Buckwheat Flour in LA?

Los Feliz -- you're in luck. They definitely have it at the Nature Mart / Bulk Bin place on Hillhurst just south of Ambrose. Lots of interesting things in the bins there.

Anybody know where to get back bacon?

Have you tried Jon's? I've definitely bought a smoked pork loin from their meat section. I don't think it was sold as back bacon, but it definitely was a loin, not ham.

Good eats with kids near the L.A. County Zoo

The redone 9-hole golf course cafe is pretty nice. (just called "Eat" I think.) It's a hamburger stand with waitresses, covered seating and pretty extensive menu. I had a very big, very good hot dog. Eggs and bacon were good. It's also probably the closest place to the zoo that isn't in Griffith Park.

On the north side of Los Feliz Blvd, just east of the 5.

Ethnic fast food chains?

El Pollo Loco is now operated by a US company on this side of the border, but it actually started as a Mexican chain. According to their website, the first one in the US was opened in 1980 on Alvarado St in LA. (There are two on Alvarado St now so I'm not sure which one it is.)

Slip Me Some Tongue (sandwich) Recc's

The Arax Falafel lamb's tongue sandwich is insane. Tongue and tomatoes inside a hot pressed sandwich, turnip pickles on the side. J. Gold had a big thing about it. Since his article I've been there many times. Falafel is good too. It's on the northwest corner of Santa Monica and Normandie.

smoked mackerel at whole food in atwater

I'd been idly looking for whole smoked mackerel for a long time in Los Angeles. The grocery "Whole Food For Life" in Atwater Village has them for $5 per pound. I just had some for lunch and it was delicious. Note that this store is not the chain "Whole Foods" but a smaller independent grocery with a slightly different name.

Good cured meat selection too.

Someone asked that of the LA Weekly's food column two weeks ago. That must have been you, because they mention the same NY restaurant? (If Chabelita != George then you've officially found your soul mate.)

His answer was "Enoteca Drago" in BH.

Note: You and he both talk about pecorino but _Silver Spoon_ recommends half Parmesan half Romano.

I have found that the Horizon organic brown eggs (avail at Ralphs and everywhere) have noticeably oranger yolks. Don't know if that's neccessarily better but they're tasty and I can vouch for the resulting carbonara.

Best Roach Coach in L.A.?

from modernist's reply on this thread:

a cemita is a sandwhich. unlike the heavy torta bread, the cemita is a light roll type bread. the most popular meat is a milanesa but you can have everything from stewed pig skin to any type of roasted meats. it has slices of avocado (la china poblana is most generous in this dept) grilled peppers and some form of cheese. i think panela is the most common. you'll see lots of cemitas trucks in east la on whittier in the more western part of town.

But I still don't know how to pronounce it...

Is Kikuchi gone?

Probably. It was for sale for a while.

Per this thread, the owners had immigration trouble and it was due to close in April:
