Last minute dinner downtown tonight?

Chaya Downtown and Drago Centro are both fine candidates. I think the former lends itself better to a earlier meal, but that's more of a personal choice.

Cafe Bizou, Pasadena?

No argument here. I gathered the OP was looking to spend a little less money than it would cost at those three.

Cafe Bizou, Pasadena?

Let's just say I STRONGLY disagree. Even putting aside ambiance and service, which are both much better at Bizou (no comparison, really) and looking just at what's on the plate, I find the ridiculously large servings of heavily sugared offerings at the Factory to be a real turnoff. I can reliably get something inoffensive at Bisou.

Cafe Bizou, Pasadena?

Yes, the food is definitely decent and it is not too loud. The comparison to Cheesecake Factory is unfair and inaccurate. It's better than that.

Consider also Central Park, just a few blocks south on Fair Oaks (but North of Del Mar). I had a pleasant meal there quite recently (better than Bizou, IMHO), and I recall not having to shout to be heard. Plus, free parking.

2014 Sammy Awards - Who's In?

I went to Fredo's; it was quite good as I remember, but I only made it there once. Boo's is at least its equal. And the question about Boo's specifically addressed its authenticity and nothing else (though it is good).

Ground veal in the Silver Lake/Los Feliz/EP/East Hollywood area?

Whole Foods has ground veal. If you're in the Pasadena/San Gabriel area, I'd also call Alexander's meats (inside Howie's market).

Food better at GCM or at Ferry Building? [moved from LA 1st Timer thread]

I disagree, at least if we're including restaurants. Or has the equivalent of Hog Island Oyster Company opened since I was last at GCM?

ACME bread, Boccalone & Cowgirl Creamery are a nice A, B, C of choices to back up Hog Island, and also Slanted Door, for which there is definitely no GCM entry.

Is The Ladies Gunboat Society still worth going to?

As I wrote in my second sentence, "The food was good overall, but..."

I've had food of similar quality elsewhere, but with competent service.

Is The Ladies Gunboat Society still worth going to?

I had a rather disappointing experience there last night. The food was good overall, but service was poor and ill-advised.

Our party of 3 arrived at 5:30. Maybe 2 other tables occupied. Took some time in ordering but still got in in well before 6. Took over 30 minutes go get our oyster appetizers. They gave a lame excuse about the person who does the oysters being very busy, but this was in a half-filled restaurant with no other apparent oyster orders. How long would it have taken at 7:30? Or if they had multiple orders? If they can't handle it, they should take them off the menu. Don't make people wait that long for a first course.

The "family style" method of service was obtuse. We ordered a ribeye steak and a pork chop (as well as a piece of fish). Neither piece of meat was pre-cut. What were we supposed to do, eat for a while then trade plates? Or were we each supposed to cut up a piece of meat/fish, and then pass it around? With no serving utensils?

Family style works at Craft because everything is delivered to the table ready to serve.

Du-Par's Opening in Encino

Now, these look much more like the real thing (still a touch too fluffy, but why those horrible plastic things of syrup rather than a bottle from which you can pour? Cheapskates). But that is one of the problems: total lack of consistency. I've had ones that matched the butter and ones that matched the syrup on the same plate. How can someone allow that to happen?

Du-Par's Opening in Encino

Right now, I'd say my own, frankly; however, my current physical condition prevents me from doing much in a kitchen. I'd still probably pick Du-Par's (Pasadena location), with the understanding that it's merely because they're slightly better than average, as opposed to truly sublime as they used to be.

I've also noted quite a divergence in quality between locations (Pasadena MUCH better than Studio City now), whereas previously they were reliable across the board.

Du-Par's Opening in Encino

There is no question that they are now lighter and fluffier; that's the problem. The fact that they were denser (without being heavy) was their defining characteristic. Now, they're just another hotcake. Not bad, but not as good as they were.

The worst part may be their denying that they didn't change the recipe, when it's clear they did. Either that, or the prior owners didn't give them the real recipe.

The butter was always melted unless one asked for something different.

As for maple syrup, they used to offer a concoction but IIRC they were actually claiming to now serve the real thing. But don't quote me on that.

Reality distortion field: off. Prepacked sushi is actually a rip off right?

Tips belong to the server legally, at least in California. If there is no server (and generally there isn't on a takeout order - it is packed up in the kitchen instead of being plated), there is no reason to tip IMHO.

A joy to read. Despite living here for 44+years, I have yet to visit Dan Tana's. I will soon correct this failure.

LA County Fair - 2014 roundup

You're exactly right about the "Thai" concession. Closest thing to an old school eggroll I've come across in a while.

Re: Dr. Bob's (mentioned by others above), I don't get the love. It is full of things like guar gum that have no place in ice cream and leave a weird feeling in my mouth. Yuck. Such a shame, too, because I want to like it.

First Visit: Crossings in South Pasadena

We've been to Crossings about 1/2 dozen times now, and have had nothing but positive experiences. And you're exactly right: it's a place that feels youthful but grown-up, where you can actually have a conversation with multiple dining companions without anyone having to shout.

Try the lamb chops next time!

Considering that there were at least two locations earlier this year, it was not a ridiculous question.

Pasadena area group dinner

Not the least bit conducive for a group bigger than 6, let alone 25. Also, OP seeks reservations.

A Good Diner

What do consider a "diner?" You mentioned the 101 Cafe, which most locals probably think of as a "coffee shop." A place with a counter as well as tables; varied menu of American classics; and breakfast available at all opening hours.

If you're talking about the stainless steel type, we don't have any of those around here.

For what it's worth, over the past 10 days or so I have continued receiving chef LQ's emails promoting upcoming events at Vertical, so they must be operating at some level.

Ramen Coming to Grand Central Market

I've never had to wait for anything remotely approaching an hour. Even at peak times, if you get it to go, you'll be served very quickly. Ten-12 minutes, I'd say. That has been my experience, anyway.

Roma Deli and Rosario's Sandwiches still around?

We had them for lunch on Saturday. Grabbed three as Rosario placed them on the counter. It was about 1:30 p.m. and people (myself included) were grabbing them as fast as he could make them. I happened to also need some prosciutto and, just my luck, that's the meat he currently had on the slicer.

GCM is Getting The Best Ice Cream Parlour

I've never understood all the fuss over McConnell's for 30+ years now. I've had it in their shops in the Santa Barbara area and in L.A. (early 80s); from the freezer in Gelson's; and other retail, ice cream-serving establishments. It's always been just OK. Haagen Dazs was and remains better, IMHO.

At least one vendor, Underwood Farms, at the Pasadena farmers' market yesterday.
