit ramp that just happen to be a-m-a-z-i-n-g and I fantasize about this simplistic creation often :-)
Grilled Cheese North of Milwaukee on I-94
I am seeking some chowhound help from my fellow foodies.
There is a place not far off I-94 north of Milwaukee that I went to maybe 7 years ago after a concert I was in town for. It was one of the simplest, but most amazing grilled cheeses I have ever had. Does anyone know what I am talking about? Maybe 15-30 minutes north of the city and not far off the interstate. I remember it being so good I got 3.
Help?
Thanks for any insight and your time.
I think I've found the best sandwich in MSP
I was fortunate enough to stop by when they had this sandwich instock. It was definitely a memorable one. Flavorful meat, very moist well seasoned. The cheese was perfectly balanced for the sandwich and matched it perfectly. The bread was also fresh, which was a nice touch. All told, a fantastic sandwich that I would recommend to anyone. I think it was around $10 but it had me thinking about it all day after I ate it.
