Ottawa vs Toronto

Byward market is a fun place for visit. But if you dine at any restaurants inside Byward marekt, be prepared to pay more! Since you are from Toronto, don't bother visiting any Chinese restaurants since you won't find the same quality as those in Toronto.

Best Chinese Ottawa

My friend told us that they went to Golden Palance to have business lunch (picked by their customer). She told us she had to pretend to love the food in front of her customer. She would never go to place like this for the so-called Chinese food. Try Chu Sing, Yangtze, Rideau (Kanata), GingSing.

The only good thing about Golden Palance is their service.

Best Chinese Ottawa

Brother Wu? You must be joking. We were talking about Chinese restaurants at our dinner and we ALL said that "You won't see us there for the next 10 years." This place is dirty and food was awful.

Lichee View was good when they opened and they went downhill. They were on the top 10 restaurants that failed to comply with the Health Canada's health standard (it was covered by Ottawa Citizen few years ago). I just stopped going to restaurants that do not care about health of customers.

New Hong Sing is just okay. I would prefer to go to Rideau in Kanata.

Looking for unique places to eat in Ottawa

For Thai food, I recommend Nokham Thai. This is the place recommended by the Thai Embassy staff. My friends from Thailand also recommends this place.

Cabotto's is okay. Most of the retired seniors living in Stittsville go there to have dinner very often. On Fridays and Saturdays, their parking lot is full. So, I am afraid that you have problem getting your reservation there.

Any good bakeries in Ottawa?

Yes. Boko at Elgin is very good.

Best Chinese Ottawa

Few years ago when a manager told my colleague that So Good was her favourite Chinese resstaurant, my colleague just teased her that she didn't know what Chinese food is about. I guess So Good has more vegetarian dishes than many other Chinese restaurants and that is why it becomes a hot place for vegetarians.

My colleague even told me that if So Good operates in Toronto, they won't survive for the food offered. If you look inside the restaurant, no Asian customers go to this place to eat.

Well, here are the list based on my colleague's recommendation:
Mandarin Ogilvie, Imperial Palace Szechuan & Cantonese restaurant (expensive), New Dragon Tavern, Chu Shing, Fortune Express, Yangtze and GingSing.

Ottawa

I won't recommend Vietnamese Kitchen. Don't waste your money there. Try New Mee Fung (at 350 BOOTH ST near Booth ST and Poplar ST) instead. We went with three families. Adults one table and teenagers one table. The teenagers didn't want to eat the food at all. What they said was "worst food they ever had" and we all agreed.

Looking for some Ottawa suggestions

The list is quite right. I agree!

Looking for some Ottawa suggestions

I agree with the comment about So Good. The food there was terrible and I now understand why I don't see any Asian there. At one point, one of the managers told me to go to try So Good. She told me "It is so good!" I came back to tell her it was so bad and will never go there to eat.

Ottawa restaurants near Elgin & Somerset

Perl,

How was your dining experience at other Ottawa restaurants? Would like to hear your experience.

New to Ottawa, looking for low- to mid-range and Chowish

Well, for

For Chinese food, I recommend the two Chinese restaurants in Kanata, namely Rideau Chinese Restaurants and Fortune Express. Dragon Tavern in the east end is also a good one to try. Very reasonable price. Chu Sing in Chinatown is good, but service is lousy.

For Vietnamese food, members at OttawaFoodies.com vote Pho Bo Ga 2 (843 Somerset) and Pho Bo Ga La (784 Somerset).

For Thai food, Sweet Basil and Green Pepper are the place.

For Japanese food, try Genji, Sushi Kanata and Ichibei.

Ottawa restaurants near Elgin & Somerset

There are few good restaurants that are close to Lord Elgin:

1. Genji Japanese Restaurant - on Lisgar (between Metcalfe & Elgin) - recommend that you try the set dinner with Sapporo beer. Price is very reasonable.
2. Second Cup for coffee - corner of Elgin and Lisgar
3. Johnny Farina Italian restaurant - on Elgin

All within walking distance!

How was your meal? Where did you go? Would love to hear your comments.

Ontario!

How about a separate board for Ottawa and Gatineau area? Have you notice that the members used to submit review to Ottawa restaurants have disappeared and gone to other review site now? I think Ottawa/Gatineau deserves a separate board and not to bury in the Toronto board.

My 2 cents for your consideration before other members got used to other website. Seriously. You can just compare the # of entries in the old board and now and you should be able to see the difference.

Family Dinner suggestions wanted -- Chinese

I recommend "Royal Teahouse" for family dinner. It is located on Woodbine and Applecreek, east side of Woodbine, north of Highway 7. It's in a strip mall next to Wendy's/Tim Hortons.

Royal Teahouse specialty is dim-sum and now they extend the business to include traditional Chinese dinner. I tried both of the dim-sum and dinner. Above average. Some of the specialty are pretty excellent.

Their price is a bit higher compared to others. But I don't mind the extra for the comfortable seating, clean washroom and clean plates.

Ottawa - kid-friendly brunch

I would suggest Perkins Family Restaurant at St. Laurent. I took my friends from Toronto there for a Sunday brunch. My friends love the place, esp. the atmosphere. The place is always packed.

Try it out and see if I am right.
