What was I thinking? I'm at Sofra now, payless international is right next door.

I know that place. It's most South Asian halal right? Actually I recall that Mustapha who is not the butcher at Payless International used to have a small couscous place in the spot that Sofra occupies now.

What/how much to order at Park's?

We usually order 2 meat dishes for 2 people and an order of mushrooms for the grill. I prefer their unmarinated meats, as their marinades can be inconsistent or too sweet. I have never been impressed with their other dishes off the menu,

Do you mean Mustapha's merguez? He's at Payless International market now. I like his merguez too. But they don't sell merguez sandwiches.

Anyway, Cafe Livre sells the sandwiches and the sausages. Went there yesterday and it is the best merguez I've had in a long time. They get the fat ratio just right too.

Any casual, cheap Parisian-style couscous places in LA area?

Cafe Livre is open for dinner everyday now except Sundays. You should call the restaurant and ask for the chef. He's very personable. He was out greeting all the customers when I went today. Looks like a lot of regulars because they were hugging hello and good bye.

Pro knife sharpeners in Santa Monica?

Gary's knife sharpening is a regular at the Culver City Farmers Market.

I came to Cafe Livre today for the merguez sandwich and found out that they also serve couscous and tagines. (Thanks Chowhounders!) Indeed, it's like in France but better. The merguez was moist, skinny, reddish in color with the perfect blend of spices. The tagine is served with lots of delicious sauce to spoon over fluffy grains of semolina couscous. The green harissa is a nice spin on the traditional red harissa.

Thanks. Googled for photos and found out that Zadi makes merguez sausages and sandwiches too.

Merguez sausages or sandwiches on the Westside?

Hi: I'm looking for authentic merguez sausages and sandwiches on the Westside. By authentic, I mean skinny, reddish colored, with complex spices, and made from lamb.

I've tried Whole Foods and Lindy and Grundy and I don't find them up to par.

terra malibu = disappointing

Not sure why you responded to my post. Because I didn't write anything about Don Antonio's, I've never even eaten there. And I didn't castigate Terra.

I'm pretty sure Golden Farms market on San Fernando Road in Glendale has it.

terra malibu = disappointing

My visit to Terra was just okay overall. Some dishes were mediocre, a couple of things were very good. It's okay if you want something in Malibu. Otherwise not worth the drive. And they definitely could not compete with those prices for "eh" food in another part of the city.

By culinary school I mean professional culinary schools like Le Cordon Bleu and The Culinary Institute of America. It's the kind of presentation taught in the international section. They do a very trendy presentation of Mexican dishes and they do it well.

I had a terrific time in Chicago. It's the friendliest big city I have ever been too and I've traveled a lot. I ended up skipping breakfast and lunch most days. For dinner, I ate at Mercadito (very good culinary school style Mexican food), Chicago Chophouse (no plans to go back, long story) and Gino's East (glad I tried it, not really my kind of food, but still had fun).

I would love to go back to Chicago soon to try more restaurants.

I'll be at McCormick Place working the housewares show. I need to eat breakfast around 9:30 before doing cooking demos during the show. Any recs for places within walking distance for a quick but tasty breakfast?

Does anyone know of restaurants that deliver for lunch to trade show exhibitors?

Finally, I'm staying at the Hotel Sax in downtown. Is the immediate area safe and pedestrian friendly for a woman in the evening? I'm not sure if I want to hang out with my trade show co-workers after work. I'd rather just explore on my own or maybe hook up with people who work for other companies.
