That explains a lot! Next time I will bring my lap top and order a cappuccino, the one thing that I had that was really excellent, even though it took 30 minutes for them to make one little cappuccino in a relatively empty restaurant.

Seriously though, as a coffee house it works, add some spirits to the coffee, and it would really work ;)

Best Fusion Restaurants in and around Pasadena

After looking at the Equator Cafes beautiful website I was prepared for great fusion dishes with a serene environment surrounded by Buddhas and the chic edginess their website promised. What I found when I arrived at Equator was a tattered, dingy version of the pics from the website with the ambiance of a grunge club. The food was hit and miss with most of it being a tragic 'miss', and almost all the food seems to be pre made frozen stuff that can be found at Costco. The menu is confusing and overly ambitious, dishes did not match menu descriptions, and servers seemed equally confused on what was in each dish. Service was good, but the kitchen seemed to have trouble getting the dishes out in any kind of reasonable time and I was one of only three tables. I did take a peek at the kitchen, very tiny, messy, but not near the disaster that the ladies room was in.

Is there good fusion cuisine in Pasadena?

Favorite Restaurants West of Downtown

Mozza is a must, especially the pizza, Bouchon is awesome and considering how impossible it is to get reservations at the French Laundry, Bouchon may be as close as some of us will ever get to Thomas Keller's culinary style. For over the top decadence, set aside 3 hours and do the tasting menu at Providence, absolutely stunning presentation. Water Grill DTLA for seafood, Sasabune is one of the best sushi places in Los Angeles….hidden gem DTLA would be Colori, great Italian food, and for a spectacular sandwich DTLA, Mendocino farms is a must

Downtown LA- What's not to be missed?!!

It is a fabulous Ralphs, and it's not called 'fresh fare' for nothing...
they also have an incredible cheese selection and La Brea breads baked in house, including the oh so yummy multigrain

Salty Kitchen Sink Granola

Home made granola tops most any commercial granola out there, and it is sooo easy to make!
I never add oil to my granolas (have a batch in the oven now) I have had great success with a little ground flax seed and a little dry milk, it helps to encourage 'clusters'. Date syrup is a very yummy sweetener to experiment with....I also recommend sea salt over table salt

LOL! no, but I will add that 'love' can keep you from an otherwise great restaurant, I've not gone back to Patina because it reminds me too much of the path I didn't take.

I've never been to Loves BBQ, but I'm hoping you can provide a review,...? What type of BBQ is it?

I've only been to Patina once, but I was so distracted by my companion, I only remember the incredible cheese cart. When you're in love everything is wonderful and delicious.
I did'nt see any mention of food trucks either ....

Don't miss Water Grill, and it's only a 5 minute walk from the Westin. Head SW on Fig to 5th... after dinner take a little tour through the historic Biltmore and if you're a bookworm, Caravan books is also next door . The Westin is also in walking distance of LA Live with the always exciting Katsuya, head SW on Fig to Olympic about 15 min or grab a cab for $5. For lunch Mendocino farms is fab, Roy's at 8th and Fig is consistently great seafood....except for Mendocino farms, these are all seafood places. Farmers Markets with various street food are Thursdays 9-2ish at 7th and Figueroa and Fridays 11-2ish at the Bank of America plaza 333 S Hope St ......Mortons at 7th and Fig has awesome oysters and I think they have steak as well..lol

glad you posted the map link, as you can see from the pic, Tony's is a charming little shack of a place, not fancy, but the best NY style pizza in Ventura....and the owners are always ultra gracious and entertaining.....i

Great Pizza in Ventura

Tony's is family owned and operated, and a longstanding Ventura landmark. I am not a huge pizza fan myself, but any pizza loving friend I have taken there has raved about it, including a couple of Ray's NY devotees,........spend the day working up a healthy appetite at the beach, and when the sun begins to set, the air turns chilly and the fog begins to roll in, head over to Tony's. Save room for McConnell's ice cream on E. Main, head east on Thompson 2 or 3 miles, Thompson turns into E. Main, McConnell's is on the left just past Lang St. I am a huge fan of McConnell's Turkish Coffee ice cream

Is there any place that sells Breadfruit (Ulu) in Los Angeles?

I was at A Grocery Warehouse on Sunset in Echo Park just last week, and they had Breadfruit as well as their usual, broad selection of very fresh, exotic fruits and veggies....
BTW: what are you making with it?

Good packaged broth for Asian cooking?

Swanson's has the closest to homemade taste, and is very popular with Asian restaurants. It's very often the only canned chicken broth you will find in an Asian market, and for good reason. It has no pronounced flavor other than chicken, the herbs and spices you add are what will determine its flavor....garlic, fresh ginger root, chili paste, cilantro and the like will give it an Asian flavor.

Macaron Cupcakes in LA?

That sounds like something from the very delicious, La Provence Patisserie & Cafe in BH and Brentwood http://www.laprovencecafe.com....if not,
check with the smaller cupcake bakers, and they may create a custom order for you.
DTLA Nickel Diner http://nickeldiner.com pastry chef Sharlena Fong makes incredible cupcakes and takes special orders. Fab macarons from DTLA Bottega Louie or ultra delish macarons from Paulette's in BH .... attran99 great suggestion, assemble yourself using your favorite macaron and fave cupcake

Fresh squeezed OJ in West LA by the quart?

Ojai's Friends Ranch citrus available at the Sunday Hollywood, and Wed Santa Monica farmers markets, exceptional citrus and fab OJ.....or p/u their Valencia juice oranges and squeeze them yourself. Fresh squeezed isn't that time consuming, and you can get creative and blend Valencia orange, Ojai Pixie tangerine with a splash of grapefruit, or tangelo, spicy blood orange and/or pomegranate for deeper color.

Family owned Vicente Foods is also an excellent option, and for more than just fresh squeezed OJ...but I do wish they would develop their website!

Review: Bottega Louie

Bottega Louie is much more subdued during the day, the dining area during the day on weekends is pretty mellow. I have not tried their brunch, but I have had several weekend breakfasts, all very relaxed, good to great food, always great coffee, and the dining area during the day consistently has great service in....one of Bottega Louie's big claims to fame at breakfast is their bacon.... Pastries and breads are always very good

reasonably priced sushi to impress the out-of-towners

the context of ref to Del's being "tacky" or any disrespect to Smart and Final, and that entire little strip of Santa Monica Blvd possibly being an unapealing view for someone 'snobby about L.A.'....
Del's Saloon, one of the best dive bars in L.A but now closed-may it rest in peace, was referred to as tacky because the out of town guest was described as "..she is very snobby about LA..", making echigo's location likely unappealing for the guest, and the nature of a great dive bar is to be at least a little tacky.......I am in DTLA, I live and work around some of the greatest "tacky" spots in So Cal. We also have plenty of dive bars (little Joy, the historic Hank's..etc ), and some pretty fab sushi-Katsuya, Hama and Sushi Gen, but for someone described as "snobby about L.A.", the westside seemed to be safer and more fitting of the inquiry.

re: Bar Hayama, my most delicious experiences at Hayama have been at the sushi bar, low on ambiance but very entertaining sushi chefs...
