the HAMLET has reopened

Considering that there were at least two locations earlier this year, it was not a ridiculous question.

Pasadena area group dinner

Not the least bit conducive for a group bigger than 6, let alone 25. Also, OP seeks reservations.

From EaterLA: "Grand Central Market Makes Bon App's Best Resto List"......My question is "Who Made This Happen?"

This should answer many of your questions.

Same folks who are responsible for the Ferry Bldg. in San Francisco.

A Good Diner

What do consider a "diner?" You mentioned the 101 Cafe, which most locals probably think of as a "coffee shop." A place with a counter as well as tables; varied menu of American classics; and breakfast available at all opening hours.

If you're talking about the stainless steel type, we don't have any of those around here.

Vertical: Sale or Relocation?

For what it's worth, over the past 10 days or so I have continued receiving chef LQ's emails promoting upcoming events at Vertical, so they must be operating at some level.

Ramen Coming to Grand Central Market

I've never had to wait for anything remotely approaching an hour. Even at peak times, if you get it to go, you'll be served very quickly. Ten-12 minutes, I'd say. That has been my experience, anyway.

Roma Deli and Rosario's Sandwiches still around?

We had them for lunch on Saturday. Grabbed three as Rosario placed them on the counter. It was about 1:30 p.m. and people (myself included) were grabbing them as fast as he could make them. I happened to also need some prosciutto and, just my luck, that's the meat he currently had on the slicer.

There's Green St. Restaurant and Green St. Tavern, but there's no Green St. Cafe.

GCM is Getting The Best Ice Cream Parlour

The no-fries gimmick often doesn't work with me, as there are precious few places that actually make a french fry good enough for me to want to spend extra on it

GCM is Getting The Best Ice Cream Parlour

I've never understood all the fuss over McConnell's for 30+ years now. I've had it in their shops in the Santa Barbara area and in L.A. (early 80s); from the freezer in Gelson's; and other retail, ice cream-serving establishments. It's always been just OK. Haagen Dazs was and remains better, IMHO.

Where to find yellow watermelon?

At least one vendor, Underwood Farms, at the Pasadena farmers' market yesterday.

Where to find yellow watermelon?

I have seen them at the Saturday mkt. in Pasadena, but I can't say for certain if they're in yet this year. It's not something I look for.

Copper River salmon at Costco

I like the Burbank Costco for foodstuffs and wine. To be honest, I haven't compared the food offerings as much as the wines, and Burbank is a clear wine winner over the two stores that are technically closer to me (Alhambra, Irwindale/Azusa) so that's where I go. I've gotten really good salmon there, and have been lucky enough to find a suitable portion (there's only two of us) every time.

Copper River salmon at Costco

We have different tastes, I guess. I've always been impressed with the price/quality ratio of their various Cotes du Rhone over the years. Got a few bottles of a really nice Bordeaux at $20/bottle a couple years ago that goes for more than double that at my local wine shop (which generally has good prices). They carry good whiskey and tequila on their Kirkland label that sells for a lot less than the name label, too.

I've bought very good wild salmon there as well. You can't fake the freshness, and it's about 1/2 what it would cost at Whole Foods or anywhere else.

Sounds like you go to the wrong Costcos (they aren't stocked the same, you know).

Last Hamburger Hamlet Standing (Sherman Oaks) Bites the Dust.

"I got the recipe from HH Corporate..."

That in and of itself may be the problem - you got the recipe after the chain went corporate. HH started going downhill once it was a corporate business rather than a family-owned establishment. It would not shock me to learn that they changed recipes.

I completely forgot about the great fresh salmon deals at Costco. Time to make another excursion over there! Any good wine or liquor deals currently (Burbank)?

Could any chef in LA prepare Lievre a la Royale?

As of about 20 minutes ago, Bel Campo meats at GCM had fresh rabbits, presumably from its fields. I couldn't tell you about the blood, but it happened to be something I noticed.

Sour Cherries

Regular cherries are already available. Are there specific varieties of "sour" cherries, or are they just unripe? If the latter, I suspect they're already available considering you can get fully ripe ones.

I should also mention that they had fresh sour cherry pie at Du-Par's Pasadena the other day.

That's another one that's only supposed to be eaten once a year. But it's probably been 5 years for me, so that means I can have 5 of them, right?

I find your comment surprising concerning the salt level of the chicken soup. I like Langers' chicken soup, but I find it more than sufficiently salty.

I honestly couldn't tell you. If I'm snooty, it can't be "westside" snootery, is all I'm saying.

A non sequitur. You can't accuse someone who hasn't ever lived west of Vine/Rossmore of "westside snootery and myopia." Just sayin'.
