This would be in accord with my general sense that Glendale seems to have more sweets..

Italian Buttercream Frosting Cakes near Pasadena?

There's an Italian bakery in Eagle Rock proper, though I can't for the life of me remember its name. It may just be Italian Bakery, in fact. In any event, you might want to check it out.

Sourcing Fresh Stinging Nettles in LA?

I know I've seen them at a farmers' market. I can't remember if it was a Saturday in Pasadena or a Sunday in Alhambra, but more likely the former.

Special birthday dinner Pasadena or environs

Where is Hugo Molina these days? We followed him to his own place on Green St. after he left Parkway, then sort of lost track of him. Last I heard he was heading the kitchen at a (now gone) place on La Cienega.

They have a larger-than-average selection of first courses, and those in particular I've enjoyed have been the shrimp ceviche, the tuna poke, the scallop and the oysters. In other words, the seafood (it just so happens that I've had seafood every time).

You know, it's been several years now since I went to Parkway. Crossings is much more "traditional" than I recall Parkway being. Frankly, I'm a bit surprised to learn this, but I bet it's been 5 years since I last visited. In fact, looking over the Parkway menu, it seems not nearly as innovative as it once was. Or maybe it's just that things that seemed cutting edge 25 years ago aren't so much today.

Crossings in South Pas is my current favorite area restaurant, followed very closely by the Raymond. They might switch places on a warm evening.

As for the Royce steakhouse, I have no personal experience. I did have several good meals when the chef at Royce was leading the kitchen at Craft in Century City a few years ago. Assuming the menu appealed to me, I wouldn't hesitate to give it a shot.

You'll have a much wider selection at either Crossings or the Raymond, though.

Restaurants not having websites only Facebook

This is an honest question: what did you do before the internet? Not eat out ever?

Restaurants not having websites only Facebook

Somewhat annoyed; however, I also understand that maintaining a website can be rather a pain (particularly for a smaller place) and that it's a lot faster & easier to keep a facebook page up-to-date. Considering that their primary focus should be on feeding me, I don't really mind if they choose not to spend a lot of time on a web site (although I agree that if they're not keeping FB up-to-date, either, that doesn't do me a lot of good)

Hows last location is closing!

I can't stand either Vons or Albertson's, but when it comes to image, there's no question that Vons/Safeway > Albertson's.

Actually organic at Farmers Markets ???

Note that regulations permit one vendor to sell goods grown by another under certain conditions, so there can be instances where farmer A's goods are being sold by farmer B and it's perfectly legit.

A grower admitting they're not organic is shady?

I was informed of this the other day. Very sad indeed, especially for anyone who buys meat.

Actually organic at Farmers Markets ???

Jaime Farms is one of the biggest vendors at area farmers' markets. They take credit cards. They're opening themselves up to huge liability if they misrepresent their status. Your "rationale" for questioning their legitimacy is meaningless. Moreover, have you been in SoCal this winter? Considering that ALL of the vendors have strawberries now, what is the least bit surprising that Jaime farms does, too?

Why wouldn't you trust a bigger operation's Organic claim? It's actually quite expensive to be certified. I would not expect a vendor who looks like a young hippie to have gone through the process necessary to actually get to use an Organic label. Indeed, many vendors will tell you straight up that they follow all of the "rules" but can't call themselves organic because it's such a PITA to get certified.

LA Weekly's 99 essential restaurants released today...what did they miss?

Mozza is definitely "essential" even if it's not the "best" in any sense of the word. It changed the pizza landscape in L.A.

Art's is mediocre at best.

But that merely proves the point. There are a half-dozen or so delis for all of the county. Literally none of them east of Langer's.

LA Weekly's 99 essential restaurants released today...what did they miss?

They're disappearance is "slow" only because there are only a couple to begin with. There are literally none in the SGV already. Compare that to say, tacos, where there are literally thousands of choices.

Many delis in LA doing very good stuff? Really? There's Langer's, and, uh, Langer's [no Brent's in this scenario], and Langer's. Delicatessens are an endangered species

Finally Got to Church & State: About Time, Too!!

They have cassoulet?

I haven't been to C&S in a few years - probably not since Walter Manzke left, now that I think about it. After he left, I'd read that it had gone downhill a notch or two, and haven't returned since. Your review makes me think we should give it another try. I absolutely LOVED the place when Mankze was at the helm.

EDIT: Upon reflection, I think they had cassoulet last time I was there. Is it on their regular [winter] menu, or was it a special that night?

Organic greek yogurt options, plain, whole or 2%

I wasn't talking about the "European" yogurt at TJ's. I was in fact referring to a product sold as "Greek" yogurt. It is available in whole milk (something like 300 calories per serving) and nonfat (something like 30 calories). I believe it is also available in a lowfat version but I wouldn't stake my life on it. But it is definitely called "Greek," and it is definitely available full-fat. It is in my refrigerator at home.

They carry them at HOWS market on San Gabriel Blvd. & Huntington Dr.

I think I've seen both the Kosher Dills and the Half-Sours.

Bistecca alla Fiorentina?

Roughly translated, it means "steak in the Florentine style." So it's not just "steak at an Italian restaurant." In fact, it refers to a specific cut of meat, cooked in a particular way, just as "pan roasted chicken breast" would not appear on a menu to sell a fried wing, but rather the specific part advertised, cooked in the designated method.

A "Dumb Starbucks" (that's the complete name) on Hillhurst ?

Not exactly. At one point, Weird Al had obtained the consent of all artists he parodied except one: Coolio, who's "Gangster's Paradise" hilariously became "Amish Paradise."

Obviously, there was no lawsuit. Coolio expressed his displeasure at the time. Has anyone heard of him since?

Eatery Chain ‘Hot Dog On A Stick’ Files For Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

Well, when I was in a mall during the holidays, I happened to notice that a beef hotdog - might have been Hebrew National, might have been a Vienna natural casing, I can no longer remember - was now an option instead of a turkey dog.
